The freeing of the slaves
In the sixth month of 1793, Abijah O'Neall and his brothers-in-law, Samuel and Robert Kelly, manumitted (freed) slaves which they had inherited from Abijah's father-in-law, John Kelly. This was recorded officially the following year, in May of 1794. This document, shown below the citation, has been conserved in the South Carolina Archives, in Deed Book B, Entries 794-795, Newberry County:
[Page 1] South Carolina Newberry County Know all Men by These Presents that we Saml Kelly, & Abijah Oneal, John & Robert Kelly of the County of the State aforesaid Planters, Heirs in the Estate of John Kelly (dec'd) which Estate consists of some Slaves, which Slaves by Will of Said (Dec'd) were to be divided amongst his heirs, & we the above Named Saml Kelly, Abijah Oneal, John & Robert Kelly, having come into Possesion of our Part thereof, Namely Jeffery a yellow Man of about Forty years of age, with his wife Judith, a black Woman, Supposed to be about that age, and their Son Ben a yellow Man about Twenty Three years Old, one other Old Negro Man & his Wife, Namely Jack & Dinah Each Supposed to be near Sixty years of age, their Son Bill a Black man Twenty Six years Old, also Cloe Daughter of said Jack & Dinah a black Woman aged Twenty eight years with three of her Children Lucy a yellow Girl, Nine years old Past, since the 8th Month last, & dick a black Boy three years Old, Also Ben the youngest Child of said Cloe, these being the Names & ages of our Part & Dividend of Slaves in said (Dec'd) Estate, And we believing that Liberty is the Natural Right of all Mankind this 27th day of the Sixth Month 1793, have manumimis'd, enfran chis'd, & from the bonds of Slavery forever set free, the said Negroes Each and every of them, as above Named, & described, To hold and enjoy Such Ma =numition, and freedom free from any claims of ser =vice by us, or either of us, our heirs Executors, Admi =nistrators, or any other Person or Persons Claiming by through or considering, they that have Arrived to the Number of Years that is Commonally Call'd of age, To hold and enjoy such Manumition from the day of the date hereof, forever. The three Children of Cloe above mentioned to Remain in the Service & Care of their Aforesaid Masters, untill they are of age, from which Time forth & forever to be free as above mentioned & manumited by us. In Witness whereof we the above Named Saml Kelly, Abijah [Page 2] O'Neal, John & Robert Kelly have hereunto set our hands & Seals, at Bush River in the County aforesaid the 27th day of the Sixth Month in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety Three, & the Seventeenth Year of American Independence.
