        (4)  Samuel Cole, born 7 March 1698 in Wallingford, Connecticut; married 5 August 1725 in Wallingford, New Haven Co., Connecticut, Mercy Scranton, born about 1705 in Wallingford, New Haven Co., Connecticut. She was the daughter of John Scranton and Mary Seward, daughter of William Seward and Grace Norton. Parents of:
 
 
 

        (5)  Moses Cole, born 16 June 1726 in Wallingford, New Haven Co., Connecticut, died 1814 in Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, buried in Tanners Corners Cemetery in the same town; married 11 June 1746 in Wallingford, New Haven Co., Connecticut, Mary Sperry.  Moses and Mary lived for a time in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, where the family's association with the Brittons of Westmoreland probably began.  In 1765, baptismal records of the church at Westmoreland call Moses and Mary "of Putney" [Windham Co., Vermont] and "belonging to ye church of Cheshire."  The last record of baptism for them as parents in that church was in 1768, for their son Sperry.  Moses Cole is also recorded as a resident of Putney, Windham Co., Vermont, in the 1771 census of that place.  In the first federal census in 1790, he was enumerated in Thomlinson Town, Windham Co., Vermont.  He emigrated with his sons Moses and Samuel to Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York before the War of 1812, where he died.

        (6)  Moses Cole, born 1753 in Waterbury, New Haven Co., Connecticut, died in 1828 in Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, buried in Tanners Corners Cemetery of the same town; married 19 October 1775 in Putney, Windham Co., Vermont, Isabel Nelson, born 1751 in Brimfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts, died 1839 in Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, daughter of William Nelson, and his wife Isabel Lawson, of Brimfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts.
        Moses served during the Revolutionary War. 
        Moses Cole is recorded as a resident of the Town of Newport, in what became Herkimer County, New York, in the 1800 census.  In that vicinity several of the Brittons of Westmoreland had also settled, and together the Coles and Brittons were among the first pioneers to cut the roads in the northern frontiers of Jefferson County, and they played important roles in the War of 1812 engagements there. Also living in Newport were the Carter family from Kent, Connecticut, who intermarried with the Coles and Brittons, and also removed to Jefferson County.
        Moses and Isabel lived in Putney, Vermont, Newport, Herkimer Co., New York, and finally Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, where they both died.

William, born 1777, died 1847 in Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York; married Elizabeth, born 1788, died 1850.  William was a captain in the War of 1812, and he served as a lieutenant in his brother-in-law Col. Calvin Britton's 108th Reigment of New York Militia, Gen. Jacob Brown commanding.  Parents of:

1. Nathan, the first white child born in the new town north of the Black River, was named after his father's brother.
5. Isabel, born about 1790, presumably in Windham Co., Vermont, died 3 March 1861, age 61 years; married Stephen Gould, born about 1785, died 5 October 1853.  They are both buried in Parrish Cemetery, Town of Pamelia, Jefferson Co., New York.
6. Rebecca, born about January 1787, died 26 July 1855, age 68 years, 6 months; married about 1806 Jonathan Webb, deacon, born 23 March 1785, died 19 February 1867 in Jefferson Co., New York.  He participated in the War of 1812.  Jonathan and Rebecca are buried in Perch River Cemetery, Town of Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York.
7. Moses, born about December 1790, died 27 July 1842, age 51 years, 8 months; married Lucinda Snow, born about 1797, died 25 September 1849, age 52 years, 4 months.  He was commonly designated as "Moses, Jr." in court records and on his tombstone, although he was the third in his lineage to bear the forename.  They are both buried in Tanner's Corners Cemetery, Town of Alexandria, Jefferson Co., New York.  Information on this couple comes partially from the research of John Collins at <johnc@ecsu.campuscwix.net>.
