(1) Thomas
Sawyer was born in England about 1616. Upon
his arrival in Massachusetts in 1636, he settled in Ipswich. In 1646 he moved
west to Nashaway Plantation (now Lancaster), along with the Prescotts, Wilders
and Houghtons, and two other families, thereby becoming one of the first six
settlers in that area. Later that year (or in 1648) he married Mary
Prescott, baptized in Sowerby, Halifax Parish,
Yorkshire, England, on 24 February 1630 and died in April 1716, daughter of
John
Prescott and Mary
Platts
alias Gawkroger,
whose family is said to have founded the city of Plattsburgh, New York, both
buried in Old
Settlers Burial Field, Lancaster; John's stone says: "John
Prescott Desased. This marks the grave of the Founder of Lancaster, Who died
in 1681"; and Mary's stone says: "Mary
Prescot Daparted This Life Feb 23, 1718." Thomas died in Lancaster
on 12 September 1706 and was buried in the Old Settlers Burial Field, where
his tombstone still stands, reading: "Thomas
Sawyer Died September 12, 1706 About the 90 Year of His Age."
Thomas and Mary were the parents of:
(2) John
Sawyer, born 6 February 1661, Lancaster, Massachusetts,
died 1705, Lyme, Connecticut. John married 16 January 1686, in Lancaster, Mary
Ball, who died 27 February
1750. The couple resided at various times in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Saybrook,
Lyme, and Hebron, Connecticut. Parents of:
(3) Moses
Sawyer, born about 1690, died 7 February 1732
in Hebron, Connecticut. Moses married 14 February 1717 in Hebron, Ruth
Lewis, born 1 January 1695, daughter of Thomas
Lewis and Sarah
Bassett, born about 1662, daughter of William
Bassett and Mary
Rainsford Bassett Percival of Boston.
