2 CONT Germany, Pennsylvania, or Shenandoah Co. Virginia. During his adult years

2 CONT lived in Shenandoah Co. Virginia, and there married Elizabeth Miller, or
2 CONT Muller,
2 CONT (1764-1853) a native of Germany. Both Jacob and Elizabeth died in
2 CONT Shenandoah Co.
2 CONT and were buried in the Sponaugle Cemetery, at St. David’s Church,
2 CONT Shenandoah Co.

2 CONT "JACOB COVERSTONE was born in Shenandoah County, Va., in 1815, and was
2 CONT one of
2 CONT the ten children of Jacob and Elizabeth (Clem) Coverstone, natives of
2 CONT Virginia
2 CONT and of German extraction. He removed with his parents to Licking County,
2 CONT Ohio,
2 CONT in 1825, and thence to Champaign County, where they cleared up a new
2 CONT farm, at
2 CONT which our subject assisted, attending school at intervals. At his
2 CONT majority, he
2 CONT began to work for himself the first two years for his father, and then
2 CONT at
2 CONT jobbing generally. In 1840, he married Margaret Windsor, who died in
2 CONT 1849,
2 CONT leaving four small children; and, March 28, 1850, Mr. Coverstone married
2 CONT Jane
2 CONT Halderman, daughter of George and Elizabeth Halderman, natives of
2 CONT Virginia, and
2 CONT of German ancestry. To this union were born ten children, nine of whom
2 CONT are yet
2 CONT living. Our subject moved to this township in the spring of 1852, and the
2 CONT year
2 CONT following purchased his present farm, then in the wilderness. He put up a
2 CONT double
2 CONT log cabin, and with the usual hard work and frugality has succeeded in
2 CONT replacing
2 CONT the log with comfortable frame buildings, and, instead of the forest
2 CONT groves,
2 CONT broad acres of cultivated soil to the number of 160. He is a man of
2 CONT enterprise,
2 CONT and in politics a Democrat. His eldest son, Lewis J., enlisted in 1862,

2 CONT visiting friends in Ohio, and, after being out one year, died of typhoid

2 CONT Holland for some time and from there to America. Research of several

2 CONT Peggy (Coverstone) Vencill and Judy (Coverstone) Stevens indicates that

2 CONT family were more likely germans, Coverstone being an anglicized version
2 CONT of the
2 CONT german name Koberstein. A Johann Georg Koberstein, from Germany, lived
2 CONT at
2 CONT Shrewsbury, York Co. Pennsylvania in the middle 1700’s. His wife was
2 CONT Anna
2 CONT Catharina Glassbrenner. Although without proof, Johann is believed to
2 CONT have been
2 CONT the immigrant ancestor of the Coverstone family, and the presumed father
2 CONT of
2 CONT Jacob1 Coverstone, the earliest proven ancestor of the Coverstones in

2 CONT manumission records and that a Georg Koberstein was naturalized in

2 CONT work in drill and reorganization. It moved to Memphis, then down the
2 CONT river to
2 CONT Vicksburg, where it participated in the battles and siege that resulted

2 CONT downfall of that stronghold. It again moved to Memphis, and in June,
2 CONT 1864,
2 CONT formed part of an expedition marching into the interior of Mississippi
2 CONT under
2 CONT General Sturgis. It met with disaster, sustaining a loss of one half its
2 CONT number.
2 CONT The following month it pursued the same line of march with better
2 CONT success. Later
2 CONT the Regiment operated in Arkansas and Missouri, and in December, 1864,
2 CONT joined
2 CONT General Thomas at Nashville, participating in the battle at that place.

2 CONT followed in the pursuit of Hood, and in March, 1865, joined Canby at
2 CONT Mobile.
2 CONT After the evacuation it moved north to Montgomery. The Regiment was

2 CONT mustered out August 19, 1865, after sustaining a loss of over 500 men

2 CONT term of service.

2 CONT resides. He also owns 240 acres of land in another tract. The result of

2 CONT marriage was nine children, as follows: Louisa A., William C., Nancy J.,

2 CONT resident of Jasper County, now follows agricultural pursuits on section

2 CONT Township. He dates his residence here from 1852. He was born in Harrison

2 CONT Ky., April 10, 1829, and is a son of William and Susan (King) Gosnell,
2 CONT both of
2 CONT whom were natives of Virginia. They were married in their native State,
2 CONT and
2 CONT thence removed to Kentucky, where Mr. Gosnell cleared and developed a
2 CONT farm. In
2 CONT 1839, accompanied by his family, he went to Rush County, Ind., where he

2 CONT opened up a large farm, and there spent the last years of his life. His

2 CONT then on the frontier, and he engaged in some of the Indian

2 CONT         George Gosnell, whose names heads this sketch, was a lad of ten
2 CONT eyars
2 CONT when he went to Rush County, Ind., where he grew to manhood. Under the
2 CONT parental
2 CONT roof he remained until he reached his majority. In February, 1852, in
2 CONT Rush
2 CONT County, he was united in marriage with Sarah Campbell, a native of that
2 CONT county,
2 CONT and a daughter of John and Nancy Campbell. The wedding tour of the young
2 CONT couple
2 CONT consisted of a trip to Illinois. They arrived in Jasper County on the 1st
2 CONT of
2 CONT October, 1852, and Mr. Gosnell entered a tract of one hundred and sixty
2 CONT acres,
2 CONT where he now resides, and also a timebered tract, consisisting of one
2 CONT hundred
2 CONT and sixty acres. The land was in Its primitive condition, not a furrow
2 CONT having
2 CONT been turned or an improvement made, but with characteristic energy he
2 CONT began its
2 CONT development. He plowed and planted and in course of time rich and fertile
2 CONT fields
2 CONT yielded to him abundant harvests. He built a good hewed-log house, and
2 CONT lived in
2 CONT true pioneer style, for Jasper County was then on the frontier. All kinds
2 CONT of
2 CONT wild game could be had in abundance, and deer were frequently seen in
2 CONT great
2 CONT droves. There were also many wolves. As the years passed, however,
2 CONT civilization
2 CONT changed all this , and with the onward march of progress Mr. Gosnell kept
2 CONT pace
2 CONT until he had transformed his wild land into one of the best farms of
2 CONT the
2 CONT community. The olog cabin has long since given place to a comfortable
2 CONT frame
2 CONT residence, and other substantial improvements have been
2 CONT added.
2 CONT         By the union of our subject and his wife six children were born,
2 CONT and are
2 CONT now all married and heads of families.* William C. and John are both
2 CONT farmers of
2 CONT this county; nancy is the wife of George Matheney, of Jasper County;
2 CONT Zelda is
2 CONT the wife of Charles Mann; Mary is the wife of Jackson Dumont; and Richard
2 CONT is a
2 CONT farmer fo this community. There are also twenty-four living
2 CONT grandchildren. The
2 CONT mother of this family died in 1885, and Mr. Gosnell has since wedded
2 CONT Mrs.
2 CONT Carolin Burgund, a widow, who was born in this county, and is a daughter
2 CONT of
2 CONT Robert Polys. The marriage was celebrated January 4, 1889 The lady has
2 CONT one
2 CONT daughter by her former marraige, Julia M.
2 CONT Burgund.
2 CONT In early life Mr. Gosnell was an old-line Whig, and cast his first vote
2 CONT for
2 CONT William Henry Harrison. Since the orgaznization of the Republican party,
2 CONT he has
2 CONT been a stanch advocate of its principles. Our subject is a friend to
2 CONT all
2 CONT educational, social and moral interests calculated to benefit the
2 CONT community, and
2 CONT is prominent and influential citizen, widely and favorably known in
2 CONT this
2 CONT locality. His wife is a member of the Christian Church. For forty-one
2 CONT long
2 CONT years, Mr. Gosnell has been a witness of the growth and development of
2 CONT Jasper
2 CONT County, and has aided greatly in its progress. He is well numbered among
2 CONT its
2 CONT honored pioneers, and justly deserves representation in its
2 CONT history."
