John Robert "Jack" Bowen was born in
Warrensburg, Missouri, on December 10, 1874 to William R. Bowen and Lizzie E. Wilson. He
lived in Warrensburg, working on his father's farm, until around the turn of the century
when he took a preemption of land in Cando, North Dakota. He was a bachelor until (at the
age of 30) he married Margaret Clary, a school teacher from Henry County, Missouri who was
teaching school in Cando, ND. Jack and Margaret raised a family of 7 children in Eastern Washington (state). At one time he owned an apple orchard, he also was a school bus driver and a dairy worker, delivering milk via horse and wagon. About 1927 the family moved to Bellingham, WA so that the children could take advantage of the better schools and work opportunities. There Jack owned and operated a parking lot in downtown Bellingham. He died in 1968. This photo was submitted by Margaret. |
