The Ifft/Ift/Eft families first appear in Sannerz and Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany (Co Hesse) which is in present day Schlüchtern, Hessen, Germany. The earliest known Ifft ancestor was Hans Ift who died March 26, 1719 in Sannerz, Hesse, Germany.

This name could also be spelled Yfft and probably originated in the small village of Ifta in the Rhinggau area. Ifta is about 120 km from the Bergwinkel or Kinzig Valley and is in the old East Germany. The priest at this time spelled Hans son Caspars surname Yft and later Ift."


Hans Ift ( -1719) died March 26, 1719 in Sannerz, Hesse, Germany.

Caspar Ift (1684-1737) was born 1684 in Hesse, Germany, and died November 10, 1737 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany. He married May 09, 1713 in Ramholz, Hesse, Germany, Elisabetha Eyring, daughter of Henrich and Beatrice (Nix) Eyring, who was born December 01, 1692 in Weichersbach, Hesse, Germany and died July 10, 1770 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany.

Georg and Johann Adam.

Georg Ift (1714-1779) was born October 02, 1714 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany, and died November 11, 1779 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany. He married (1) August 21, 1738 in Ramholz, Hesse, Germany, Anna Margareta Marburger, daughter of Johannes and Eva (Lamb) Marburger who was born 1719 in Steinmühle?, Hesse, Germany and died January 11, 1740 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany. He married (2) January 17, 1741 in Ramholz, Hesse, Germany, Margaretha Knauf, daughter of Georg and Margaretha Weining Knauf who was born April 04, 1723 in Ramholz, Hesse, Germany and died April 01, 1744 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany. He married (3) February 24, 1752 in Ramholz, Hesse, Germany, Anna Margaretha Bernges, daughter of Johannes and Anna (Loos) Bergnes who was born December 10, 1728 in Hintersteinau, Hesse, Germany and died Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany.

Johann Adam Ift (1756- ) son of Georg and Anna Margaretha (Bernges) Ift was born June 11, 1756 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany, and died in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany. He married September 09, 1777 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany, Margaretha Euler, daughter of Johannes and Margaretha (Heyl) Euler who was born December 21, 1749 in Breunings, Hesse, Germany and died December 21, 1814 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany.

Johann George and Johann Peter .

Johann Peter Ift (1790-1868) son of Johann Adam and Margaretha (Euler) Ift, was born January 19, 1790 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Germany, and died May 18, 1868 in New Sewickley Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He married (1) 1820 in Vollmerz, Hesse, Anna Barbara Günther, daughter of Johann Adam and Margaretha Elisabetha (Heilmann) Günther who was born May 30, 1801 in Elm, Hesse, Germany and died December 30, 1828 in Elm, Hesse, Germany. He married (2) May 13, 1831, Elm, Hesse, Germany, Anna Günther, sister of his deceased wife and daughter of Johann Adam and Margaretha Elisabetha (Heilmann) Günther born May 05, 1806 in Elm, Hesse, Germany and died August 28, 1886 in New Sewickley Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.

Note: Anna Günther had a child before her marriage to Johann Peter Ift with Christoph Rau, born May 09, 1803 in Elm, Hesse, Germany. Elisabeth was born April 18, 1827, Elm, Hesse, Germany. When Johann Peter and Anna (Günther) Ifft were married in 1831 all children of their previous unions become their wards. Elisabeth Ifft, emigrated with the family to America in 1831, and is named in Johann Peter Ifft's will as his step-daughter. Peter, Nicolaus, Peter and Barbara Catharina.

Children of Johann Peter and Anna (Günther) Ifft are:
Anna Barbara, Adam, Anna Barbra , Jacob, John, Catherine, Gertrude, Anna and Margaret.

Anna Barbra Ifft (1834-1919) daughter of Johann Peter and Anna (Günther) Ifft married 1853 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, John Bensing (1836-1898) son of Henry and Elizabeth Bensing They resided in Phillipsburg (Monaca), Beaver County, Pennsylvania, Venango County, Pennsylvania and Malinta, Henry County, Ohio. John and Anna (Ifft) Bensing raised two boys, John and Albert Smith, these boys were their nephews, the sons of Grandma's sister (Margaret) who had passed away with tuberculosis. There was a third child, but John and Anna did not rear that third child. [recollections of Thelma and Olga Brobst.] These children are mentioned in Anna (Günther) Ifft's estate files.
