John Phifer was born 1813 in Laurens County, SC; died 1 Aug 1862 in AL. He married Mary Elizabeth Cook, daughter of John Cook and Gillie Colbert, on 5 Mar 1835 in Henry County, GA. Mary was born 19 Sep 1820 in Elbert County, GA, and died 13 Dec 1907.
John came to Walker County, Alabama about 1840 and settled on a farm near Providence Church (Oakman). He farmed until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he entered the Confederate Army and was either killed or died during the war. Apparently, his body was not returned to Walker County, as he is not buried at Providence Graveyard with his wife, Mary. Ples Day, in "The Story of my Life", states that John died and was buried beside the road near the Brilliant Mines in Alabama. [Marion County]
In History of Walker County by Dombhart, the father of John Phifer is listed as "Martin Phifer of Tuscaloosa". Barbara Dunn's research indicates that John's parents should be Samuel Phifer (b 1788 in Newberry County, SC, d 1858 in Henry County, GA) and ? Walker (b c1790 and died in SC). Miss Walker was the daughter of Elijah Walker and wife Elizabeth.
Samuel and Miss Walker were the parents of 3 children:

A daughter, Elizabeth, born 1825, may be either from the marriage to Miss Walker or from marriage to Nancy -- in the absence of definitive records and dates of death, it is impossible to determine at this time.
Samuel resided Laurens District, SC as proved by 1820 Federal Census; in probate records 1819-21 and court records 1823-25. Moved to Henry County, GA by 1827 (per deeds).
