JnsnDNA The results of the DNA study are in! At my request, Suzanne Johnston provided the following explanation of the lab findings. Linda The results are in on the first phase of our DNA Study. Three subjects were tested. DNA Y Chromosome results showed a match between the two participants who traced back to Michael. There was no match between the Michael subjects and the subject representing John Johnson. What does this mean? 1. There is no close paternal connection between Michael Johnson and John Johnson. That is to say that they were not brothers, or paternal cousins. If Michael can be proved to be a son of Edward Johnson, it would say that there is also no close paternal connection between Edward Johnson and John Johnson. In other words, they are not from the same family. 2. This would mean that Edward was not a cousin to John as was stated by Dr. Lorand Johnson, as some have believed. As you may recall, there was a letter from, Mary Keith as she left London for Virginia, saying that they were being accompanied by her cousin Edward Johnson. That letter has not been located. If Michael Johnson is indeed a son of Edward as many believe, this study would indicate that the Edward referred to in the letter (if there was such a letter) does not refer to this Edward, because there is not a relationship between Edward (through Michael) and John Johnson. 3. We will do further DNA testing on another descendant of John Johnson from a different branch of the family to determine the DNA of John Johnson. If it matches as the two participants from Michael did, then we will have established the Y Chromosome DNA for John Johnson too. This is very exciting, because whether or not it met our expectations, it will help us to determine our research direction. I have many ideas swirling through my head already. Some will be disappointed, and some will be elated because it will vindicate their research direction. But whatever our point of view, it should help us to find the truth regarding these early Virginia families, which is what we are all striving for. Suzanne
