Descendants of Henry O'Neall

Generation One

1. HENRY1 O'NEALL was born in 1742 in Christiana, Delaware. He married Margaret Chambers. According to John Belton O'Neall, he died circa 1788 in Duval County, Florida, "killed in an attempt to seize an outlaw soon after his removal [from South Carolina to Florida, just after the end of the Revolution]." (The Annals of Newberry).

He changed the spelling of his name to Henry O'Neill. He moved with his parents, Hugh O'Neall and Anne Cox, circa 1750 to "the Susquehanna." He moved with his mother, Anne Cox, after Hugh O'Neall's death to Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. He signed the memorial for the land grant of Hugh O'Neall on 7 October 1766 on Little River branch of Saludy River, Berkely County. He petitioned for a land grant on 5 May 1767 on Beaverdam Branch of Little River, Berkely County, South Carolina. The petition was for 200 acres. The survey was certified 15 May 1767 and certified by order of council 3 February 1768. The land was granted 24 August 1770, with quitrent to commence in 2 years. The memorial was signed 17 September 1770 by Hugh O'Neal and Jno. Caldwell (the surveyor). He petitioned for a land grant on 7 May 1771 on Beaverdam Branch of Little River, Berkely County, South Carolina. The petition was for 150 acres. The survey was certified 20 May 1771 and certified by council 23 January 1774. The land was granted 3 July 1774, with quitrent to commence in 2 years. The memorial was signed on 27 December 1774 by Enoch Pearson (the surveyor) and delivered 5 May 1775 to William O'Neall. He was a witness when John Thornton bound to John O'Neall for "£7000 SC money" to make title to 350 acres on a branch of Mudlick on 10 August 1773 in Newberry County, Ninety Six District. He moved in 1776 to South Carolina. Henry did military service in the British Army during the American Revolution. John Belton O'Neall wrote: "Henry, it is said, after his determination was made, and he had accepted a Major's commission in the British army, passed into Virginia to see his brother James, and proposed, if they should ever meet in battle, that they would treat each other as brothers; but the stern republican would accept no such amnesty; 'in peace, brethren; in war, enemies,' was his reply. Fortunately, they never met in arms." (The Annals of Newberry). He and Margaret Chambers moved circa 1786 to northern Florida . They settled on Lanceford Creek and built a plantation known as New Hope. "Henry and Margaret O'Neill demanded beauty as well as productivity of their new home. They chose well. The site that pleased them best overlooked Lanceford Creek. When the Creek widened into a broad beautiful cove, Henry saw that ground north of the cove was high enough to lie beyond the reach of flood. Here a man could build a dry house, could shelter his wife and children in safety and comfort." (The History of New Hope Plantation). In return for Henry O'Neill's dying to defend Florida against what was then perceived as an invasion from Georgia, the King of Spain granted to his widow, Margaret, "a pension which corresponds to a soldier of Monte Pio ... because of the merit of the deceased O'Neill..." Although he might be criticized for having chosen twice to join the non-American side in a conflict, Henry O'Neill seems to have acted bravely, consistently and honorably in defense of his choices.

Other evidence indicates that there existed two Henry O'Neills in Frederick County, Virginia, around 1740. This evidence suggests the hypothesis that the older Henry O'Neill, who was born in 1724 in Virginia, was the one who married Margaret Chambers and had the children listed above. He would then have been the forebear of the O'Neill line in northeastern Florida. The other Henry O'Neill, who would then have been the son of Hugh and Anne Cox O'Neill, served on the Loyalist side in the Little River Militia. He died on 25 January 1815 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. For further information, consult the page, "Which Henry O'Neill?". Since it isn't 100% clear to me where the truth lies, I will continue the line leading to Florida.

He was appointed Judge of the Territorial Florida District in 1832. When Florida was admitted as a state in 1845, he was appointed Judge of the United States Circuit Court, in which capacity he served until 1861.
