DANIEL COTTIER

One person of some interest is Daniel Cottier who married Marian Miller Field in 1866. Presumably they met while he was working with Field and Allan on the stained-glass windows of Pilrig Church, Edinburgh - this is his first recorded work.

According to recollections of Robert Field Paterson, which have been passed down through the family, his work - especially as a stained-glass artist - meant that he travelled all over the world. His family went with him, and some of the children were born abroad.

Interest in his decorative work has been renewed in recent years, with the spotlight being turned on Alexander ('Greek') Thomson with whom he collaborated on several projects, and with an increased awareness in Glasgow of the city's architectural heritage.

As well as promoting the decorative arts, both in the USA and Australia, he was an art dealer. By chance I have found a sale catalogue in the local library which was produced for the auction of his art collection, which includes a short biography, and have transcribed some of it.
