        (1) John Bouton was born about 1615 in France and emigrated in 1635 to Boston, Massachusetts, aboard the ship Alliance.  Despite years of tradition that he was the son or grandson of Count Nicholas Bouton, a French Huguenot, there is no evidence to support such a relationship.
In 1635, he married in Hartford, Connecticut, Alice Kellogg, born 1612, died December 1680.  Though Alice's exact parentage has not been established, she is known to have been a close relative (perhaps a daughter, sister or niece) of Nathaniel Kellogg, a founder of Hartford, Connecticut, and son of Phillippe Kellogg of Great Leighs, Essex Co., England.  Nathaniel's nephew, Joseph Kellogg, was an early settler in nearby Farmington, Connecticut.

Children:

  1. John, mentioned below
  2. Richard, born 1639 in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut, died 27 June 1665 in Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Connecticut

        (3)  Matthew Boughton, born 24 December 1661 at Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, died after 25 November 1723, when he is recorded as exchanging land with Thomas Taylor of Danbury, Connecticut.  Although he has been assigned Anna Whitney St. John as wife, his spouses name has in fact not been uncovered.
On 17 December 1691, Matthew and his brother John sold their houses and land in Norwalk to Thomas Bennitt, Sr.; in the deed they were called "of Danbury" and the spelling of their names was "Boughton" rather than the prior "Bouton."  Matthew and John were the only Boughtons to remove to Danbury during this time period.
Matthew died intestate, but details of his family are contained in the estate papers of his daughter Jane.  The papers mention brothers Joseph, Benjamin, Samuel, Matthew, John, and sisters Elizabeth and Sarah.

Children:

  1. Elizabeth, born about 1691; married Isaac Wildman.
  2. Samuel, born about 1694; married first Ruth Waterbury; married second Abigail.

    1. Benjamin, removed to Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York. He was appointed administrator of his brother Miles' estate in 1783. On 19 April 1794 Benjamin Boughton of Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York, signed a deed in which he mentioned "land which was set out to the heirs of my father Benjn Boughton decd" (Danbury LR 6:520).
  8. John, born about 1710; married Rebecca (Seymour) Whitney.

        (4)  Joseph Boughton, born about 1701, died before 3 December 1767; married first Emm Fairchild, born 30 August 1672 at Stratford, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, baptized at 11 April 1674 at Woodbury, died before 1712, daughter of Thomas and Susanna Fairchild, and former wife of Francis Barnum; Joseph married second, Abigail.
Division on the intestate estate of Joseph "late of Danbury" occured on 21 January 1768 was made as follows: one-third to "Abigail, widow and relict," a double part to "Frances [sic] Boughton eldest son," and single parts to "second son" Joseph Boughton and "only daughter" Mary, "all the children of the said decd."

Children:

  1. Francis, removed to Dutchess Co., New York, was settled at one time in New Durham, Green Co., New York; married Esther Stowe, by whom he had ten children:  James, Edward or Lyle, Clark, Polly, Lewis, Rebecca, Ann, Francis, Jr., Theodocia, and Eliza. Most of these children settled in Schoharie and Albany counties.

Mary, born about 1728, died before 11 November 1797, buried in North St. Cemetery, Danbury; married first before 1748 Mr. Combs and had three children; married second before 21 January 1768 Josiah Vining.  Her estate was distributed on 28 March 1798 to her son William "Comes," to the named children of her deceased son John Combs, and to her "only daughter Em Gorham, wife of Benjamin."

Note: there is a 40-year gap between the ages of the preceding three siblings and Joseph of Nassau,
but naming patterns persist; further evidence is needed to establish exact relationships.

In the 1790 census of the Town of Clinton appear the following "Bouton" men:
Joseph, Sr. (followed by Lemuel Hide), Francis, Joseph, Jr., and Benjamin.

        (5)  Joseph Boughton, born about 1768 (according to age at death), probably in Danbury, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, died 7 April 1840 in Schodack (some sources say Nassau), Rensselaer Co., New York, and is buried in Nassau, Rensselaer County.  On 25 December 1786, he married Jennet Guffin, born 3 March 1764 in Scotland, died 15 January 1830 in Schodack and was buried in Nassau, which was at first called Union Village.
They moved from Danbury to Schodack, Rensselaer County, New York, in 1795 or 1796, stopping for some time in Staatsburgh or Hyde Park, Dutchess Co., New York. He purchased land on the Van Rensselaer manor, lying along what was afterward, if not then, the Boston and Albany turnpike, eight miles from Albany.  The organization of the town dates from 17 March 1795, at the time of the division of Rensselaerwyck.  The first town meeting was held on 7 April 1795.
After Jennet died, he married on 28 April 1830 Sarah Bates, of Carlisle, Schoharie Co., New York. She died 24 August 1840 in Schodack and was buried in Nassau.
Joseph Boughton was one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church in Nassau. At its first meeting he was elected and installed ruling elder in the church, which office he held until near his death. He was earnest, active and conscientious in his religious life. Church records show that he was always in his place at all the church meetings. He was genial, kind and sociable in his family and neighborhood. His family was a family of singers, particularly of sacred songs.
Also installed as an Elder in the Nassau church was Andrew Guffin, born 29 May 1756 in Newry, County Down, Ireland, died 26 April 1842 in Shodack, Rensselaer County.  In 1781, he married Hannah Ostrum, born January 1762 in Dutchess Co., New York.  Andrew was Jennet (Guffin) Boughton's brother.
In 1833 Joseph Boughton visited his brother Francis in Green county, and on his way back stopped to visit sister Mary at Hyde Park, New York, whom he had not seen for twenty years.  She was living with a son-in-law by the name of Smith, who had a daughter who played the organ in the Episcopal church at that time.
Joseph "Bouton" of Shodack made his will 3 February 1839 and on 3 August 1840 it was proved in Rensselaer County [Vol. 28, p. 129].  In it he named his wife Sarah Bates, and all his children then living plus their residences.  To son Francis he bequeathed "the farm in Worcester, Otsego Co., New York," indicating the family had a presence there too.  Welston Brockway, George W. Brockway, and George W. Boughton witnessed the will.  The latter may be the "G.W. Boughton" who died in August 1863 and is buried in Pleasant Lawn Cemetery, Parish, Oswego Co., New York, with wife Eliza and son Henry.
Joseph and both of his wives are buried in the Nassau Cemetery.

Children (names and residences taken from Joseph's will):

  1. James, born 19 October 1787 in Danbury, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, died 1811; married 10 March 1811 at Carlisle, Schoharie Co., New York, Charlotte Locke, and removed to a farm there.  He was an executor of his father's will.

  3. Andrew, born 12 April 1792 at Danbury, Fairfield Co., Connecticut; married Lucena Rogers.  They lived on a farm in Shodack, Rensselaer County.  He was an executor of his father's will and a witness to his brother-in-law John Ferguson's will.
  4. Joseph, born 16 August 1794 at Danbury, Fairfield Co., Connecticut; married first on 28 February 1816 at Hyde Park, Mary Burnett; married second at Rock City, Saratoga Co., New York, Catherine Stever, where they lived.  Joseph was a witness to his brother-in-law John Ferguson's will.
