WEB PAGE GUESTS

This file was updated June 16, 2000.  It contains over 1,400 entries for the surname BOYD.  The majority of entries are for Counties Antrim and Armagh, but there are entries for Derry, Down, Monaghan, and Tyrone, with miscellaneous others.  There are about 450 entries for the surname MCCLELLAND and about 200 for WARNOCK.  There also are a significant number of BIRCHES and LOCKHARTS.

This file will be converted to a standard database file and indexed in the future.  In the meantime, you are welcome to browse or use the FIND (CTRL-F) button for your research.  To go to County, Parish, and Townland headings using FIND, precede the place name with a dash, as in –Armagh County,

–Ballymore Parish, or -Demone.

Many of the items in this file were transcribed from handwritten notes and other difficult to read sources.  It has not been thoroughly edited, so please use with caution.   Every case is not fully documented.  If you find a record that is not clearly documented and it is important in your research, you can contact me at lboyd2@uswest.net and I will see if I can help.

NORTHERN IRELAND BOYDS DATA BASE

Lawrence H. Boyd, Updated October 26, 2000

THIS ARCHIVE HAS NOT BEEN EDITED FOR ERRORS AND OMMISIONS.  PLEASE USE WITH CAUTION.

This file contains a collection of genealogical events connected with the surname “BOYD” and selected collateral surnames, including LOCKHART, MCCLELLAND, and WARNOCK.  Events consist of births, baptisms, deaths, marriages, and other records that describe individuals with the selected surnames.  Events are described and stored on “records.”  Each record contains fields for a name, residence, description of event, date, place of event, parents’ names, source, and comments (in brackets).   Some records will be short, as in “James Boyd, Cavanacaw, “Special Census, 1825.  Other records will contain more information and may have extended comments about the event.  Some local areas will have a large number of names.  Others will have few or none.  In cases of multiple names, it is frequently possible to detect family profiles.  For example, if two records contain the same surnames and different first names, but have the same parents’ names, then one can surmise that the individuals in the two records are siblings.  Likewise, some local areas might have multiple events for the same first and last names.  In these cases, it may be possible to detect which records pertain to the same person and from the multiple listings, construct a profile about that person’s life.

As in any classification scheme, there are problems.  For example, individuals may be born in one place, live in a number of different places, do business in another, and die in some other place.  For this reason “residence” will mean the place usually associated with the individual in documents and other records, as in “Robert Boyd of Demone,” with other places, if involved, being described in the Comment section.  In cases where the place of the event is different from residence of the individual, the record will be repeated in two or more places to facilitate the detection of families.

There is no ideal way to organize records, because clusters of events generally do not conform to political or geographical boundaries, instead crossing Townland, Parish, and even County lines.  The problem is that clusters cannot be known before analysis.  An alternative would be to divide the country into regions in which parishes and townlands would be contiguous or relatively close together, depending on the size of regions defined.  Unfortunately, the number of ways that a country can be divided is virtually infinite and the user would need a map and key to whatever scheme was used.  Instead, we will organize counties, parishes, and townlands alphabetically, leaving the job of reorganizing events and places to electronic searching, filtering, and other operations. A list of parishes is provided for each County.  In paper format, one can flip alphabetically through the document to find the county of interest, the parish of interest, and the townland of interest.  However, the most efficient way to access the data is to use the FIND (Search) option.  County headings and parish headings will be preceded by a dash to provide easy and direct access to those sections.  For example, to go directly to the section heading for Ballymore Parish, one would type “–Ballymore Parish,” or even “-Ballymore.  To look through all events involving the surname, James Boyd, one would bring up the FIND dialog and step through each occurrence.  This format also provides a convenient vehicle for entering new information, as it comes in.  A later version of this archive will be ported to a popular data base application in an internet format to enable a wide range of capabilities, including Boolean search and subsetting.

In this edition, most of the data have come from County Armagh, where we concentrated our search for our Boyd family.  However, there are significant entries for County Tyrone and County Antrim and there are some entries for Counties Derry and Fermanagh, and Monaghan.  The entries for County Monaghan resulted from a recent lead that led to consider the possibility that our Boyds came from or spent some time in the area bordering Monaghan County and County Armagh. This will change as attention is directed to other places.

In a future version of this material, the entries will be standardized in a common format and stored in a data base application.  This would enable easy cross-referencing and flexible search operations. Perhaps, in a later version, it will be ported to the Internet.    In the meantime, readers can skim through an electronic or hard copy of this file in its present form to find a city representing the area in which they are interested or use the FIND feature of the word processor.  Likewise, to find instances of a particular local area, such as “Drumgaw,” or a name, such as “John Boyd,” one can use the FIND option.

Sections are organized alphabetically by county, specifically, County Antrim, County Armagh, County Derry, County Fermanagh, County Monaghan, and County Tyrone.

[This family of Boyds is the same family described under Poyntzpass/Tandragee Boyds that linked William Boyd with the McClellands of County Monaghan, the Kellys of Banbridge, County Down, and the Bennets of Poyntzpass.  It is not clear whether the father, Joseph, and the brothers and sisters of William migrated to the Poyntzpass, Armagh area or Castleblaney, Monaghan area.

More about Dervock Boyds

The Boyds listed in the Griffith Valuation (1861/62) could have been related to the Boyds of Dervock from which William Boyd of Poyntzpass descended.  According to the family history of the Bennet Family of Poyntzpass, the last of this line of Boyds left the Dervock area in 1875 for Killarney, Warwick Lakes, Queensland, Australia.

Alexander Boyd, Dervock, Derrykeighan Parish, Griffith Valuation, 1861/62.  This Boyd is likely a

descendant of the Boyd family related to William Boyd of Poyntzpass, above.

Alexander Boyd, Ballyratahan Lower, Derrykeighan Parish, Griffith Valuation, 1861/62.  This Boyd

could be a descendant of the Boyd family related to William Boyd of Poyntzpass, above.

Frances T. Boyd, Tullybane, Derrykeighan Parish, Griffith Valuation, 1861/62.  This Boyd could be a

descendant of the Boyd family related to William Boyd of Poyntzpass, above.

Gamble Boyd, Dervock, Derrykeighan Parish, Griffith Valuation, 1861/62.  This Boyd is likely a

descendant of the Boyd family related to William Boyd of Poyntzpass, above.

John Boyd, Livery Lower, Derrykeighan Parish, Griffith Valuation, 1861/62.  This Boyd could be a

descendant of the Boyd family related to William Boyd of Poyntzpass, above.

Samuel Boyd, Dervock, Derrykeighan Parish, Griffith Valuation, 1861/62.  This Samuel Boyd

theoretically could be the brother of William Boyd (b. 1766) of Poyntzpass, above, depending on when the Griffith survey was taken in this area.  More likely, he would be a descendant.

Samuel Boyd, Dervock, Derrykeighan Parish, Griffith Valuation, 1861/62.  This second Samuel Boyd

theoretically could be the brother of William Boyd (b. 1766) of Poyntzpass, above, depending on when the Griffith survey was taken in this area.  More likely, he would be the son of Samuel or a descendant.

William John Boyd, Stroan Upper, Derrykeighan Parish, Griffith Valuation, 1861/62.

[This Boyd is likely a descendant of the Boyd family related to William Boyd of Poyntzpass,

above.]

Daniel McClelland, Carnoff, Derrykeighan Parish, Griffith Valuation, 1861/62.

[This is the only McClelland found in the Griffith survey for this area.

[ There are no Warnocks.]

[At the time of the Griffith Survey, there were pockets of Boyds in Parishes around Derrykeighan Parish.  These included Billy Parish, with 20 Boyds listed, Ramoan Parish, with 36 Boyds listed.  Immediately over the Antrim/Londonderry border in Ballyrashane, there is 1 Boyd and 1 McClelland.  In Ballywillin Parish, there are 2 Boyds.  In nearby Coleraine Parish, there are 20 Boyds and in Dunboe Parish, there are 5 McClellands.  One reason for scanning this area from Dervock to Coleraine is that we have to speculate about how Joseph Boyd met and married Elizabeth McClelland, who was said to be from County Derry.  It is conceivable that Elizabeth was from one of these areas in county Derry, but up close to Dervock, County Antrim.  Joseph and Elizabeth were the parents of William Boyd, who prospered in Poyntzpass.  The McClelland wealth was said to have been passed down from the brother of Elizabeth McClelland who married a Lord Blanny of County Monaghan.]
