Jabez Bowen graduated from Yale in 1757 and settled in Providence, R I, taking a house beside his father's on Market Square. During the Revolution, he was commmissioned colonel by the General Assembly, 1776, 1st regiment of Providence, R.I., where he was born and died. He was constantly consulted by Generals Spencer, Gates and Sullivan, not only in relation to civic affairs, but also regarding their military operations. When war was declared, he resigned his position on the bench as Chief Justice of the Superior Court and accepted the command of the 1st Regiment of the County of Providence in 1776. In 1778, 1779 and 1780 to 1786, he was elected Deputy Governor of the state of Rhode Island. The Declaration of Independence was read from the front balcony of his house on Market Square. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress, 1778 and was a member of the Convention that adopted the Constitution of the United States at Newport May 20, 1790. Dr. Jabez Bowen was 41 years old when his father, Dr. Richard Bowen died. He had a large medical practice in Rehoboth and nearby Providence, where he moved to the home lot of Roger Williams, a few rods north of St. John's Church at the corner of North Main and Bowen Streets. (Bowen Street was named after Jabez Bowen). The house is still (1942) standing.
