2 CONC by his parents; one brother Oscar Wisch; 2 nephews, Harlow and Blair 
2 CONC Wisch; and 1 niece, Bernice Klement. He was born on the home farm one 
2 CONC mile south of Fort Atkinson, the son of Herman and Bertha (Rutzen) Wisch. 
2 CONC He married Marjorie Gebhardt on December 25, 1942 at St. Paul's Ev. 
2 CONC Lutheran Church, Fort Atkinson, WI. She preceded him on Sept. 15,  1997. 
2 CONC He graduated from Fort Atkinson High School in 1926 and from U.W. Madison 
2 CONC School of Engineering in 1930, with a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural 
2 CONC Engineering. In 1932, he was employed as a promotional representative for 
2 CONC Wisconsin Electric Power Co. in Fort Atkinson for 40 years, retiring in 
2 CONC 1972. He served in the Air Force during WWII. he was an active member of 
2 CONC St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, serving on the Church Council, the 
2 CONC Stewardship, financial, elders and evangelism committees, St. Paul's 
2 CONC Men's Club, Lakeside Lutheran High School Men's Club, U.W. Alumni Club, 
2 CONC U.W. Agricultural and Life Sciences Society, the American Legion and the 
2 CONC American Association of Retired Persons. In 1952, he was chosen to serve 
2 CONC on a committee for the organization of an area Lutheran high school, 
2 CONC culminating in the formation of Lakeside Lutheran High School in Lake 
2 CONC Mills. He served as the charter secretary of the Association and as a 
2 CONC member of its Board of Regents for 10 years. He further served on its 
2 CONC General Board for another 20 years. After retirement, he served 10 years 
2 CONC on the Jefferson County Committee for Aging and for District I for Aging, 
2 CONC including 11 southwestern counties. Funeral service will take place 
2 CONC Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998 at 1:30 PM at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, 
2 CONC Fort Atkinson WI, 53538 with Rev. Paul Scharrer and Rev. Micheal Duncan 
2 CONC officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Atkinson. 
2 CONC Friends may call after Noon on Thurs. at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church 
2 CONC until the services.  Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to 
2 CONC consider memorials to Lakeside Lutheran High School or St. Paul's Ev. 
2 CONC Lutheran Church.

2 CONT Rodgers, Lt. Colonel Joseph C. U.S. Army retired and former Columbia 
2 CONC Hospital Administrator, Milwaukee, WI died on May 14 in Sun City, Las 
2 CONC Vegas, NV after a lengthy illness. He was born on August 13, 1919 in 
2 CONC Detroit, Michigan but moved to Milwaukee at an early age. He graduated 
2 CONC from Washington High School in 1937 and entered the U.S. Army in 
2 CONC September 1942. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the 
2 CONC United Nations Service Medal, the American Theater Ribbon and the World 
2 CONC War II Victory Medal. He completed his undergraduate degree at the 
2 CONC University of Wisconsin (Madison). He was recalled to active duty in 1948 
2 CONC and was awarded the Republic of Korea Unit Citation, the Korean Service 
2 CONC Medal and the Purple Heart. He was wounded at the Chosin Reservoir, Korea 
2 CONC on Dec. 1, 1950 and was an elite member of the "Chosin Few". Joe 
2 CONC completed a Masters Degree in Hospital Administration at Northwestern 
2 CONC University in 1954. He was a Hospital Administrator at Columbia Hospital 
2 CONC Milwaukee for 25 years, (retiring 1979) and a Fellow of the American 
2 CONC College of Hospital Administrators. He took pride in membership in the 
2 CONC Cudworth Legion Post, the Retired Officers Association, the Veterans of 
2 CONC Foreign Wars, the Red Arrow Club of Milwaukee and the University of 
2 CONC Wisconsin Alumni Association. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserves in 
2 CONC 1970 as a Lt. Colonel. Joe moved from Brookfield, WI to Las Vegas, NV in 
2 CONC 1994. He is survived by his wife of 52 years LTC (Ret.) Gwendolyn Rodgers 
2 CONC of Las Vegas. Also survived by sister Eleanor (Cal) Koberstein, Las Vega, 
2 CONC NV; brother Al (Joyce) Rodgers, Mukwonago, WI; Ann (Ed) Rogers, 
2 CONC Jacksonville, FL and brother-in-law Russell Sparks of West Des Moines, 
2 CONC IA. "Uncle Joe" will be sadly missed by all including his 10 nephews, 4 
2 CONC nieces and 17 great nephews and nieces, and other relatives and friends. 
2 CONC Memorial Services with military honors will be held at Southern Nevada 
2 CONC Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, NV, Friday, June 1. In lieu

2 CONT Surface-Active Selective Adhesion Promoters
2 CONT Surface-active additives generally decrease the adhesive properties of a 
2 CONC polymer. With proper molecular design, however, a surface-active additive 
2 CONC can be used to deliver functional groups to surfaces. End-functional 
2 CONC block copolymers are effective for this purpose and impart selective 
2 CONC adhesion character to polymeric substrates.  An important aspect of this 
2 CONC research is the study of how surfaces reorganize when their environment 
2 CONC is switched from hydrophobic to hydrophilic.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Novel Biomaterial Surfaces with Bioinductive Character
2 CONT Methods are under development for the decoration of biomaterial 
2 CONC substances with a variety of bioinductive substances that promote cell 
2 CONC adhesion and promote cell proliferation. These novel materials are not 
2 CONC only biocompatible -- they also promote specific biological events to 
2 CONC occur. Patterned model substrates are utilized to study fundamental 
2 CONC interactions between cells and biomaterial surfaces. Specific projects 
2 CONC involve the fabrication of biosensor coatings that promote the growth of 
2 CONC capillaries, and polyethylene implants that promote bone formation.

2 CONT Room Temperature Fabrication of Ultrathin Silicon Oxide Films
2 CONT Ultrathin silicon oxide films are useful as oxygen barriers, fillers, 
2 CONC membranes, and insulators for microelectronics. A new process has been 
2 CONC developed for creating high energy silicon oxide films from low energy 
2 CONC siloxane precursor films. Precursor films can be applied to virtually any 
2 CONC inorganic or polymeric substrate. This approach is being applied to 
2 CONC produce the next generation of durable aircraft coatings, gas separation 
2 CONC membranes, and scratch-resistant polymer coatings.

2 CONT Functional Polymers
2 CONT End-and-Center functional polymers are synthesized and studied as model 
2 CONC systems for functional surfaces. They also constitute a practical means 
2 CONC of controlling surface and interfacial properties of polymers. A 
2 CONC combination of careful synthesis, theory, and experiment is used to 
2 CONC develop molecular design criteria for these useful additives.

2 CONT From what I know my father's parents had seven boys (including my dad) 
2 CONC all of which were born in and around
2 CONT Milwaukee, WI. Most of my relatives still live back east. Although now my 
2 CONC family is located in Idaho, Oregon, and Illinois. I remember as a child 
2 CONC traveling up and around the Green Bay area where my fathers parents had a 
2 CONC cabin and owned alot of land. At this time I am still trying to obtain 
2 CONC information about the exact location of the property and how much we 
2 CONC still own. Both of my dad's parents have died and I believe the land is 
2 CONC still own by the Koberstein Family.  Most of my relatives have been 
2 CONC buried in WI. at a family plot which dated way back into the early 
2 CONC 1800's. I think the cemetary was call "Holy Hill", but again I am still 
2 CONC trying to obtain its exact location in WI. I do remember as a young child 
2 CONC visiting this cemetary that contained HUGE monuments that marked the 
2 CONC royalty of some family members. I think the cemetary was a Catholic 
2 CONC cemetary, because I vaguely rememeber visiting the grave sites and 
2 CONC placing flowers there AFTER we had attended Mass.   What information do I 
2 CONC need to retrieve for the benefit of adding this to our web site? Please 
2 CONC advise me with any helpful advise that you can supply.  Thanks for your

2 CONC our grandfather Joseph Benedictus Custer Koberstein and his wife Maria 
2 CONC Elisabeth Karg or Karch who came to America from Germany  on the SS Donau 
2 CONC on October 23, 1880.  Joseph was born on 3/20/1861 in Berlin.  Maria was 
2 CONC born l/21/1863 in Volkenshire, Bayern, Germany.  They were married 
2 CONC l/2/1882 in Sauk County, WI.  Joseph's father was Johann Koberstein. his 
2 CONC mother was Katharine.  Maria's father was Johann Karch or Karg, her 
2 CONC mother Anna Marie.  They had seven  children. George Joseph (my father)

2 CONT Joseph Koberstein of Town of Greenfield meets death under wagon
2 CONT Joseph Koberstein, a farmer of town Green field, was dragged to death by 
2 CONC his team of horses Monday evening.  It appears that Mr. Koberstein was 
2 CONC driving a spirited young team at a rather lively rate of speed.  Fred 
2 CONC Verch, who was also bound for home, drove his team near Mr. Koberstein's 
2 CONC team, and also drove at a pretty lively rate.  Near McArthur's linen mill 
2 CONC Mr Verch passed Mr. Koberstein, and when the latter neared the corner at 
2 CONC the "red school house," his team became unmanagable, Mr. Koberstein was 
2 CONC thrown from his rig and, having the reins fastened about his body, he was 
2 CONC dragged some distance.  When picked up he was unconscious and died before 
2 CONC reaching his home.  His body was horribly mangled.
2 CONT A coroner's jury composed of A. Fry, H. Niles, T. O'Neil, H. Netcher, F. 
2 CONC Keyser and J. Kramer was summoned by Sheriff Stackhouse and the inquest 
2 CONC was conducted by Coroner Gibbons at the home of the deceased Tuesday.  
2 CONC The jury decided that the accident was caused by the team following and 
2 CONC frightening the team of the deceased, and that he came to his death by 
2 CONC being dragged and kicked in the head by a horse.  Mr. Koberstein was 
2 CONC about 37 years of age.  He leaves a wife and seven children.  He carried 
2 CONC insurance policy for $2000 in the Modern Woodman Lodge.

2 CONC variations of the longer name Katharine Maria Eva Schneider.
2 CONT Johann family (of Sauk County Wisconsin) records state that Johann was 
2 CONC born in Berlin while Katharine was born in Volkersleier, which is very 
2 CONC near to Morlesau.  It seems possible for Johann to have been born in 
2 CONC Berlin then moved to the Volkersleier/Morlesau area where he meet 
2 CONC Katharine Maria Eva Schneider and married her some date before the 
2 CONC unnamed child above was born and died on February 6, 1841.  They would 
2 CONC have had some other children, perhaps, until the birth of Joseph 
2 CONC Benedictus on March 20, 1861 (20 years later).  This is a long child 
2 CONC bearing time, but possible.  Maybe Joseph was a "bonus" child that came 
2 CONC late in child rearing.  Joseph then immigrated to the United States on 
2 CONC November 5, 1880.  Joseph then married Maria Elizabeth Karg "Mary", 
2 CONC daughter of Johann Karg and Anna Marie on January 2, 1882 in Greenfield, 
2 CONC Sauk, Wisconsin.  Mary was born January 21, 1863 in Volkersheier, Bayern, 
2 CONC Germany.  It makes since that he could marry someone from the locality he 
2 CONC immigrated from himself.

2 CONT Vera Kasten, age 88 of Baraboo, passed away on Friday, November 7, 2003 
2 CONC at her home.
2 CONT Vera, the daughter of George and Minnie (Rau) Koberstein, was born on 
2 CONC August 19, 1915 in Baraboo. She was united in marriage to Frank Kasten on 
2 CONC April 20, 1932. He preceded her in death in 1974. She had been employed 
2 CONC as a nursing assistant at St. Mary's Ringling Hospital and later St. 
2 CONC Clare Hospital until she retired in 1980. Vera was a wonderful mother, 
2 CONC grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an excellent baker and was 
2 CONC well known for her chocolate chip cookies. Vera was a member of St. 
2 CONC John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo.
2 CONT She is survived by 4 children, Dean (June) Kasten of Littleton, NC, Jean 
2 CONC (Duane) Brown of Cottage Grove, Karen Reppen of Baraboo, and Ruth Hindes 
2 CONC of Baraboo; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 4 
2 CONC great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Edna Hornbeck of Baraboo and 
2 CONC Adeline (Don) Buehler of Eagan, MN; nieces; nephews; other relatives and 
2 CONC friends.
2 CONT In addition to her husband, Frank, Vera was preceded in death by her 
2 CONC parents; her daughter June, and an infant daughter, Cynthia; a sister, 
2 CONC Audrey; and a son-in-law, Aldon.
2 CONT Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2003 
2 CONC at St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo with Pastor Myron Schwanke 
2 CONC officiating. Interment will follow in the Walnut Hill Cemetery. Friends 
2 CONC may call on Tuesday, November 11th, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of 
2 CONC services, at the church. Memorials may be made to St. John's Television 
2 CONC Fund or St. John's Lutheran Church. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting 
2 CONC the family. 
2 CONT "I'm Free" 
2 CONT Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free. I'm following the path God laid 
2 CONC for me. I took God's hand when I heard the call; I turned my back and 
2 CONC left it all. I could not stay another day to laugh, to love, to work or 
2 CONC play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found that place at the 
2 CONC close of day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered 
2 CONC joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss. Ah yes, these things, I too, 
2 CONC will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine 
2 CONC of tomorrow. My life's been full, I savored much, good friends, good 
2 CONC times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief; don't 
2 CONC lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with 
2 CONC me--God wanted me now, God set me free.

2 CONC their client misrepresented the time she lived in the state.

2 CONT Madison (AP) Attorney N.R. Torrison of Manitowoc, accused of unethical 
2 CONC professional conduct, has filed an answer with the state supreme court 
2 CONC denying any wrong doing.
2 CONT The board of state bar commissioners in a complaint filed Feb. 28 accused 
2 CONC Torrison of assisting Fay Thorne, former  Tow Rivers policeman in 
2 CONC defrauding a crditor, Erna Griep, of approximately $3,500 and aiding 
2 CONC Thorne in evading alimony payments to his wife, Kathryn.
2 CONT He also was charged  with unduly delaying payment of a judgment of 
2 CONC $431.59 to Chester and Irene Wiltgen of Manitowoc, and of offering money 
2 CONC to Emil Peterik, from whom the judgment was won, to say that he (Peterik) 
2 CONC had not paid it.
2 CONT Guided by Conscience
2 CONT "If I acted in bad taste or against the rules of legal ethics," Torrison 
2 CONC said in reply to the fraud charge, "I do so unwittingly, and at all times 
2 CONC acted according to the dictates of my conscience and did not know then or 
2 CONC now how I erred."
2 CONT In answer to the alimony accusation, Horrison, who had obtained $3,300 in 
2 CONC back pay for Thorne from the city of Two Rivers, said it was an 
2 CONC "unfortunate situation," but that it was necessary to turn it over to 
2 CONC Thorne instead of paying Mrs. Thorne's claim to "avoid possible criminal 
2 CONC charges directed against myself."
2 CONT Torrison said he made a "satisfactory" settlement with the Wiltgens Jan. 
2 CONC 2, 1936, and did not delay payment or offer Peterik money to conceal 
2 CONC payment of the judgment.
2 CONT Two other attorneys, Darrel D. MacIntyre and J. Philip Koberstein, both 
2 CONC of Madison, were accused of unprofessional conduct at the same time.

2 CONC Portage until his retirement to Florida last year. Memorial services are 
2 CONC set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Port-Axtell Funeral Home in Portage.

2 CONC Rodd farm south of this city, met his death at Baraboo last Friday when 
2 CONC an auto he was driving became unmanageable and he was thrown out on a 
2 CONC cement side walk, his death being instantaneous.
2 CONT  
2 CONT The cause of the accident is ascribed to the fact that in making a turn 
2 CONC his car suddenly ran into some loose sand that had been washed down on 
2 CONC the street from a hill, by a recent rain. As he was still in the city 
2 CONC limits of Baraboo it is not thought that he was running exceptionally 
2 CONC fast, and as there was no one with him, the exact facts will probably 
2 CONC never be known.
2 CONT  
2 CONT The deceased came to this locality from Baraboo four years ago and rented 
2 CONC the Fred Rodd farm south of town, where by hard work and economy he 
2 CONC managed to lay aside a little money and on this very trip in which he met 
2 CONC his death, had purchased a farm on his own in his old home neighborhood 
2 CONC near Baraboo, where he was raised and where his mother, brothers and 
2 CONC sisters still live.
2 CONT  
2 CONT Mr. Koberstein was born near Baraboo, in January 1894, marrying in his 
2 CONC home community near that city in 1913. He leaves a wife and three 
2 CONC children. The children are Oliver aged six, Vergil, aged five, and 
2 CONC Elenor, aged three. A mother, five brothers and one sister also mourn his 
2 CONC loss. His father, before him also met his death by accident having been 
2 CONC killed by a runaway team.

2 CONT The funeral was held in Baraboo on Monday afternoon.
2 CONT  
2 CONT The deceased was universally respected by all who knew him here being a 
2 CONC man of steady industry and sterling honesty. His family has the heartfelt 
2 CONC sympathy of the whole community.

2 CONC three sisters, Nancy Erdman, Beeba Penny and Shirley Horne, all of 
2 CONC Janesville; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Moore, Olga 
2 CONC Koberstein, Dagmar (Russell) Slinde, Leonette (Charles) Sprecher and 
2 CONC Nancy Talbert; and brothers-in-law, Leonard (Donna) Nelson, Thomas 
2 CONC (Regina) Nelson, Norman (Arlene) Nelson and Milo (Frances) Nelson. She 
2 CONC was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sally Hannawell; brother, 
2 CONC Robert Hannawell; brothers-in-law, Bill Erdman, Ralph Horne, Arnold and 
2 CONC Julian Nelson, Donald Moore, Herbert Talbert, Robert Schulz and Richard 
2 CONC Brattlie; sister-in-law, Frances Schulz Brattlie; nephew, Donald 
2 CONC Koberstein; and great-nieces, Beth Baumgartner and Rhonda Slinde. Funeral 
2 CONC services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive,

2 CONC WI at the age of 76 on April 8, 2000. For 56 years she was the beloved 
2 CONC wife of Marson; loving mother of Nancy Koberstein of Evanston, IL, Dr. 
2 CONC James (Barb) Koberstein of Duluth, MN, Mary (Richard Hansen) Koberstein 
2 CONC of Evanston, IL; fond grandmother of Charles Hipwood of Chicago, IL, 
2 CONC Carey (Paul) Kasbohm of Minneapolis, MN, Paul Medlin of Bloomington, MN, 
2 CONC Brian Koberstein of Grand Forks, ND, Michael Koberstein of Duluth, MN; 
2 CONC sister of Dr. James (Eve) Semmens of Seabrook Island, SC, Elizabeth 
2 CONC (Richard) Mueller, Asheville, NC, Thomas (Barbara) Semmens Jr., of 
2 CONC Marshall, MO; many other relatives and friends. Pat grew up in Shorewood 
2 CONC and was a graduate of Shorewood High School and Rockford College. She was 
2 CONC a resident of Mequon for 34 years and was employed as a bookkeeper for 
2 CONC Auto Body Services, Inc., Betty Johnson's and the Grand Lodge of 
2 CONC Wisconsin. Pat was very civic minded and a firm believer in education. 
2 CONC She was a past member of the Shorewood Junior Women's Club, Mequon 
2 CONC Women's Club, League of Women Voters, East Mequon School Board and 
2 CONC Rockford College Alumni Association. After retiring to St. Germain, she 
2 CONC was active with the St. Germain Lioness Club, St. Germain Women's Service 
2 CONC Club and Friends of the Plum Lake Library. Pat was an avid reader, 
2 CONC knitter and bridge player. She enjoyed quilting and enjoyed her St. 
2 CONC Germain and Sayner sewing groups. Visitation will be at the Chapel of the 
2 CONC Chimes - Wisconsin Memorial Park Cemetery in Brookfield, WI from 12:30 PM 
2 CONC to 1:30 PM on Tuesday; April 11, 2000. Services will be at 1:30 PM.

2 CONC Friday, Nov. 7, 2003 in The Oaks at Sweeten Creek.
2 CONT A native of Milwaukee, Wis., she has resided in Asheville since 1985. She 
2 CONC was the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Corrine Pike Semmens. Beth was 
2 CONC a graduate of The University of Wisconsin, receiving her Bachelor of 
2 CONC Science in Nursing.
2 CONT A former volunteer at Mission St. Joseph s Hospitals, Beth was also the 
2 CONC Editor of the "Crowfields Chatter" for 12 years. Beth enjoyed doing 
2 CONC genealogy of her families and is listed on the Internet for some of the 
2 CONC genealogy books she authored. She also conducted graphoanalysis for 
2 CONC family members. She was a member of the Asheville Racquet Club for 10 
2 CONC years and a member of the Biltmore Forest Country Club. She attended 
2 CONC Arden Presbyterian Church when her health permitted.
2 CONT She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard, and their children, 
2 CONC Donald B. Mueller and his wife, Nancy, of Columbia, Mo., Dr. Robert A. 
2 CONC Mueller and his wife, Ellen, of Bristol, Tenn.; and Patricia L. Skattum 
2 CONC and her husband, Robert, of West Bloomfield, Mich.; grandchildren, 
2 CONC Christina Martin and her husband, James, of Independence, Mo., Greg 
2 CONC Mueller and Jeff Mueller, both of Columbia, Mo., Benjamin Mueller and 
2 CONC Jennifer Mueller, both of Bristol, Tenn., Katherine Skattum of Santa 
2 CONC Clara, Calif. and Randall Skattum of Charlotte.
2 CONT In addition, Beth is survived by Thomas P. Semmens, her brother, and his

2 CONC Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. She 
2 CONC was a self-employed beautician for 40 years. She enjoyed the Cubs, the 
2 CONC Bears, dancing and spending time with family and friends. She is survived 
2 CONC by two sons, Lawrence and Kenneth (wife Deborah) Koberstein of 
2 CONC Plainfield; four daughters, Deanna (husband Don) Bunting of Downers 
2 CONC Grove, Patricia (husband Robert) Reed, Arleen Dreher and Geri Lynn 
2 CONC (husband James) Blalock; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two 
2 CONC brothers, Harold (wife Lois) and John "Jack" McMaster; and three sisters,

2 CONC and Margaret Freitag. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil 
2 CONC Koberstein, in 1977. Visitation took place Thursday, April 18, at Toon

2 CONC Gina Lynn.  My sister Arleen is actually Ruth Arleen on her birth 
2 CONC certificate, but we have always called her Arleen.  My father Virgil 
2 CONC Luther Koberstein passed away June 23, 1977 in Hinsdale Hospital.  His 
2 CONC mother Anna Ida Koberstein passed away February 7th 1986 at the age of 
2 CONC 89. She lived in Baraboo, Wisconsin.  She was born in Hodge County on 
2 CONC January 16th 1897.  She was the daughter of Fredrick and Freda(Lesk) 
2 CONC Kujath.  She married Edward Koberstein on February 19th 1915.  He died in 
2 CONC an automobile accident near Lodi in 1920.  My dad's brother, Oliver 
2 CONC Koberstein received the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star in World War II, 
2 CONC he died March 13, 1944 of gunshot wounds at Bougainville in the Solomon 
2 CONC Islands.  My dad's sister Eleanor died January 19th.1986.  I have more 
2 CONC information if you need it, also both our kids are married and we have 
2 CONC two grandchildren and one on the way.  I haven't looked over the entire 
2 CONC web site and when I do I will let you know of things that need to be
