Kurhessen

The best History of Hesse is by Karl Demandt - "Geschichte des Landes Hessen" History of the Hessen State. The chart of the Kurfurst (Elector) of Hesse from 1256 to 1918 shows the Elector of Hesse-Kassel from 1821 to 1847 as Wilhelm IX. The grossherzog (grand duke) of Hesse-Darmstadt from 1830 to 1848 was Ludwig X. Some where in the 1500's the Elector (i.e. he was entitled to vote for the Holy Roman Emperor) divided hesse between his sons so that there was a Hesse-Kassel, and Hesse-Darmstadt. Julius Ceasar and the Romans knew our people as the Chatti. They lived around the rivers Eder, Diemel, and Fulda. This germanic tribe joined the Frankish Empire c. 500 as it was constantly menaced by Saxony and Thuringia. In the eighth century they were converted to Christianity. The name "Hessi" first appears about 720. In the 17th century Hesse-Hanau was aquired by the Kassel branch of the family. The Hesse-Kassel branch was seated near Kassel and the family name of the Landgrave was Moritz. I have pictures of Schloss(Castle) Fasanerie a few miles south of Fulda, taken in the 1970's where they lived and a Moritz in the picture I found in a magazine.

Kurhessen means the area of Hesse and Hesse is one of the states of Germany. Hesse's territory has changed all around over the years prior to 1918 as the nobility married, died out or as in the case of the Degenfelds simply sold their land to Prince Ernst von Isenburg - Budingen.

Who you belonged to all depends on what year you are talking about. In 1837 Vollmerz etc. belonged to Hesse Cassel. It was then spelled with a "C" not a K as is today, just like Hinkelhof was spelled then Huenkelhof and my name was Pfeuffer instead of Pfeiffer. Now the area is no longer a part of Hesse Kassel but our area and Vollmerz is part of and governed from Hesse-Hanau. Vollmerz in 1830 had its own mayor but no longer does as with each of the other villages. They are under the Mayor of Schluechtern. So until 1848 Vollmerz and the Graf Degenfeld's small grafshaft were part of Hesse Cassel but now part of Hesse Hanau. You might compare it to State of Hesse, County of Schluechtern, Town of Vollmerz. Hans Moeller told me to this day the people of ourfew villages are referred to as Degenfelders.

The area can also be defined as the northern part of the Kinzigtal (Valley of the Kinzig river). On some of the brouchures of the area it is so called.

Most usually, the map of Kreisstadt Schluechtern (District of Schluechtern) says "Schluechtern between the Rhoen, Spessart and the Vogelsberg. The map like this I have says Schluechtern comprises 11 towns: Ahlersbach, Breitenbach, Elm, Grundhelm, Herloz, Hohenzell, Hutten, Klosterhofe, Kressenbach, Vollmerz and Wallroth. The map shows Ramholz, Hinkelhof etc. but not in the more bold type.
