Descendants of William Seymour

Generation One

1. William1 Seymour1,2 was born between 1761 and 1765 in Ireland, perhaps Ulster.3,4,1,5,6,7,8,9 He married Letitia Dixon circa 1793 in Ireland.1 He died after 9 Oct 1841 in probably Rankin County, Mississippi, when his son John F. sold land for him.10 He was buried in Pelahatchie, Rankin County, Mississippi.1

He was also known as William Seymore,10,7 He & William Semore.6 He and Letitia Dixon were converted to Methodism on hearing John Wesley preach in Ireland. He and Letitia Dixon arrived in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina, either 1797 or 1798 with Jane Seymour and William D. Seymour, their children, on the same vessel as the Perry family.1,5,11,12,13 He was granted letters of administration for the estate of Alexander Lindsey in Feb 1798 in Newberry County, South Carolina.12 In May 1798 in Newberry County, South Carolina, William Seymour was administrator when renewal was granted for a Warrant of Appraisement of the estate of of Alexander Lindsey.14 Circa 1799 William Seymour and Letitia Dixon resided in Newberry District, South Carolina.11 His has not been found in the 1800 census of South Carolina though both Newberry Laurens Counties were read.15,16 He petitioned for naturalization on 30 Oct 1808 in Newberry District, South Carolina.17,5 Circa Jun 1810 William Seymour was enumerated in Newberry District, South Carolina,, the household including Joseph Wesley Seymour, Jane Seymour, William D. Seymour, John Fletcher Seymour, Sarah R. Seymour, and Letitia Dixon.6,18 His home became a stopping place of early itinerant [Methodist] preachers in the South.19 Before 1820, William Seymour was widowed by the death of Letitia Dixon in probably Newberry District, South Carolina.7 Circa Jun 1820 William Seymour was enumerated in Newberry District, South Carolina,, the household including Joseph Wesley Seymour, William D. Seymour, Sarah R. Seymour, John Fletcher Seymour, and Jane McConnell.7,20 Spring of 1826 William Seymour removed with Joseph Wesley Seymour and Frances Vaughn to Montgomery County, Illinois, from South Carolina, the group including William Dixon Seymour, John Henry Seymour, Sarah R. Seymour, and Dorothy Vaughan.1,21,22,23 He was described as "an old, broken down Irish gentleman, a devout Christian, and of higher cultivation than his children" in Oct 1826.23 In 1830 William Seymour was enumerated in Montgomery County, Illinois, in the Joseph Wesley Seymour household.8,24 His has not been found in the circa Jun 1840 census of Rankin County, Mississippi, though I have carefully examined the few entries with men aged over 70.25 On 9 Oct 1841 William Seymour of Rankin County, Mississippi, sold 80.25 acres in Rankin County, Mississippi (W/2 NE/4 S36 T5 R5E) for $100.31.10 He and Jared Seymour were apparently related; as Jared (the same age as William's youngest child) lived in Montgomery County, Illinois and married into the same Dickson family to which William's wife apparently belonged.

Letitia Dixon1,2 & Lettius Ellen Dixon. She was born after 1765 in Ireland.3,4,1,6,9 Neither she, nor any in the William Seymour household, have been found in the 1800 census of South Carolina.15,16 Circa Jun 1810 Letitia Dixon was enumerated in Newberry District, South Carolina, in the William Seymour household.6,18 No record has been found of her death which occurred before 1820 probably Newberry District, South Carolina, when she was not enumerated with her family.7 She and Francis Dickson were apparently related; could they have been siblings?
