Casper Report

Caspar • Casper

Everyone who has ever tried to trace his ancestors is indebted to others for passing on information. Sometimes the people who share information came by it easily, and sometimes they had to work very hard to obtain it. I don't know anyone, though, who has worked harder than Charles Sheridan to obtain the information he so generously shared with me. He has spent years poring over microfilms of church records written in Latin. It's difficult enough to deal with microfilmed records in English, but deciphering old records in foreign languages and in foreign styles of handwriting is especially grueling, and sometimes impossible. Charlie has made a number of trips to the archives in Strasbourg to examine original records where the microfilms were illegible. He was also kind enough to let me know where I could order a book about the villages of Stundwiller and Oberroedern. If it hadn't been for Charlie, all we'd know now about our Casper ancestors is that they came from Alsace around 1830. Every item of information about the ancestors of our immigrants, Joseph Casper and Elizabeth Roehrig, came from him. My heartfelt thanks to Charles Sheridan for his hard work and his abundant generosity.

Another kind soul to whom we owe thanks is Helen Rankin of the Carroll County (Ohio) Genealogical Society. When I wrote merely requesting a copy of Joseph Casper's naturalization record, she sent me back a fat envelope packed with every bit of information available there about the Casper family: news reports, obituaries, church records, and more. Many thanks, Helen.
