Dempsey M. Phillips

Not much is known about the Phillips family. We have a letter written by a comrade in arms to Dempsey Phillips' widow, Emily Wills, telling her of his death as a prisoner of the Union Army at Rock Island, IL. Their daughter, Martha Susan, married (1) John Wasson Hackworth and (2) Jesse Young Wallace. Emily moved to Texas and married (2) Joseph Kyser Alderson.

A webpage posted by Jean Smallwood has a list of Confederate POWs who died at Rock Island (including Dempsey Phillips). This site also includes some historical background of the POW camp and the conditions there during the War, and information on ordering historical material about the camp from the U.S. Army, who still operate Rock Island Arsenal there.
