William Johnson was the only Johnson grandson mentioned in the 1743 will of Nicholas Meriwether, father of Ann Meriwether Johnson Cosby. A brief outline of this very long and complicated will was printed in Henley’s Abstracts of Wills from Goochland County, Virginia, 1727-1777:

Nicholas Meriwether of Hanover County in the Colony of Virginia. Dec. 12, 1743, Nov. 20, 1744. DB#4, 437-43. Wife, Elizabeth Meriwether. Dau., Ann Johnson. Sons Nicholas (Decd.), Thomas, William and David. Grand-daughters, Mildred, Jane, Mary and Sarah Meriwether; Mary Mildred, Jane and Isabeller Lewis; and Judeth Littlepage. Gransons, William, Thomas, Richard, John, James, Francis, and Nicholas Meriwether; Nicholas and Robert Lewis; and William Johnson. Great grandson, Nicholas Meriwether. Son-in-law, Robert Lewis, Catharine Holladay, daughter of Capt. William Holladay, at this time living with Mrs. Bickley in King William County. Other names Mentioned: Capt. Christopher Clarke, Edward Hix, Thomas Graves, Robert Dalton and Roundabout. Ex: Wife, Elizabeth Meriwether and son-in-law, Robert Lewis. Wit: Peter Jefferson, Samuel Dalton, George Taylor, Charles Lynch. (Henley, 23)

William was born in 1722 according to the 1782 Personal Property Tax List of Richmond, Va. making him 21 years old at the time the will was written. By 1752, he was residing in Fredericksville Parish in the western portion of Louisa County:

23-Jun-1752 , John Cosby and Anne Cosby, his wife, of Fredericksville Parish and Nicholas Johnson of St. Martins Parish Louisa County to William Johnson of Fredericksville Parish for natural love and affection to sd. William Johnson also for L20, 500 acres in Fredericksville parish whereon said William Johnson now lives at the River on Love Statham's, Capt. Venables, John Michie, James Watson, Capt. Thomas Johnson. Sig. John Cosby, Ann Cosby, Nichs. Johnson. (VAGenWeb, Louisa Co Lo.DB: A, p. 466)

In 1753, William Johnson, Gent. was a Vestryman in Fredericksville parish. He appeared as a church warden in the Vestry Book and also in the processioning lists for this parish consistently until about 1766. (Davis, Rosalie Edith, Fredericksville Parish Vestry Book 1742-1787 Vol. 1)

By 1757, he was addressed as Capt. Johnson and was purchasing more land:

26-Jan-1757 Robert Estes and Mary his wife, of Fredericksville Parish Louisa Co. to Capt. William Johnson of same for L100 currt. money for 200 acres on east side of Goldmine Creek in Fredericksville parish, the remaining part of 500 acres I purchased of Maj. William Morris adj. Henry Mills line, James Roaches, William Morris, Robert Estes, Jr., and John Poindexter and Gold Mine Creek. Sig. Robert Estes, Mary Estes. Wit. Thomas Johnson, Charles Daniel, John Jones, Robert Estes, Jr. (VAGenWeb, Louisa Co, Lo.DB-B, 142)

His neighbors on this land were his brother Thomas and members of the Estes family one of whom was later connected to Major Thomas Johnson.

By 1757, William was married as this deed shows:

Date: 27-Jan-1757. William Johnson and Martha his wife of Fredericksville Parish Louisa Co. to Thomas Johnson of Drisdale parish Caroline Co. L300 for 500 acres on north side of the Southanna River in Fredericksville Parish and place whereon said William Johnson now lives, adj at the river on Love Statham's line to Capt. Abraham Venables, John Michies, James Watson and Thomas Johnson. Sig. William Johnson, Martha Johnson. wit. George Estes, Love Statham, Stephen Hunter. (VAGenWeb, Louisa Co.,Lo.D-B, Page: 127)

The marriage itself most likely occurred well before 1750. William’s oldest son, Philip, was probably born about that time.

It is said that he had married Martha Jones, daughter of Lane Jones, but the actual marriage record has not been found. Obviously his wife was a Martha. Another 1757 deed from William’s mother to his brother Thomas provides some hints that William Johnson was associated with Orlando Jones and quite probably married a Martha Jones, sister of Orlando Jones.

26-Apr-1757 Ann Cosby (lately Ann Johnson) of Louisa Co. to Thomas Johnson of Caroline Co. £ sterling and £100 money of Va. for 2 tracts of land, 1 tract of 400 acres and the other of 311 acres. 400 acre tract begins at Col. Nicholas Meriwether, adj. Southanna, the other tract of 311 acres adj. Nicholas Meriwether's now Thomas Johnsons, the river, Roundabout neck Ridge. Sig. Ann Cosby. Wit. Wm. Johnson, Wm. Cruther, Robert Estes, Orlander Jones (VAGenWeb, Louisa Co., DB-B,161)

A family history of Gideon Macon has stated that:

Lane Jones, son of Orlando and Martha (Macon) Jones, b. 15 June 1707, d. ca. 1750, m. 1727 Anne Barber. They were the parents of: (1) Martha Jones, b. 1728, m. William Johnson of Louisa Co., VA. (2) Ann Jones, b. 1729, m. John Hudson of Albemarle Co., VA., (3) Lane Jones, Jr. b. 1733, d. 1734.(4) Orlando Jones, b. 1735,(5) Rowland Jones, b. 19 April 1738, (6) Frances Barber Jones, b. 1740,(7) William Jones, b. 1746, lived in Hanover Co., VA. (Macon & Wood, Alethea, Gideon Macon of Virginia and Some of His Descendants)

The name of one of William’s granddaughters does seem to support this statement. She was called Martha Jones Wiley in the will of Ann Cosby. Laine Jones Bible apparently contained the following:

Memo taken of the ages (Births) of Mr. Laine Jones’ children: Martha Jones- 5/20/1728, Anne Jones- 9/24/1729, Laine Jones- 9/15/1733, Orlando Jones- 4/19/1738, Frances Jones- 1/26/1740, & William Jones 11/7/1746. Lane, son of Orlando Jones and Martha, his wife, b. 6/15/1707, Francis, son of Orlando Jones and Martha, b. 8/6/1710, Martha, wife of Orlando Jones, Gent., d. 5/4/1716 (Linda Sparks Starr, email of 8/10/2008)

The Reverend Rowland Jones was the father of Orlando, Sr. and also of Anna Maria. Anna Maria married several times and one marriage was to William Timson who died in 1719. Her last marriage was to a Thornton. Anna Maria’s will was probated in November 1760 in York County (Wright, Edward F., York County, Virginia Wills, Inventories and Accounts, 1760-1783. 2005, p.3). She did not mention Martha Jones Johnson by name, but subsequent court documents indicate that Martha Johnson was one of her heirs. Some time in 1760, William and Martha were participants in a suit in York County:

A suit in ejectment in York Co. Records: Martha Johnson, Anne Hudson, Lane Jones Jr., Orlando Jones, Rolling Jones, Frances Barber Jones and William Jones were Children of Lane Jones, cousin of John Timson deceased—that Lane Jones, Jr. was dead, that that Ann Barber Jones was his daughter and heir. The plaintiffs were William Johnson and Martha his wife, John Hudson and Anne, his wife; Roger Gregory, guardian of Orlando Jones, infant, William Johnson guardian of Rolling (Rowland) Jones and Frances Barber Jones, Infants, William Clopton guardian of William Jones, infant vs. William Graves and John Ferguson, exors of Anna Maria Thornton deceased. From this it might appear that William Clopton’s wife Elizabeth Ford, was widow of Lane Jones, Jr. as he had a daughter Anne Lane Clopton, who married Elisha Meredith. It is possible also that Roger Gregory married the widow of Lanes Jones, Sen. As Orlando and Rowland Jones were over 21 in 1761, the suit must have commenced several years before 1761. (Tyler’s Quarterly Vol. II "Genealogies of Virginia Families")

Nicholas Johnson, brother of William Johnson, married into the Hudson family lending credence to the belief that this William Johnson was his brother.

The following deed, also described in the same Tyler’s Quarterly article, shows William and Martha participating in a land transaction in a nearby county:

In 1763 William Johnson and Martha his wife, John Hudson and Anne his wife of Albemarle County, John Jones and Frances Barber Jones, his wife of Louisa County, Orlando Jones, of Albemarle, and Rowland Jones, of Hanover County, deeded to Joseph Lewis of Henrico their "five parts" in certain lands in Cumberland county, two parts being reserved to William Jones and Anne Barber Jones infants, the latter being daughter and heir of Lane Jones, jr. deceased. (email of Rhoda Fone, Cumberland Co. Deeds)

The tithables list for Fredericksville Parish does not include a William Johnson at all. He is not easily identifiable in the records of Louisa and probably moved from Fredericks-ville Parish further east at some point. However, there were several William Johnsons in the lists for Trinity and St. Martin’s Parishes. Distinguishing one from another is difficult, but with the help of personal characteristics and family connections, it is possible.

The tithables lists of Louisa County begin in 1767. Several William Johnsons appear there, but one in particular is no doubt the son of Thomas and Ann Meriwether Johnson.

The following highlights this particular William Johnson with the number of tithables indicated first, followed by the number of acres owned:

  1. List of Samuel Ragland. Colo. William Johnson- 8-175
  2. List of Samuel Ragland. William Johnson – 13- 200-1
  3. " " " William Johnson – 14- 776
  4. " " " William Johnson – 13 – 445
  5. " " " William Johnson, Jr. – 5

1774. " " " Col. William Johnson ?

1776 " " " William Johnson – 4

Numbers of tithables are consistently listed, but the same cannot be said for the acreage owned in the Parish. The lists imply, but do not prove that William Johnson had a son William. (Davis, Roaslie Edith, Louisa County, Virginia Tithables and Census 1743-1785, )

William and Martha Jones Johnson were the parents of Philip (b. ca. 1750), Jane (b. 1755), Martha (b. 1759), Frances (b. 1762) and Sam (b. 1767) Martha Jones Johnson died probably in 1767 quite possibly of difficulties in childbirth. Her husband remarried:

Nov. 7, 1768William Johnson married Anne Clayton.  Sur. William Garrett, Jr.   (Williams, Marriages of Louisa Co.,Virginia 1766-1815, p. 59)

Ann was the widow of a John Clayton who wrote his will in Culpeper County on July 4, 1767:

Will of John Clayton. 4 children: Samuel, George, Philip, Caity. Wife not named called last wife. Exors: brother Philip Clayton & Samuel Clayton, Jr. & Wm. Garret, Sr. signed: John Clayton. Wit: Edward Johns, Sr, William Garrett, jr., Thomas Lane, Jr. Rec. 9, Nov. 1767 (Chappelear, Nancy & Hatch, Kate Binford . Abst… Lo. Co, Virginia Will Books 1743-1801, p. 17)

The will was filed in Louisa probably because Clayton owned property there. Although John’s wife was not named, the 1782 Personal Property Tax List for the City of Richmond included a 15 year old Catherine Clayton in the household of Will and Ann Johnson. William Johnson was one of the men who compiled the inventory of John’s estate.

In 1771, two deeds were recorded in Louisa that revealed the identity of John Clayton’s widow, Ann:

April 8, 1771 Wm Garrett, Senr. of Trinity Parish, Louisa Co. for the Love and Affection I bare to my GrandDaughter Caty Clayton do lend her the use of my Negro Girl named Lucy till she arrives at the Age of 18 or Marries, I then Give my sd. Grand Daughter afsd. Slave & her Increase. /s/ William Garrett. 8 April 1771 ack by Wm Garrett (Davis, Louisa County, Vir…..:1759-1774, p. 121

William had married a daughter of William Garrett, Senior. William himself then signed a deed of gift to Caty Clayton, his new wife’s four years old daughter:

April 8, 1771. Wm Johnson of Louisa Co. St. Martains par. For Love and Affection I do bare to my Daughter in Law Caty Clayton do lent her a Negro Girl named Judyth until sd Caty arrives to the age of 18 or Marries in which Case I give sd Slave with all her Increase. In case sd Caty should die before she arrives to the Age of 18 or marries, then the sd. Slave shall Return to my Estate /s/ Wm Johnson 8 April 1772 ack. By William Johnson. (Davis, Louisa County, Vir…..:1759-1774, p. 122)

Another 1771 deed in York County seems to represent the actions of this William in pursuit of legacy from his deceased wife Martha:

Aug. 2, 1771. William Johnson & Philip Johnson his son and Margaret Johnson wife of the sd. Philip of Louisa Co. (Va.) for 160 pounds sold to Samuel Timson of York Co. all that 90 a. tr of land in Bruton Parish bounded by the lands of William Drummond called Porto Bello, the land of Frederick Bryan decd, the land of Anne Timson, John Ferguson & the land of Anne Barber Jones, being the land allotted the sd. William Johnson by decree of York Co. Court…… Wit: John Tazewell, Edmd Dickinson, William Jackson, James Crandel

To William Garrett & Nathaniel Garland gent greeting, whereas William Johnson & Anne his wife & Philip Johnson & Margaret his wife by their indenture of sale have sold unto Samuel Timson …. (order for relinquishing of dower rights- FGF) Rec. Oct. 21, 1771 & Nov. 18, 1771 (Brewer, Mary Marshall, York County, Virginia Land Records, 1763-1777 Lewes Del. Colonial Roots, 2007, p. 87 York DB #8, FHL #34422, p. 170;)

Note that William Johnson’s wife is called Anne. The suit filed in York County seems to have been about Martha’s right to an inheritance from her Timson relatives. She died before 1768, but her children would have had an interest in the legacy from her aunt Anna Maria Thornton. Her son Philip was a recipient of the land. William and Martha’s daughters may have received their compensation in cash. The other heirs of Thornton received portions of an 800 acres tract of land in York and sold at least part of it.

By the middle of 1780, Ann Garrett Clayton Johnson’s father died:

Will of Wm. Garrett, Parish of Trinity. To my wife Elizabeth Garrett land and plantation whereon I now live. A certain tract sold to Benj. Lewis on Contrary. To my son Wm Garrett all land south side of Franks Run adj. Watkins & Steward. To my son Henry Garrett all land in Spotsylvania Co., also tract of land lent my wife. All my children: Wm Garrett, Henry Garrett, Ann Johnson, Elizabeth Terrell & Susanna Johnson. Exors: sons Wm & Henry Garrett. Dated 3 Feb. 1779. Wit: Nathaniel Garland, John (X) Lane. Rec: May 9 1780 ( Chappelear…, Abst...Lo. Co. Wills, p. 57)

Ann’s sister Susannah had married another of the descendants of Col. Richard Johnson. On March 2, 1770 in Louisa, she married Richard Johnson son of Major Thomas Johnson and Elizabeth Ashton Johnson.

In 1780 Ann Cosby, mother of William, appointed him to be one of the executors of her will. Her complete will is reproduced here:

William does not appear in the records of Louisa County after 1785. However, a William Johnson was an Inn "holder" in the City of Richmond according to the 1782 Tax List. Will Johnson (age 60) was listed as head of household with his wife Ann (age 46) and Frances (age 20), Martha (age 23), Sam (age 15), Meriwether (age 13), John (age 10), Susanna (age8), Mary (age5), Catherine Clayton (age 15), Jona Gordon (age 17)- Barkeep. This entry also says that Will Johnson had been living in Richmond for three months. (VaGenWeb, Henrico County 1782 Tax List)

A chancery court case in Louisa County probably initiated before 1788 further confirms the Clayton-Johnson relationships:

That whereas one John Clayton, late of the County of Culpeper, in his lifetime and at the time of his death was possessed of many slaves, stocks and outstanding debts and other personal estate of more than value sufficient to satisfy and pay all his just debts and being so possessed made his last will and testament in writing bearing date [blank] in the year one thousand seven hundred and [blank] and thereby appointed William Garrett and Samuel Clayton, Gent. his executors and soon after died possessed as aforesaid leaving Ann, his widow, one of the defendants to this bill who that since intermarried with William Johnson, Gent. another defendant to this bill. (Abercrombie,…Louisa County Virginia Judgments 1770-1790)

The LVA lists this suit as Index Number 1788-03. The complete contents of this file have not been examined. A factor in the dispute was a slave named Daniel. He appeared in the 1767 tithables list in Ann Clayton’s household:

Clayton, Anns List: Daniel, Jack, Hanner, Crees, William Garrett 5-410 (Davis, Roaslie Edith, Louisa County, Virginia Tithables and Census 1743-1785)

The William Garrett listed may be Ann’s father but he was more likely Ann’s brother, William.

William and Ann Garrett Clayton Johnson were the parents of Meriwether (b. 1769), John (b. 1772), Susanna (b. 1774) and Mary (b. 1777). There may have been other children whose identity has not been established. The date of William Johnson’s death is not known, but in 1808, a newspaper in Richmond advertised thus:

Virginia—At a superior court of Chancery holden at the Capitol, in the city of Richmond, the 22nd. Day of June, 1808.

John Barrett and James Miller, Plaintiffs--- A against James Jones, executor of John Jones, Ann Johnson, widow of William Johnson, John Wiley and Jane his wife, Nicholas Johnson, Meriwether Johnson, John Johnson, Mary Johnson, Richard Hundley, Nelson Foster, John Forster, John Hunter Michael Perkins and ____________ infant children of Francis Graves, deceased, but John McKim, specially assigned their guardian, John Poindexter, Henry Chiles and Henry Garnett, Cornelius Harris, William Pattman and Zachariah Foster, Defendants. (Dowd, Lea. Email of March 2007).

This chancery case has not survived so the contents are unknown.

William was obviously the father of many children and was married twice. The specific location as well as the date of his demise is not known at this time. Nor have his will or estate papers been located.

Children of William Johnson and Martha Jones Johnson

I. Philip (William3, Thomas 2, Richard 1)

Obviously Philip married a Margaret, surname unknown, before 1771 so was born sometime before 1750. A Philip Johnson appeared in the Personal Property Tax lists for Louisa County in 1798 and 1799 (Lo.Co.Pers Prop, Va. LDS Reel.# 511947) He may be William’s son, but that is not proven.

II. Jane (William3, Thomas 2, Richard 1)

This daughter was probably born about 1755. A Jane Johnson, daughter of William Johnson according to the marriage record, wed John Wily on February 28, 1775 in Louisa County. She was most likely the mother of the two great grand-daughters mentioned in Ann Cosby’s will. A Louisa County deed further supports this:

15 Sept. 1786. I John Willey of St. Martins Par., Louisa Co. for Love to my two Daughters Ann Meriwether & Mara Jones & in complying wit the Last Will & Testament of Mrs. Ann Cosby do disclaim all right & title I now have to Sundry Mulattoe slaves mentioned in a deed of Gift date 19 March 1781 & do hereby declare the deed was made & executed without my knowledge and the two pounds therein exprest to be received was never paid by me or any person for me. . /s/ John Wiley. Wit: Thomas Johnson, George Johnson. 9 Oct. 1786 proved by oaths of Thomas Johnson & Geo. Johnson (VAGenWeb, Louisa Co.,Lo DB-F, 154-155)

According to the Rev. Douglas, John Wiley and his wife Jane had two more children.

After this, they have not been traced.

III. Martha 1759- )

This daughter married the merchant Francis Graves in 1783 in Henrico County. (Lindsay, Marriages of Hen. Co., Va. 1680-1808, p. 38) According to the Graves Family Association, they were the parents of Elizabeth, Francis and Samuel. Francis and Martha were deceased by 1806 and the children have not been traced. (www.gravesfa.org)

IV. Frances (1762- )

Frances married Samuel Allinson on 23 March 1793 in Henrico County.(Lindsay, Marriages of Hen. Co., Va. 1680-1808, p. 2)

V. Sam (1767- )

Little is known about Sam Johnson. The only hint of his fate is to be found in this Fluvanna County deed:

Sept. 27, 1813. Nicholas Johnson & Thomas Blackwell of King Wm co. sell to Benjamin Johnson land on both sides of little Raccoon Creek. Two hundred and ninety six acres. "Nicholas Johnson as the only heir of Sam Jones Johnson deceased" Wit: P. Aylett, Samuel Edwards, Reuben Dugas (Jester, C., Fluvanna Co. Deed Bk. #6, p. 188)

Note- Elizabeth Barber

This may be a daughter of William Johnson, born about 1758. She married Clevears Duke in Louisa Co. on Oct. 13, 1778. (Williams, Marriages of Louisa Co., Virginia 1766-1815, p.30)
