Hawaiian Missionaries to Wailuku & Wailuku Union Church on Maui 1832-

This is a list of missionaries sent by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) to the Wailuku area of Maui in Hawaii. By 1850 the Hawaiians had their own ministers and the missionaries were just helping them. In 1866 the caucasian population needed a church in the Wailuku area and the Wailuku Foreign Church was started. It served all protestant denominations but was run primarily by Congregational or Presbyterian ministers and was associated with the Hawaiian Evangelical Association. In 1911 the current stone church building was built and the missionaries asterisked (*) below were memorialized in the stained glass windows.

This page is to encourage the exchange of information about these men and women who brought Christianity to this area. The goal is to establish a biographical outline for each person with a list of educational accomplishments and list of places of service thoughout their life time. Also some information on where they came from and their ancestry. Also a full list of descendants with addresses for those still living. This will assist the church in extending an invitation to their spiritual brethren to attend periodic anniversary celebrations which normally include honoring their leaders of the past.

ABCFM - Annual Reports GTU Library, Berkeley, CA (BV 2360 .A385)
Not all volumes are available.
1824 Mentions Lahinah (note spelling) but not Wailuku.
1826, 1829, 1830 Mentions Lahaina but not Wailuku.
1831 Mentins Lahaina with other occupied stations on Maui being Olualu
(18 miles from Lahaina) and Wailuku (25 miles from Lahaina and well populated)
1832 On 6/1831 resloved to start High School in Lahaina. "A congregation
at Wailuku on the Sabbath usually exceeds 3,000."
1833 Until recently the chiefs have been regarded as something more than
mortal. Still most people treat everything said by a chief as law, not just
as advice. So when the Holy Ghost moved the chiefs to embrace Christianity
their advise to embrace it must have had the force of law. So if told to
attend church or to study, they did so. Cotton grows well in HI, but natives
have no means for making cloth. All cloth comes from abroad. The sandal wood
is gone. Three new stations formed on Maui, Molokai, and Oahu.
Mr. Green at the station in Wailuku, which borders a tract
of country containing 23,000 souls. The head man has made preparation
for building a stone church 188', with a rainai (Lanai), or sort of
native piazza, 40' wide to accomodate 2,000 people. Within last year
there were 1400 Christian marriages in Hawaii, including 441 on Hawaii,
464 on Maui, 384 on Oahu, and 179 on Kauai.
1834 Mr. Green and Tinker at Wailuku. Church statistics as of
