FIRST GENERATION

1. Benjamin RAGLAND⁽¹⁾⁽²⁾⁽³⁾⁽⁴⁾ was born in 1790 in Abbeville, South Carolina. He died in 1858 in Bibb Co., Alabama. In Charles J. Ragland's Vol. 2 about the Ragland family he has that Benjamin Ragland married Liza Poss (or Boss) on 6 Feb 1817 in Wilkes or Wilkinson Co., Georgia. This was quite likely *NOT* our Benjamin. I have recently corresponded with a descendant of the other Benjamin Ragland who was the Benjamin Ragland who married Susannah Poda in Wilkes or Wilkinson Co., Georgia on 28 Sep 1820. It seems likely, therefore, that this Benjamin was the Benjamin who married Liza Poss (Boss) three years earlier.

I was trying to find a Ragland Connection. I'm related to Susanna Poda
that married Benjamin Ragland in Wilkes Co., GA. They then moved to
Auguta Co., AL abt 1825 and on the Coosa Co., AL. I found their
descendants in Utah being LDS and their name is spelled Rylant. These
were German speaking people from the Rhinelands of Germany and the name
must have been pronounced wrong. The family could not find a marriage
record or last name for Susanna in AL. I found their ingurie one night
and got a hold of them. We have the same childrens names and I had a
bunch of Wilkes Co., GA documents that I shared with them. I was just
hoping to find the ragland connection. But I hope this helps you. By
the way Susanna Poda's brother's last name is PODY. Thier Father's name
was Henry PODER. I found him once on the 1790 Wilkes Co., GA tax list
and a will from his widow Mary. Henry was a German Hessian Soldier sent
over here to fight for the British during the Rev. War and he was taken
prisoner and escaped ended up in Shenandoah Co., VA serving for the
Americans. I love geneology. It took me 10 yrs to track all this down.

The vast majority of my (R.D. Lambert) notes about Benjamin's family with Peggy Canterberry come from Linda Potts.

He was married to Peggy CANTERBERRY on 10 Aug 1818 in Bibb Co., Alabama. Peggy CANTERBERRY was born about 1798. She died about 1822 in Bibb Co., Alabama. Benjamin RAGLAND and Peggy CANTERBERRY had the following children:

+3 ii. Samuel M. RAGLAND.
+4 iii. Marion Lawson RAGLAND.

He was married to Elizabeth THORNTON on 22 Apr 1824 in Bibb Co., Alabama. Elizabeth THORNTON was born in 1799 in North Carolina. She died about 1865 in Bibb Co., Alabama. Benjamin RAGLAND and Elizabeth THORNTON had the following children:

+6 ii. James RAGLAND.
+7 iii. Benjamin Cleveland RAGLAND.
+8 iv. Evan T. RAGLAND.
+9 v. Alexander RAGLAND.
