John, meaning the "Lord's grace," is the source of many patronymics-Jennings among them. The evolution is something like this: John, Jons, Johnson, Janson, Jennings. Other variations of the name are Jinnins, Jennins, Jenyns, Jenynges, Jannings, and Jenning, with Jennins, and Jennyns being found in the colonial records Gennequin is the French form and Gening is old German of the eighth century. In this connection it is interesting to note that Hanson and Hancock are from Hans, the Flemish nickname of John or Johannes.
The family of Jennings is of very ancient origin and its history of interest to the families of that name in the United States. They seem to have settled in England before the Norman Conquest, being of Danish extraction, altho some say that the family originated in Carnarvonshire, Wales, from whence it spread over England following the eleventh century, and later into Ireland, France and Germany.
The first member who settled in the Kingdom of Great Britain appears to have been a Danish captain, brought into England between 1017 and 1025 by Canute. King of Denmark. Here Captain Jennings was baptised into the Christian faith, and was given certain manors lying upon the seacoast near Harwich by Canute as a reward for his former services for his father, Sweyne, King of Denmark.
Another interesting member of the family seems to have been another Captain Jennens, who, we are told, had the honor of bringing the body of Richard Coeur de Lion back to England.
The name was also prominent in Warwickshire, Yorkshire, Somerset, Middlesex and Straffordshire during the time of Henry VIII. One of Henry's favorites was a Robert Jennings who was presented, about 1545, by the King with a sword and belt, preserved by his descendants, who are, I think, still living on the estate in Berbyshire in the parish of Shettle, also a gift of the king to Robert Jennings. He hald the appointment of chief warden, deerstalker, and ranger in Derbyshire.
An early record gives us Humphrey Jennens, ironmaster of Birmingham, who was living in the grace of the king in 1575. His daughter, Anne, married into the house of the Earl of Suffolk.
Then it is said that there was a famous British admiral, Sir John Jennings, Fifteenth child of his father. Philip, of Duddleston Hall. Shropshire. The admiral was at the capture of Gibralter, in 1604, and was knighted for gallant conduct. His seat was the Manor of Newselle, Hampden Court.
All the world knows of Sarah Jennings, First Duchess of Marlborough and mistress of the Queen's robes. To her must be given a considerable share in the Duke's advancement and rise to greatness. She was an imperious lady with a temper of her own, and when the doctor told her one time that if she weren't blistered she would die, whe replied. "I woun't die and I won't be blistered!" and for a time she kept her word.
A John Jennings was quartermaster under Cromwell and owned nearly all the land on which Birmingham, England, now stands. Here he established, about 1840, the iron works which were the foundation of the city's wealth. One of the grandsons of this John Jennings was William Jennings who became fabulously wealthy and died without direct heirs. His carelessness brought about the greatest lawsuit the world has ever known. This suit is chancery involved more than five million pounds, and its duration was a full century. It was upon this suit that Charles Dickenson based his "Jarndyee and Jarndyee" in "Bleak House," following the real incidents of the case closely, particularly the story of Richard Carslone and Wilkie Collins. "Women in White" is partly founded upon a phrase of this celebrated case, and other novels have drawn material from it.
This friendly suit would never have ruined and driven to madness scores of men and women and squandered hundreds of thousands of pounds if William Jennings had not mislaid his spectacles. William was born in 1700 or 1701 and lived to the age of 98, unmarried, during which time he had accumulated a vast estate. In 1798, having destroyed all previous wills, he wrote a new one and went to consult his solicitor before signing the document. He forgot to take his spectacles and , as the solicitor's pair did not fit him, he put his will in his pocket and returned home. In a few days he died and his unsigned will was found still in his coat pocket.
Several claimants to the estate immediately appeared, including among others Lord Curson; Mary, Viscountess of Andover; and William Pindar Lygon, the first Earl of Beauchamp. The Curson Family secured all the real estate, and Richard Penn Curson was created Earl Howe in 1821 at the cost, it is said of 24,000-the earldom having lapsed in default of male issue. The Beauchamps and Andovers consolidated their claims and secured L750,000 each. This was the last money ever paid out of the estate. Since that time thousands of pounds have been spent in searching church records, public documents, libraries, and even tombstones, with the object of establishing a line of descent for one claimant or another from the Jennings line. More than seventeen lawsuits have been before the court, and in 1934 one was started by certain members of the Jennings family of the United States. I understand that it was either thrown out of court or never allowed to be presented for want of sufficient evidence.
Later American echoes of the Jennings family's "Castles in Spain" include the publicity given the settlement of the estate of Edwin B. Jennings, recluse of Chicago, who died in 1926 leaving an estate of $5,000,000. which was divided among cousins, relatives of the fifth degree. A vast estate was left in 1889 by John Drake Jennings, Chicago Financier, but was undivided until it amounted to $12.000,000 in 1942. At that time it was to have been settled and distant relatives were being sought, as most of the immediate heirs had died.
Many Pilgrams of Jennings name and blood found homes in America. Who was the first is difficult to say, but we find that Nicholas of Hartford, afterward of Saybrook, came over in 1634 in the Francis of Ipswich at the age of 22, and a John-either his father or his brother, for we believe both came early-came over the next year and settled first at Hartford and later at Southampton, Conn. At about the same time, perhaps a year or two later, Joshua, who is believed to be another brother came and records show also Jonathan of Norwich, 1684; Richard of New London, 1675: Samuel of Portsmouth, R. I., 1655; and Stephen of Hatfield, who married Hannah Dickinson, widow of Samuel Gillett, who was carried captive to Canada by the Indians, where a daughter was born to whom was given the "Captivity."
Then there was Samuel Jennings of Aylesbury, Bucks, England, governor of New Jersey, who spelled his name with only one "n". Someone has said that "one "n" was airy enough for him." Another Colonial Jennings of importance was Edmund Jennings, who was secretary of Colonial Maryland. In 1728 he became third husband of Ariana Vanderhayden Frisby Bordley. Their daughter, Ariana, married John Randolph, attorney-general of Virginia. They became the parents of Edmund Randolph, Attorney-General under President George Washington, in the first Cabinet.
The American ancestor of this branch of the family-often called the New Jersey branch-is not certainly known altho they are credited with having come from Suffolk Co., Eng. There is a family tradition to the effect that this ancestor was a Benjamin, who came in the ship "Caledonia" with his seven sons, but that the ship was wrecked near the coast of Perth Ambey, and the "seven brothers" were scattered and were never reunited. The log book was found or saved and is preserved in the New York Records. There is no record of the list of passengers landed, but tradition speaks of the "seven brothers", naming them as Joseph, Zebulon, Jacob, Benjamin, Jr., Jonathan, John, and David. Altho they are called "brothers," many think their relationship is not so close, some of them being not nearer than cousins.
Many branches of the Jennings had coats of arms. One, granted in 1641, was borne by one Pilgrim Father, Peter Jennings, who came from Yorkshire, and in 1157 was living in York Co., Va. It is blazoned as follows: "Argent a chevron between three plummets sable. Crest, a griffin's head couped between two wings inverted proper; in the beak a plummet pendant sable, Motto: "Il Buon Tempe Verra." The griffin as anan emblem dates back to the time of the Phoenicians, and is one of the most valued of such that he will dare all dangers, even death itself, rather than become a captive. This arms was borne by Jennings. Lord Mayor of London, sixteenth century, but his crest was a wolfs head.

While we have no positive knowledge regarding our English ancestry, I cannot but think, we are from the Sir John Jennings branch. We are told Sir John was a graduate of Oxford College in 1585, and our Joshna, we are led to believe, was a man of education. He married into one of the best families in Hartford, Conn., and was also one of the largest individual land owners of his day.
Sir John Jennings had twenty-one children only sixteen have been found. Leaving five unaccounted for by name - I believe our Joshna is one of the five.
The Jennings family were true friends of the first King James and the first King Charles of England; and they spent their large estate in supporting them. In later years when these two Kings' children and grand-children came to the throne, and tried to pay back the debt by giving position at court to Sir Richard's children, aomt tautingly said, "They are only the daughters of a poor Hartfordshire squire". But their beauty, purity and loveliness with true thankfulness for favors, bestowed upon father and grandfather of the reighning families held them firm, and carried those "poor daughters" to the highest place next to the throne of England. So the Jennings blood flows through the veins of most all the titled families of England.
For my part I am glad Sir John Jennings did just as he did. King James the First was the means of getting us the best version or translation of the Holy Scriptures. We selected fifty-four of the most learned men in the world at-that-time, and in 1611 forty-seven of these men completed the task assigned them; and hence we have the King James translation of the Holy Bible today. Sir John died in 1642 but Sir Richard Jennings was in King Charles army with his troops and was taken prisoner by the Round Heads.
We made an effort to connect ourselves with the family of Humphrey Jennings of Birmingham, England, whose grandson Wm. Jennings died in 1799 leaving a large estate in iron mines and factories valued at about 40,000,000 lbs. sterling: but Humphrey Jennings was blessed with a number of beautiful daughters and their father being a rich man, they married into the titled families of England. One of these Lord Howe, administered upon the Wm. Jennings estate. So the heirs of Humphrey Jennings have the property today, but they bear other names than Jennings. The Sir Edmund Jennings family are another of the prominent ones at Yorkshire, England.

P.S. Ralph Jennings father of Sir John Jennings married the daughter of Sir Ralph Roulett and goldsmith of London. Sir John Jennings married Alice Spencer. He built the Water End House at St. Albans, a massive stone structure which is still standing and in good condition.
His grand-daughter Sarah Jennings married John Churchill a soldier in the English Army. She had him promoted until he was at the head of the Army as Duke of Marlborough.
There was also a prominent Admiral in the English Navy at that time by the name of Jennings.
In 1381 Matthew Jennings a gold-smith advanced money to King Richard 2nd.
Robert Jennings was prominent in Henry the Eights' reign.
John Jennings was Mayor of Guildford 1419 to 1435.
Bernard Jennings was Mayor of Guildford 1466 to 1475.
Robert Jennings the son of Humphrey Jennings was the correspondent and attorney of the Duchess Sarah. He was the father of William Jennings of Birmingham, who died a bachelor having a large estate which was refered to previously.
The Jennings Genealogy by W. H. Jennings, in the N.Y. Library has a typed note in the front: "My Jennings family chart compiled from the records which belonged to my grandmother, Mrs. Mary Jennings Hardester, describes that Joshua Jennings who resided in Connecticut before 1650 was born in 1622 and was the son of John and Ann Smith Jennings of Kilwick Parish, Yorkshire, England, who were the grandparents of my immigrant ancestor William Jennings of Virginia. References my family records and Jennings chart in the Genealogical Archives of the British Museum, London, Engl. -- by Jos. Cook Bass, formerly of Richmond, Va. (p. 39 is in pencil.)"
Welles in American Family Antiquity gives the early ancestry of the Jennings, Jennyns, Jennens line. He says the Jennings were first in Yorkshire and were original Saxons there prior to the Conquest. Their lands were not confiscated by William the Conqueror. (See Dougdale, Playfair's British Family History etc.
p. 146. In Yorkshire we find in the 16th centruy Peter Jennens on his manor at hebden Bridg b. ca. 1550. By Agnes ___ he had son William bapt. at H.B. Yorks 23 May 1577.

John was bapt at Kilnwick 28 Oct. 1602; Robert bp. 13 Dec. 1607; Ambrose b. K. ca. 1610, d. London 1667, bur. St. Martin's 17 Feb. 1667; Mary b. at K. ca. 1615 d. London bur. III. John Jennings p. 146 of Kilnwick Parish, Yorks. bapt. 28 Oct. 1602, rem. Birmingham were he d. May 31, 1662, and was buried at St. Martin's, will rp. 10 Mar. 1663. John in 1651 gave L 2 10 s for poor of Birmingham and L 20 on St. Thomas' Day; wife gave L 10 s per annum to support a lecture. The warehouse of Jennings was formerly 26 High St. St. Bartholomew Chapel, Birmingham, built 1749, of 800 hearers, had its land given by John Jennings Esq.. of Gopsall, Leicestershire possessed of an estate in the near Birmingham. Mrs. Jennings gave L 1,000 to the chapel. John was stated to have resided at Halee-Owen in Shropshire but originally of Yorkshire. "This family is among the many of ample fortune at Birmingham" where they "were equally famous for industry and generosity." "He was m. 11th June 1621 to Anne (or Joyce) Smith (who was buried 24 Apr. 1669), by whom he had 8 children: 1. Dorrity bp. 23 May 1623: Ester, Humphry bp. 1629, Abraham, Joseph bp 16 Oct. 1631 bur. St. Martin's Birmingham 1658, and wife; Sarah; Edward bpt. 1658 (had son John bp. 31 July 1664); John bp. 19 Apr. 1640 (had 2 children John bp. 15 Jan. 1664, Mary bp. 28 Aug. 1669.

There is uncertainty and some disagreement among those interested regarding a relationship between the John and Nicholas Jennings of Hartford and Southampton, Conn., and the Joshua Jennings who finally settled in Fairfield, Conn. In studying the problem, we find many references to a John Jennings in the early Hartford, Conn., records, but most of them fail to make clear whether father or son is meant. The following quotations from these records, however, make certain there was an elder John Jennings who was father of Nicholas Jennings, at least.
It is believed from family traditions that the elder John Jennings died soon after 1640, yet references to John Jennings continue frequently, and doubtlessly many of them are to a younger John - a son of the John above-for HOTTEN. 1874, gives the "Original List of passengers from 1600 to 1700".
"Nicholas Jennings, age 22, 1634, Passage, Francis of Ipswich. John Jennings, age 18, 1635. Passage ---------------."
These two names were so often associated together that it has been assumed that the two men were brothers. Evidence suggesting that Joshua was also a brother is found in "History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield, vol. I." compiled by The Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter. Daughters of the American Revolution."

Joshua, a carpenter, was in Wethersfield, CO, 1646, where he was employed in the bldg. of the meeting ho. - and perhaps earlier. In Jan., 1648/49 was paid 20s for "setting up the minister's desk" and 6 pound for other. His wife Mary (perhaps a dau. of Mathew) --- ("History of Ancient Wethersfield" - Vol 1, Conn. State Library - Hartford)
This is a letter that was copied from the Jenning's file at the Hartford Historical Society on 3/3/95.
"I. JOSHUA JENNINGS. An early settler of Hartford; fined for a trivial offense, he left Hartford in 1650 and settled in Fairfield. Married at Hartford 22 Dec. 1647 Mary Williams. She m. (2) at Fairfield, 16 Dec. 1680, George Slawson of Stamford; with whom she made a marriage covenant dated 18 Nov. 1680. Will 25 Feb. 1674/5; to son Joshua, my carpenter, joiner, wheelwright and turning tools; to rest of my sons, JOSEPH, MICHAEL, JOHN, SAMUEL, MATTHEW and ISAAC," etc. (Jecobus.) Will of Mary Slawson 27 Mar. 1697; sons Matthew, Isaac ...dau.-in-law Hannah Jennings; son Joseph Jennings," etc. Ibid. 1943 Correction by Jacobus, p. 20 states: Joshua m. 23 (not 22) Dec. 1647, and gives line of Nehemiah Jennings of Weston.
A General History of the Jennings Family, by W.H. Jennings, Columbus, O. 1899, says: Joshua was b. about 1620 in England, d. 1675 Fairfield, Conn. He was found in Hartford eleven years after its founding, and left in 1650 by ship with his wife, going to Fairfield to Barlow's Plain, where he owned the Jennings Farm or Woods in West Parish, Fairfield, later called Greenfield Farms, a place composed largely of Jennings descendants.
The History of Fairfield, E.H. Schenck, 1889, p. 383, says: "Joshua Jenning's name appears at Hartford in 1648. 'At a particular Court held at Hartford 6 Sept. 1649, 'Joshua Jennings for not watching one night & other ill carriage to the Constable, is to pay to the watchman in his room, & is fined 2s 6d.' On the 3d of Nov. 1650 he again fell under the displeasure of the Court. It appears that he fled on board a ship lying in the Connecticut river from the fine imposed upon him, for which the Court fined Greenfell Lerreby 5L and Stephen Daniels for conveying him from the power of authority..He settled at Fairfield before 1656, where he always maintained an excellent reputat6ion. He lived at Barlow's Plain, and died leaving a good estate. ' His son Joshua settled at Green's Farms." Above shows that Joshua was a stiff-necked Puritan who could not be coerced and would rather leave his home than submit to a fine he objected to. See also Jennings Genealogy by Francis A. Schenck continues: "The heirs of Joshua Jennings for many years made fruitless efforts to establish a lawful claim to the vast estate of William Jennings of Action Plact, born in 1701, who d. 29 June 1798, leaving estates in eleven counties in England and millions in pounds sterling in nearly all the banks of London...The property of this rich William Jennings was claimed in part by the Baroness Howe, a daughter of the celebrated Admiral Howe, through a claim of intermarriage with the Jennings family with that of Curzens. The Earl Beuchamp or Becham also claimed heirship. Some clue in this way may be given to Robert Beacham or Beauchamp of early Greens Farms. This William Jennings was the only child of Robert Jennens and Ann...He was also a nephew of Sarah Jennings, a maid of honor and the favorite of Queen Ann, who married the great Duke of Marlborough."
On this subject, there is a printed "Report to the Jennings Association, U.S.A." by C. Smith and C.M. Fisher, in 1863 on the litigation involved. The reprot said the ancestry of Joshua could not be traced to England. It shows the Jennings coat of arms and has much genealogy and history on the Jennings of England, all important and wealthy people. (P. 18.) E.C. Hoagland, 1955, did "Some P rief Notes on the Jennings Family, " stating the name Jennings is the same as Jenkins and comes from Jenks. This refers to Joshua and the claim to the English estate of William J. of Acton Place. It says the parents of Mary Williams is unknown.
I looked up Stiles' Genealogy and Biographies of Ancient Wethersfield, VII, section on Williams. It says the first in Wehtersfield was Matthew and later Tomas came, the relation between them being unknown. P. 823 says Mathew Williams b. ca. 1605 in Wales, was supposed the eldest son of Richard Williams, who came from Glamorgan, Wales, with family 1620-21, claiming to be kin of Oliver Cromwell, which Richard also claimed, of Taunton, Mass. Richard Williams of Tauntonwas supposed to be father of Mathew and must be the one who m. Katherine Dighton, 2d wife of Gov. Thomas Dudley of Massachusetts. Mathew seems to have been at Watertown and came to Wethersfield, perhaps one of the 7 founders of Wethersfield before 1645. He had m. Susanna ______ previous to 1644, perhaps sister of James Cole. Children: only boys listed, Amos b. 1645-6 etc. There may be daughters. Thomas may be a brother of Mathew, who was in the Rocky Hill dist. 1661 and had grant on the river; also settled Branford. Children include MARY b. 1671 etc. (This could not be the wife of Joshua Jennings.)
Stiles' says Richard of Taunton perhaps had seven sons, though the records shows only four and 2 daus. Elizabeth and Hannah. P.460 says: "Jennings, Joshua, a joiner WT V1, 25, 20 Apl. 1647, his wife was Mary (perhaps a daughter of MATTHEW WILLIAMS) m. 23 Dec. 1647, removed to Fairfield. See Chapt. VII, also p.220, V.1, P.220. Joshua built the seats in the meeting house in Wethersfield and there is much information on this contract. Thomas Williams p. 314 was believed one of the earliest settlers at Rocky Hill with Joseph Smith as neighbor.
Jacobus p. 694, V.1. had: "Williams, Richard. One of the first settlers of Branford, 1645. He purchased land at Fairfield before 11 Aug. 1656...In 1677 he was living in New London County." He gives another p. 695: "WILLIAMS, THOMAS. Of Fairfield 1678, when with Thomas Jones he was fined for selling liquor to the Indians. He m. Ruth Bradley, dau. of Francis, "desc. given p. 1044.

The fact that Joshua Jennings and Mary Williams named a son Mathew may indicate a grandfather named Mathew Williams. Other children were Joseph, Mary m. Curtis, Samuel, John, Isaac b. abt. 1673, Elizabeth m. John Smith.
"HENDRICK, HENRY. A Dutchman, also called Hendrick Hendrickson, entered land at Fairfield, 31 Jan. 1655/6, previously purchased of William Hill. His wife Hannica also called Hannah m. (2) Daniel Silliman. Will 11 Mar. 1683/4 pr. 18 June 1684; wife Hannica alias Hannah, house for life...son Henrick, the home lot etc. Inv. 31 May 1684. "Henry was only son listed. (Jacobus p. 270.)
There is tradition in all the branches of the (Johsua) family that he, Joshua Jennings, came from England, Norfolk, Eng., with two brothers whose names they do not know.
That Joshua was a Saybrook at the mouth of the Conn river, before he came to Fairfield, and that his son, Joseph, was born at Saybrook, bet 1650-1660. Also the tradition is that one brother settled in Fairfield, Conn and on other in some part of the new England States, one in New Jersey or Long Island.
Extract of a letter dated Dec. 30, 1835 from the town clerk at Saytbrook, Conn. "it appears that Nicholas Jennings conveyed three or four pieces of land to John Say, and a dwelling house, Oct 28, 1661. It appears that Nicholas Jennings in the same (1661) year, at Saybrook, conveyed land, and that Joshua Jennings had land conveyed to him in the town of Fairfield.
As to the ages of the three brothers, Nicholas, John & Joshua.
Nicholas, born abt 1612 (22 in 1634); died 1673 at Saybrook, Conn.
John, born abt 1617 (18 in 1635); died 1675, Southampton, L.I., NY
Johsua, born abt 1620 (15 in 1635); died 1675, at Fairfield, Conn.
We do not know the name of the boat in which Joshua or John came over in, nor the father, John, but he would indicate that they could have been brothers, and that prob. Joshua and prob John came over with the father, John, while Nicholas, the eldest, came over in 1634, before the others, in 1635.
They all four, were in Hartford between 1630-49, as Joshua's family say, and in 1639 as John and Nicholas's record say, as they came over in 1635 & 1634 respectfully.
The record that there was a father, we have the following (where John sold upland over the long hill which he bought of Peter Boniface and he bought it of Nicholas Ginnings and was his father's, John Genning, his land contain by estimate five acres be it more or less".
Another tradition in the Johsua Jenning family:
That Joshua was a son of John Jennings, one of the proprietors of Hartford, Conn, "whose home lot in 1639, was on the brow of the hill, now Asylum Hill". It is thought that this, John, died not long after 1640.
From the Memorial History of Hartford, Conn, Vol.1 page 2301 we have:
Joshua Jennings, bought land in Hartford of Thomas Olcott, which was the west protion of Olcott's home lot, He was also owner of another piece of land with a house part of which he bought of Olcott, "abitting on the meeting house lot on the eastside of the highway on the south; and on Thomas Olcott's land on the west and north".
The brother, Nicholas who came over in 1634, in the "Francis of Ipswich", was 22 yrs of age, and removed to Saybrook, Conn. where in Oct. 1673, administration on his estate was given to son, John., we find "Jennings, Nicholas, Hartford, 1639, and Jennings, John, Hartforde, 1639. They were both in 1639, who were all prob. settlers in the town at that time.
We also find that John's gr. grandson was named Nicholas, Prob. after his brother Nicholas.
From "Original List of Passingers", 1600 to 1700, edited by Hotten, 1874, p. 141, we find:

American Family Antiquity by Albert Welles does not exactly correspond with the other authorities. II. Joseph Jennings. He does not have Ann bapt 12 Mar. 1703/4 m. 4 Nov. 1734, Joseph Hollingsworth (p. 160, see p. 334 Jocobus.)
JOSEPH JENNINGS, son of Joseph, d. 1768. Welles gives 7 children. He leaves out Benjamin who d. y and Abigail who d.y. and Abigail who d. y but adds a youngest child Sarah b. Fairfield ca. 1720 or later. He says Gershom was b. ca. 1707.

P. 566 of Jacobus Lists these same children but different dates as ch. of Gershom son of Daniel. Gershom bp. 1738 at Greenfield. d. 1809, m. (1) 1762 Rhoda Sanford, d. of Zechariah b. 1742/3 d. 1802. Welkes has this generation confused. It was Daniel b. abt. 1770; Greenfield d. 1845 who m. Phebe Gregory d. of Enoch who d. 1856 ae. 79.

was born Fairfield 1732 and had ten children, these are listed above, incl. Rhoda b. ca. 1767. p. 192. Welles had pix on p. 184 of the old Jennings house in Fairfield.

St. Martin's 28 Dec. 1670; Agnes Jennings ca. 1618 buried St. Martin's 4 Mar. 1668.
JOHN JENNINGS, p. 146 of Kilnwick Parish, Yorks. bapt. 28 Oct 1602, rem. Birmingham where he d. May 31, 1662, and was buried at St. Martin's, will rp. 10 Mar. 1663. John in 1651 gave L 2 10s for poor of Birmingham and L20 on St. Thomas' Day; wife gave L 10 per annum to support a lecture. The warehouse of Jennings was formerly 26 High St. St. Bartholomew Chapel, Birmingham, built 1749, Had it's land given by John Jennings Esq. of Gopsall, Leicestershire.

"Jennings, Joshua. An early settler of Hartford; fined for a trivial offense, he left Hartford in 1650 and settled in Fairfield. Married at Hartford, Dec. 22, 1647, Mary Williams.
From correspondenc with some members of the Jennings families of Fairfield, Conn., giving incormation furnished by George P. Jennings and others, we find that they have the following tradition in all branches of their family: That their ancestor, Joshua Jennings, was born in England about 1620; came to America before 1640; that on Dec 22, 1647, in Hartford; that he came from England with two brothers, whose names they do not know; that one brother settled in some part of New England states, another in Va., N. J., or Long Island, while Joshua finally settled in Fairfield, Conn. We are also told that Joshua lived for sometime at Saybrook, Conn., (where Nicholas also lived and died) and that his son Joseph was born there between 1650 and 1660.
It would appear, then, that the senior JOHN JENNINGS of Hartford is the one who is first mention as being there in 1639; that he was doubtless "One of the Proprietors of Hartford, Conn."- whose home was on the brow of the hill, now Asylum Hill"... "contained by estimate 2 acres be it more or less." That he had sons Nicholas (eldest) of Saybrook, Conn., John of Southampton (having embarked from Lynn, Mass.), and Joshua of Fairfield, Conn., and that these were the three brothers of the traditions held by the Joshua Jennings families.
Further corroboration of these assumptions was furnished in THE TRAVELER, of April 12, 1912, L. I., Note 1060. M.H.C., (Metta Horton Cook); "John Jennings came from Suffolk Co9., Eng., in 1639 and settled in Lee, Mass. He resided in Hartford, Conn., in 1657 and was on the list of inhabitants at Southampton, L.I., the same year." And we find in the HISTORY OF LONG ISLAND by Benj. Thompson, in 1843, p 328: "Town of Southampton: Then names of the settlers who had arrived during the first twelve months. March 10, 1640. They embarked from Lynn, Mass., John Jennings, Benj. Haines," and others. (The name "Lee" of the "M.H.C." note above might have been misprinted for "Lynn, as Lee, Mass., is far away in the western part of the state among the Berkshire Hills while Lynn is on the coast--L.P.W.)
We may be in error in these assumptions and conclusions, altho they seem reasonable in the light of available records. We make no claim of absolute proof but give them for what they are worth. The reader is welcome to his own opinion on the subject.

Joshua Jennings (Josua Ginings or Gennings) was born in 1620, England and came to America between 1630-1640. No record of his birth or of his parentage has ever been found. Joshua merried Mary Williams in Hartford, Connecticut December 22, 1647. After Joshua was fined for a trivial offense, he left Hartford by ship in 1650 and settled in Fairfield Connecticut. He died there in 1675. He was a landowner and carpenter. It was noted that he was intelligent, industrious and maintained an excellent reputation.
*note: In 1798, a William Jennings of Arton Place, England died without a signed will. His estate amounted to an estimated 100 millian of dollars in pounds sterling. The many member Jennings family of Fairfield, CT formed an association that tried deligently to prove their first of line Joshua Jennings relationship to William. However, no record of Joshua's birth or of his parentage has ever been found. (same source as above)

He was of age in 1685 according to his father's will.
John was married and had seven sons. Whom and when these sons married is not known, nor exactly where or when they landed in our country, but there is a tradition that the seven sons of John Jennings left Eastern Connecticut or Long Island in 1726 on the "Old Caledonia". The ship was wrecked off the coast of New Jersey and the party became scattered. The sons, Zebulon, Jacob, and Benjamin, reached New Jersey; Joseph, Jonathan, and John reached Long Island; while David has been missing ever since.

William Jennings son of Lieut. Wm., married in Long Island but during or soon after the Battle of Long Island, Aug. 27, 1776, he left there and moved to Connecticut or parts unknown. As nothing more has been heard of him, we will be compelled to leave to future generations the discovery of his last place of abode.

Zachariah 1st lived in Connecticut. Of his children, the ones who came to New York State about the time of the Revolution, were Edmund, Justus and Seth. They settled in the "District of Ballston", Saratoga Co. in Rev. Eliphalit Ballo Congregation.
Also three of Zachariah 2nd sons located in Ballston at about the same time. They were - Nathaniel, Israil and Cornelius. (At the same time a large number of the Jennings family started for the Northwest territory - Ohio and Indiana - one of them was Jonathan Jennings. He became the first Gov. of Indiana, after William H Harrison the war governor, and was, also, the first representative in Congress, at Washington DC).
A William J Jennings is in the list of Volunteers from Ballston Spa, for the war of the Rebellions.
Justus, 1820, applied for government pension. He enlisted at Fairfield, Conn in 1778. Served on the Conn line, and in 1778 was at the city of Philadelphia. Was at White Plains, Frenton, Princeton and Monmouth. In 1820 had a wife and five children, but no real (estate) property as he had sold his small farm, and lost purchase money by the purchase failing.

Note by H.F.S. There is a possibility that Rhoda Sanford and Gershom Jennings had a daughter named Rhoda not listed by Jaccbus. Jacobus wrote to me that many names were missing and some births not even registered etc.

Jacobus does not carry on the line of Gershom, p. 533, son of Joseph. W.H. Jennings in his genealogy has got this Gershom confused with Gershom, son of Daniel, bapt. 1738, at Greenfield, who m. Rhoda Sanford 1762. On p. 546 Jacobus has this line of Gershom b. 1738 at Greenfield m. Rhoda, dau. of Zechariah Sanford ch. Abigail, Ruth, Eunice, Daniel, Hannah, Michal, Gershom b. 1779. This Gershom was grandson of Matthew.
The correct line is given by all three authorities up to Gershom, son of Joseph3, but W.H. Jennings has one generation off for Daniel, son of Gershom. The correct line is in American Family Antiquity, V. IV, by Albert Welles, p. 181 a beautiful full volume on the "Jennings" family. He gives the line as Joshua 1, Joseph 2, Joseph 3, Gershom 4, Daniel 5, Rhoda 6. Welles list Daniel 5 as first son of Gershom Jennings, and b. 1732.
IV. Gershom, b. 16 Jan. 1710, perhaps d. in 1788 (Jacobus), had as first child Daniel B. 1732. (Welles.) The wife is not given.

Came from Fairfield Conn. and settled in Ballston, Saratoga Co. NY just after the Revolutionary War.
Settled on the first farm North of Hop City. His son Joseph kept the Milton House in Ballston Spa all his life and died there aged upwards of 90 years. Then his cousin Hiram Jennings kept it till it burned down. Joseph Jennings' granddaughter now lives in the house built on the site. Joseph Jennings was Sheriff of the County. He hung the only two men hung in Saratoga County.
From Gross', "Centennial History of Ballston Spa" - "The first written record of Edmund Jennings, Town of Ballston record of 29th of December 1778 - from Town of Ballston Town Meeting Book - 'Edmund Jennings takes the mark of Andrew Mitchel, Esq. (followed by description of the ear mark for stock)."
Also, from the same source: "Edmund Jennings and Joseph Morehouse were in the group of men, mostly from Connecticut, who followed Rev. Eliphalet Ball, a Congregational clergyman of Bedford in Westchester County, inhabitants from the adjoining town of Stamford, Conn. The settlers came from 1770 - 1775. They settled around him in Ballston, locating along the road known as "Middle Line", and some on the east side of the lake (Long Lake, now called Ballston Lake).
"Rev. Eliphalet Ball came to Ballston from Bedford, Westchester County, Conn. about 1770. He had a log cabin (on Christopher Appel farm). His daughter Mary Bell married General James Gordon (Fred West Place, nearly opposite Dist. #4 school house, Middle Line Road).
Edmund Jennings enlisted from Ballston. He was one to help organize the Christ Episcopal Church of Ballston in 1787. In 1791, a building was built south of Ballston Center by the members of the organization.

J. - 7A (New England Journal?) provided by Chester A Jennings: "Captain Edmund Jennings and Captain Howe were leaders of the Ballston citizens that pursued after the Canadians and Indians when they made a raid upon the town (Balls town) and took General Gordon and family prisoners to Canada. The General Gordon lived on the farm on Middle Line road adjoining William Sherwood farm (owned by Smiths, the Quackenbush's - opposite the school house in Dist. #4 town of Ballston)."

Edmund Jennings settled in Ballston in 1775 at the age of 21. He was the son of Zachariah and Sarah Morehouse Jennings from Fairfield, Conn. He built a log cabin on the his behind this house. The cabin was later moved the present site (note the attic of the garage with barked logs still in place!). Edmund and his wife, Betsey, were the parents of sons-Elisha, Samuel, Abraham and Joseph and three daughters, Betsey Seeley, Sarah Jennings and Charity Cole, all born in this house. Joseph became the sheriff in Ballston Spa and prepared several convicts for execution. He even saved the rope used for hangings!
Edmund Jennings, unlike some of his neighbors, sided with the rebels during the Revolutionary War. He was a member of the 12th Regiment of the Albany County Militia (Saratoga County was not formed until 1791). In May of 1777, he joined a search party, which was after fifteen tories. Along with Colonel James Gordon, the militilamen chased the lovalists up the Sacandaga River and captured them at Lake Luzern. The captives were taken to the Albany goal, which was already over-crowded with tory prisoners. Edmund Jennings, no doubt, tought at Bemis Heights and witnessed the surrenders of Burgoyne. Captain Edmund Jennings pursued the British and Indians when they raided Ballston in 1780.
Typically, this house was constructed in three stages, the first being the log cabin and present summer kitchen. The second was what is now the family room and kitchen. Then the front portion was built in 1820. The brick walls are eighteen inches thick! (Note the limestone slab over the front door and the smoke house in the yard).
The Jennings family planted a huge orchard-remnants of it remain today. When the Court House was built on Middle Line Road in 1796, Edmund Jennings furnished the lumber. He was an organizer of the Christ Episcopal Church in 1787.
Edmund Jennings died on March 28, 1838 aged 84, and his wife died 1842 aged 87. They are buried in the Hubbell cemetery on Hop City Road.
The property then transferred to the Spears', another of the founding families of Ballston. Scotchmen, such as Spears, Shearers, McDearmids and Frazure settled in the northwest part of town, hence the name Scotchbush Road. Hop City Road is named for the hop mill run by the Scotchmen.
As early as 1784, Robert Spears served as a pathmaster for Ballston. John B. Spears Moved his family to the Jennings house.

a farm laborer and a domestic servant.
The children attended school district #5, which was just south of their home. In 1852, their father died. The property was then referred to as "The Widow Spears." In 1862, Widow Spears was taxed for 187 acres worth $4,500.
Traditon has it that this house was part of the Underground Railroad, hence the bars on every basement window. This is plausible as the escaping slaves had to be locked in during the day. Natrually, they were frightened. If they bolted and ran in the daylight, the home owner would be discovered, a fate not welcome or legal.
In the 1870's the land was deeded from the Spears family to Eli Bathrick and then to Mabel and Fred Barnes. Old timers remember Fred Barnes living in the house. He was known for never wearing shoes, hanging them around his neck instead. He was also known for his Saturday night, hard cider parties in the basement. The apples for the cider were probably gathered from the ancient Jennings orchard.
Later owners were Robert and Sara Armer. They sold the house to Karl and Zilpha Kirk, the present owners, in 1962. They are the parents of Karl Kirk, Jr. and Julia Kirk Blackwelder. This house is definitely one of Ballston's heritage houses and certainly deserving of the soon to be erected New York State historic marker.

It looks as if Daniel might have been a Revolutionary soldier, who got a land grant for services and took his family away with him. Some of his sons could also have been in the Revolution. Did he go to Wilkes Co., GA.? At this time the cottin gin was being perfected ther by Eli Whitney of Conn. and some Conn. families migrated there

The late Abraham Gould Jennings of Fairfield, Conn. has this to say: He visited in England several times in relation to his silk works in Brooklyn, NY. "The Jennings family is one of the oldest in England. When William the Conqueror ascended the English throne, he confiscated some of the great fiefs of the Anglo Saxon nobles, but did not touch the lands of any of the tenants holding feudally under them. And as the Jennings family were men of peace and plenty, having no desire for political preferment of likiing for the glory gained by civil strife, they remained undisturbed by the great convulsions of the Country which resulted from the conquest of it by William of Normandy.
For six hundred years they remainde among the gentry and Commoners of England. Wealthy, industrious and influential agriculturist and manufacturers-loyal to their country and its rulers, but without ambition for place and preferment. At length in the contest width led to the dethromenment and execution of Charles the First to one branch of the family, that of Cambridgshire in the person of Sir John Jennings and his son Sir Richard Jennings of Sandridge and the daughters of the latter there came the preferment to which they had been so long indifferent. The two handsome daughters of Sir Richard Jennings: Frances La Belle Jennings the Duchess of Tyrconnel, and Sarah Jennings the Duchess of Marlborough who whs the intimate friend and Counsellor of Queen Anne.
Sir Richard Jennings left no male heirs, hence there are none of his descendants now bearing the name of the Jennings. Although there are very many of his family or his fathers and other families of that name. From some of these-our ancestor Joshna Jennings is decended
