From Willam Penn College Greetings to Mr. James Davis, The Admissions Office forwarded your message to the our office, Academic Dean's Office. We keep records of former and current faculty but our records do not go back that far here in our office. I checked with the Registrar's Office as they have some records that they keep in their office. We found an Arthur W. Jones, Professor of Latin. He was listed in the 1980-91 and 1892-93 catalogs. Quakers first arrived in Mahaska County in 1843. Near Oskaloosa, the Thorndyke Boarding School was opened by 1855 and planning for Penn Academy was underway by 1860. The Spring Creek Meeting formed the Spring Creek College Association in 1864 with the intent of setting the legal groundwork for establishing a college. Construction of a building begain in 1872, and classes were held in an incomplete structure replete with heating and space problems in 1873. During the first years, students from Penn Academy and Penn College frequently took classes together. The original Main Building burned in 1916, and Penn College was rebuilt on its current site. Two men died trying to save records from this fire.
