(1)  Peter Lane of Hemyock, Devon, England married Elizabeth, of unknown parentage.  In the "Hemyock Overseers of the Poor Records" in the Devon Record Office is a document regarding this Lane family (ref # P044/4); an abstract says the following:  "Peter Lane, Elizabeth his wife, Mary age 7, Sarah 4, Peter 1 1/2,  removal order from Clayhidon - 1757."  Clayhidon is a parish in the Blackdown Hills of Devon, not far from Churchstanton and Hemyock.
        In 1662, legislation passed in the form of the Settlement Act allowed the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of any parish, on complaint being made to the justice of the peace, to remove persons who they considered would become a charge on the parish rate to their last place of legal settlement. The concept of legal settlement was determined by the criteria of whether one was a native of a parish, a householder there, sojourner, apprentice or servant for the space of forty days.
        With these facts in mind, and the baptism registers for Hemyock in hand, it can be deduced that Peter and Elizabeth Lane were living in Hemyock in 1752 when their daughter Sarah was born, removed to Clayhidon by 1755, and were removed back to Hemyock by order in 1757, in time to have their next child, William, baptized there in 1758; they stayed in Hemyock for at least a dozen years thereafter, where their daughter Jane was baptized in 1767, and son Thomas in 1770.

        (2) Thomas Lane, baptized 16 September 1770 at Hemyock, Devon, England, died 11 April 1861 at age 93 in the town of Hounsfield, Jefferson Co., New York, where he had been a farmer.  On 17 December 1795 in Feniton, Devon, England, Thomas married Ann "Nanny" Stamp, baptized 29 January 1775 in Buckerell, Devon, England, died 25 November 1857 in the town of Hounsfield, Jefferson Co., New York, a daughter of John Stamp and Jane "Jenny" Druller of Buckerell.  Thomas & Nanny are both buried in the Sulpher Springs Cemetery on Sulpher Springs Road, Hounsfield.
        Their children's baptismal records show that the couple moved frequently in the first few years following their marriage.  They were married in Feniton in 1795, were living in Whimple from at least 1797 to 1799, and they were in Colyton by 1805 until at least 1809.
        Naturalization records for Hounsfield, Jefferson County, New York indicate that Thomas left England from Dorset and emigrated to Quebec before moving on to Sackets Harbor on 28 May 1834.  Records of their son Thomas' naturalization state that he left England in 1832, and so may be the case for Thomas and Nanny, indicating about a two year hiatus in Canada before crossing the St. Lawrence.  Thomas Sr. declared his intent for naturalization on 17 July 1838 and was made a citizen of the United States on 8 September 1840, the same day his son-in-law, William Stoodley declared his intent for citizenship in the Town of Hounsfield.
        The Stoodleys and the Lanes settled near one another in Hounsfield and adjacent to the Washburns, Metcalfs, and Eveleighs -- all families they would become related to by marriage.  Thomas & Nanny's place of residence appears on the 1855 land ownership map of the town (at right), but not on the 1864 map, an indication that none of the children occupied the property after Thomas' death in 1861, or perhaps the land was absorbed into the Stoodley farm and the house left unoccupied.
        In the 1850 federal census of Hounsfield, Thomas and Nanny were enumerated as the heads of dwelling number 232, family 232.  Thomas reported his age as 79 and his occupation as farmer.  Nanny was 75 and reported no occupation, possibly an indication that they both worked on the farm.  They both reported their birthplaces as England.  The value of their real estate at that time was estimated at $2,000.  Living with them was their widowed daughter Jane Jeffrey, age 44, born in England, and her son, Duane, age 5, born in New York State.
        Also living in the same household and enumerated with the same family number were William Stokes, age 50, born in England, and his wife Ann Lane, age 46, born in England, the daughter of Thomas and Nanny Lane.  The ages of William and Ann's children indicate that the couple did not emigrate until after 1842, a full 8 years after Thomas and Nanny.
        Thomas wrote his will on 15 January 1856 and it was witnessed by James Marsh and William "Stodley", his son-in-law.  In the will he specifically mentioned daughters Ann and Jane and he assigned his son Charles to be sole executor of his estate.
        Nanny Stamp Lane died on 25 November 1857 and she was buried in Sulpher Springs Cemetery, Town of Hounsfield, next to her daughter, Jane Jeffrey, who predeceased her.  Thomas died on 11 April 1861 and was laid to rest beside his wife.
        On 26 May 1862, Thomas' will was proved and each of hos children were required to give their full name and place of residence, thus providing a reliable record for establishing this Lane genealogy.
        Their gravestones, in exquisite condition, stand half-way back from the road at the east end of Sulpher Springs Cemetery. The inscription on Nanny's stone reads:  "A faithful friend a mother dear;  A tender parent lieth here.  Death eased her from her pain;  She died in hopes to live again." To the right of Nanny's stone lies the grave of their daughter Jane, widow of Robert Jeffrey, who predeceased both her parents.
        Today the old Stoodley and Lane properties are taken up by the former "S. Washburn" farm, still in operation, and owned by the Eveleigh Family, on the Eveleigh Road, in Sulpher Springs.  The road is a dead end from both directions and the ruins of the homes must be accessed by foot.

3. Thomas D. Lane, born 1801 in Devon, England, died 25 August 1887, age 85 years 10 months, and his wife Charlotte Williams, whom he married in 1825, died in 6 March 1876, age 72 years, 4 months, 5 days.  He was not mentioned in his father's will. Thomas and Charlotte emigrated in 1832 from England, and he was naturalized 3 September 1844 at age 44.  Thomas and Charlotte had a daughter, Sarah, who lived in Montague, Lewis Co., New York, while Thomas and Nanny had a son, James who also resided there.  In addition, Thomas and Charlotte's descendants bear the names Charles, Ann, Sarah, Thomas, Amos, Henry and Peter, all names found among the other descendants of Thomas Lane and Nanny Stamp.  Thomas Lane and Charlotte Williams were farmers.  They are both buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Town of Henderson, Jefferson County, New York.

4. Sarah Lane, born 5 November 1833 in Devonshire, England, died 22 February 1916; married Daniel Dening and they resided in Montague, Lewis Co., New York, where she died.  Sarah's parents emigrated when she was about two years old.

Jane, born about 1806 probably in Colyton, Devon, England; married 3 May 1827 at Hawkchurch, Dorset, England, Robert Jeffrey, baptized 28 June 1801 at Hawkchurch, Dorset, England.  He was son of Thomas Jeffrey and his wife Elizabeth Tucker of Hawkchurch, son of John and Elizabeth Jeffry, also of Hawkchurch.  According to Oakes' "Genealogy and Family History of the County of Jefferson, New York," [p1198], Robert died in England, and in 1843 Jane emigrated with her children to live with her parents near Sackets Harbor, except one child who married and stayed in England.  Jane died in 11 July 1856 and is buried in Sulpher Springs Cemetery, her parents being buried next to her in later years.  She received a legacy in her father's will that same year, but she was noted as "a deceased daughter of said Thomas Lane" when the will was proved in 1861, when she would have been age 55.  Her youngest son, Duane, had a court appointed guardian at that time.
1. Sylvanus Jeffrey, baptized 25 May 1828 at Hawkchurch, Dorset, England. He was enumerated in the 1880 census of Sackets Harbor in Jefferson County, New York, as a 52 year old farmer of English origin; with him that year were his wife Mary Ann, an Irish woman of the same age, and a sister-in-law Elisabeth Stringer, age 47 from Ireland.
2. Elizabeth Jeffrey, baptized 19 September 1830 at Hawkchurch, Dorset, England; married Seth C. Larkins of Henderson, born 2 March 1828, died 22 April 1904.  Seth was active in the 10th NY Co. E during the Civil War.  She is mentioned in her father's will, and her family is mentioned in her brother Manuel's obituary.  Both are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Town of Henderson, Jefferson County, New York.  Parents of:

Matilda, baptized 17 June 1832 at Hawkchurch, Dorset, England, died 20 April 1909, age 76 years; married John Reader.  John came from England to Sackets Harbor in 1852.  He was the son of George Reader, born near Bridport (sic), Dorsetshire, England, who located at Sackets Harbor in 1851, where he died in 1871, aged 70 years. John's mother was Mary Huxford, of Uplyme, Devon, England.  John H. Reader had two brothers, John and George (twins), who were born in Lyme-Regis, Eng., in 1832.  In 1862, John H. enlised in Company I, 10th New York, Heavy Artillery, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war, and later received a pension. He served as town clerk of Hounsfield at least four years. Parents of:
1. Laura Reader, died 9 August 1855, age 4 months, buried in Lakeside Cemetery, Sackets Harbor, Jefferson Co., New York.
2. Henry H. Reader, born about 1856, died 14 April 1896, age 39 years, 7 months, buried in Lakeside Cemetery, Sackets Harbor, Jefferson Co., New York.  Father of:
1. Edward Reader, mentioned in his uncle Manuel Jeffrey's obituary in 1922 as residing in Sackets Harbor.
4. Emmanuel "Manuel," "of Hounsfield," baptized 24 April 1836 at Hawkchurch, Dorset, England; in the 1860 federal census, Manuel was living next door with his aunt Elizabeth and uncle William Stoodley.  He, along with his first cousin Jane Stoodley's husband Capt. Ralph Godfrey, were among those injured at Sackets Harbor in February 1884 during the dismantling of the War of 1812-era ship-of-the-line New Orleans, when it collapsed unexpectedly.  He was a stagecoach driver of some notoriety during the Civil War, and was later a merchant, and sexton of the Sackets Harbor Presbyterian Church and Methodist Episcopal Church, according to his obituary.  He married first Ida Palmer, who died in 1898, daughter of David Palmer and Fanny Livermore; they had no children.  He married second, Laura M. Roe, of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, a member of the Methodist Church.  Manuel and his wives are buried in Lakeside Cemetery, Sackets Harbor, Jefferson Co., New York.
5. Saxthenes, baptized 13 May 1838 at Hawkchurch, Dorset, England; he does not appear in American records so he is probably the one Oakes identified as staying in England.
6. Thomas Jeffrey, "now in the service of the United States as a soldier in Virginia"; married Julia Cunningham and removed to Mexico, Oswego Co., New York.  Parents of:
1. Matt D., mentioned in his uncle Manuel Jeffrey's obituary in 1922.
7. John Jeffrey, "a sailor who has been absent three or four years and has not been heard from by his relatives for some time, whose places of residence are not known and cannot upon diligent inquiry be ascertained."  He served in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War.  In 1865 he was discharged, and sent a telegram from New York City telling his brother Manuel to meet him at the rail station, but John never showed up and was never heard from again.
8. Duane Jeffrey, born about 1843 in New York, "a minor having his general guardian." His father apparently died while his mother was preganant for him.  "Said Surrogate [M.H. Merwin] did therefore appoint Samuel D. Barr, Esq., of Watertown, Jeff. Co., N.Y., the Special Guardian for said minor, to appear for him and take care of his interests in the matter of proving said will, he having first filed with said Surrogate his consent in writing to [?] appointed and to serve."

1. Charles E. Lane; married Clara E. Holbrook, died 3 May 1889, age 30 years, 5 months, 2 days, of Copenhagen, Lewis Co., New York, daughter of William M. Holbrook and Helen Watkins.  They resided at Sackets Harbor, town of Hounsfield, Jefferson Co. in the house where he was born.
2. Henry J. Lane, (at right) born 14 February 1841 in Sackets Harbor, Jefferson Co., New York, died 1915; married Rosaltha S. Payne, born 1841, died 1900, daughter of Worden Payne and Rhoda Warren.  Henry was engaged in the dry goods trade at Sackets for over 24 years.  He was elected supervisor of the town for the second time in 1887 and was a member of the New York State Assembly.  He served as the town clerk 3 years, assessor 3 years, and justice of the peace one term.  He was president of the village of Sackets Harbor for upwards of four years and served as Worshipful Master of the Sackets Harbor Lodge #135 of Free & Accepted Masons.
