Descendants of John O'Neall

Generation One

1. JOHN1 O'NEALL was born in 1745 in Christiana, Delaware. He married Grace Frost, daughter of John Frost and Mary Taylor, circa 1766 in Frederick County, Virginia. John Belton O'Neall claims Grace Frost was the sister of Mary, the wife of John's brother William. There is, however, no mention of a Grace Frost in the records of Hopewell Monthly Meeting, of which both Mary Frost and her presumed father, John, were members. According to some sources, John O'Neall married Nancy (--?--) circa 1774 in Craven County, South Carolina. In this version of his life and death, John O'Neall died in 1781 in Union District, South Carolina, killed in a skirmish with Col. Roebuck. His estate was probated on 13 July 1801 in Union County.

He was also known as John O'Neill. He moved with his parents, Hugh O'Neall and Anne Cox, circa 1750 to "the Susquehanna." He moved with his mother, Anne Cox, after Hugh O'Neall's death to Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. He petitioned for a land grant on 13 February 1768 on a small branch of Mudlick Creek, Berkley (now Newberry) County. The petition was for 300 acres. The survey was certified 5 March 1768 adn granted 12 August 1768, with quitrent to commence in 10 years. The memorial was signed by Jno. Caldwell (surveyor) "for the memorialist" on 12 December 1768. He moved c 1768 or 1776 to South Carolina. He petitioned for a land grant on 2 August 1768 on Mudlick Creek, Berkley (now Newberry) County. The petition was for 100 acres. The survey was certified 20 December 1768 and certified by order of council 4 May 1773 The land was granted 9 September 1774, with quitrent to commence in 2 years. The memorial was signed by William O'Neall "for the memorialist" on 21 March 1775 and delivered on 5 May 1775. The name of John O'Neal [sic] appears on land transactions on Mudlick Branch or a small tributary thereof in (old) Berkeley County. Surveys and memorials dated 13 Feb. 1768 and 2 Aug. 1768 were signed "for the memorialist" on 12 Dec. 1768 by Jno. Caldwell and on 21 Mar. 1775 by William O'Neal. John Thornton bound to John O'Neall for "£7000 SC money" to make title to 350 acres on a branch of Mudlick on 10 August 1773 in Newberry County, Ninety Six District. He and Nancy (--?--) moved between 1776 and 1787 from Newberry or Laurens County to Union County, South Carolina. John O'Neall assigned John Thornton's 1773 bond to William O'Neall on 8 June 1776. He entered military service in the British Army. According to John Belton O'Neall, he attained the rank of Captain therein.

Recent research has cast some doubt on this date of death for John O'Neall, suggesting that he may have lived longer and had more children. "John O'Neal" is listed as being in the service of Colonel Thomas Brandons' Regiment "2nd Spartan Rifles" (Patriots) Fairforest, Union County Militia in 1782 in Union County, South Carolina. Various documents between 1789 and 1793 (census, deeds, jury lists, etc.) indicate the presence in Union County, South Carolina, of "John Neal", "John Neel" or "John Neail", living in the same area as Henry "Neail" and Frederick Jones (husband of Mary O'Neall). "John Onail" appeared on the census of 1800 in Union County, South Carolina. He left a will on 2 June 1801 in Union County, South Carolina.
