WESTERVELT

WESTERVELT Rev. William D. Westervelt (1849-1939) supposedly (according to the Lyman book below) served Wailuku Union Church in 1890's on Maui. In the list of WUC ministers there are gaps at 1885-1886, 1889-1893 and 1901-1904. Westervelt is not mentioned in the church records. Westervelt's necrology in the 1939 Congregational Year Book has a pastoral service gap during 1889-1892 and that from 1889-1891 he belonged to the ABCFM. The Congregational Year Books for 1889-1891 show him in Honolulu, H.I. in care of A.O.Forbes and he was ordained for service there starting 1889. THE ABCFM was the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missionaries. A.O. Forbes was the Secretary of the Board of the Hawaiian Evangelican Association during 1880-1888. Then Oliver P. Emerson was secretary from 1889-1903. Wailuku, Maui was one of the mission fields of the ABCFM and by th 1880's was under the HEA. It looks like Westervelt may have been on Maui sometime during 1889-1891. From The Lymans of Hawaii Island; A Pioneering Family, 1993, by Publisher Orlando H. Lyman Trust but the author may have been MacKinnon Simmons or possibly Helen Baldwin. via Kathleen T. Choi [[email protected]] p. 83. Talking about Levi Lyman. "After graduating from Oahu College in 1888, he taught at Kamehmeha School for Boys. ... he took a leave of absence in 1890 to attend Pratt Institutte in Brooklyn, New York. He returned to Kamehameha Schools in 1892 .... "About this time, a young lady from La Porte, Indiana arrived to teach at the Maunaolu School for Girls on Maui. Her name was Nettie Hammond, and her cousin, Rev. William D. Westevelt, was pastor of Wailuku Union Church and suggested her for the job. She taught there for a time and then transferred to Kamehameha School for Girls. Although Kamehmeha's Boys and Girls Schools were separate institutions, Levi met Nettie at various functions. .... Their friendship soon fanned into romance, and they married in Honolulu on July 6, 1897, soon after Levi was appointed principal of HBS." From ABCFM Annual Reports 1887 Additional Missionary Work is needed because the veteran missionaries are dying and the natives are not strong enough, by their own judgement. New workers are not to become pastors of churches but help the native pastors. 1888 This effort not mentioned. 1889 Special Work in the Hawaiian Islands includes 1) Additional work with Hawaiians under Rev. & Mrs. W. D. Westervelt of Denver, CO., 2) NPMI under Rev. Hyde, 3) Hilo Boarding School for Boys, under Rev. A.W. Burt, 4) work with the Chinese under Mr. Frank W. Damon Missionary families in Hawaii are Rev. Hyde and Mrs. Mary Knight Hyde and Rev. Westervelt and Mrs. Clara L. Westervelt. 1890 Special Work in the Hawaiian Islands includes Hyde in Honlulu and Westervelt in Wailuku. His wife listed as Mrs. Louise C. Westervelt in one place and Clara L. Westervelt in another. Chinese - Westevelt baptized 2 men in Wailuku. Evangelistic work is being done by Mr. Westervelt who is now studying the language. His residence is in Wailuku in the former missionary residence. Services have been conducted in English, Chinese and Japanses and he is helping the pastor of the native church. 1891 Special Work in the Hawaiian Islands Chinese: Mrs. Simpson conducts the mission in Wailuku. During Mr. Westervelt's stay on ground (JRD: grounds?) she had help from him. Evangelistic work by Mr. Westervelt continues in Wailuku. Mrs. Westervelt's health is poor and they resigned and returned to the states. 1892 Special Work in the Hawaiian Islands. Westervelt withdraws. From Wailuku Union Church records No record of this minister. From Genealogy of the Westervelt Family, year?, Walter Tallmsn Westervelt via D. Westervelt was on the first committee of management for the Nuuanu Branch and secretary for the first few weeks. p.63 On May 7, 1922 Dr. W. D. In 1937, the National Council asked for Mr. Killam's release from the Honolulu work to become executive secretary of its committee on pioneer fields. Frank C. Atherton and Dr. W.D. Westervelt offered to share in the financial support of this work for Negros, Mexicans, American Indians and various foreign groups." p.98 Probably about 1928, "The Rev. W.D. Killam, Dr. Iga Mori, Dr. Syngman Rhee, and William D. Westervelt.
