William W. Hackworth and Jane Pennington had two sons and several daughters. One son was named for the founder of the Texas, Stephen F. Austin. The other son, John W. Hackworth, is our ancestor. He was born in 1845 and married Martha Susan Phillips. They had two children, Victor and Loula, before he died at an early age from pneumonia resulting from smoke inhalation suffered while serving as a volunteer fireman in Brenham. He was postmaster of Brenham at the time of his death.
Martha Susan remarried to a local farmer, Jesse Young Wallace. He also had two children from a previous marriage, and they subsequently had two more children together.
