Clifton moved from Bowenton to North Carolina ca. 1738; he received a land grant dated 22 November, 1738. He was a petit juror for court sessions 9 September, 1741 and 9 December, 1741. Clifton Bowen was a planter by occupation. He served in the Revolutionary War as a Lt. in the Duplin County, North Carolina militia. He was honorably discharged in 1781 because of a pulmonary ailment that made him too weak to carry on.spouse: Unknown, Martha (~1740 - <1824)Martha, his widow, applied in Screven County, Georgia for administration of Clifton's estate on August 16, 1794. The citation published in connection with her application stated the deceased was formerly of Effingham County, now Screven County.
Clifton sold his land in North Carolina in 1783 and purchased land in Effingham County, Georgia (this section of the county was later in the new county of Screven) in 1784. His son Mark also had land platted in Effingham County, Georgia in 1784, in April and July.
Clifton died 03 August, 1789 in Bullock Co., GA and was buried in Willmington, NC.
