[1] Ann Mitchell was buried on the day Benjamin was baptised, suggesting she died in giving birth to him. A Benjamin Dewhirst was a witness at Horbury on the 2 Dec 1805, to a marriage between John Greenwood of Thornhill, bach, and Ann Appelby, spinster, by Licence. Other witness was a Sarah Greenwood. (I think that Benjamin's eldest son, William Dewhirst, married a Sarah Greenwood in Halifax in 1834). The London Gazette gives notice of Benjamin's bankruptcy in 1827.Benjamin in The Times newspaper on the 23 Oct 1823 as a Bookseller at Retford. The sale of an Auction catalogue available at his premises. In the 1841 census, Benjamin lives with three of his children in East Retford, Nottinghamshire, as a 50 year old widowed Bookseller, suggesting Ann Sheppard must have died between 1829 and 1841. Benjamin Dewhirst was living with his widowed daughter in law, Charlotte Dewhirst, in the 1851 Census in Leamington Priors. He is listed as a 63 year old widowed bookseller, born in Wakefield Yorks. In 1861 his age is given as 79, he is living alone in East Retford, a widowed bookseller and printer, born in Horbury Yorks.

[2] William is listed in 1841 living with wife Sarah Greenwood in Huddersfield and working as a Bookseller - the same occupation as his father. A Sarah Dewhirst is a registered death in the 1Q 1842 (aged 35 according to the National Burial Index), Huddersfield, this is likely the first wife of William, and Sarah may have died in childbirth with her daughter, Louisa. The London Gazette gives notice of William's bankruptcy in 1847. In 1851, William shows up with a new wife, Amelia Wigney, in Lincoln working as a Hotel Keeper. Marriage records show Amelia Wigney as the daughter of William Wigney, Farmer. The marriage was witnessed by Thoms Graves and Mary Dewhirst at Crosland Church in the Parish of Almondbury. By 1861, William is working in Chorlton upon Medlock, Lancashire as Manager of a Printing Office. In 1871 he is still managing the printing office while in 1881 he is listed as an auctioneer's clerk. William died 25 Jun 1884 at 15 Linwood St Greenhays (Chorlton upon Medlock) Lancashire, where Emily also died 5 Sep 1893.

Children with Sarah Greenwood: Charles Brook Dewhirst (b. abt. 1834, Huddersfield, d. Q4 1883 Lincoln); Anne Dewhirst (b. abt. 1837, likely d. bef. 1851, Huddersfield); William Bramley Dewhirst (b. Q4 1839, Huddersfield, d. Q1 1900 Stockport); Louisa Dewhirst (b. Q1 1842 (or 1841), Huddersfield, d. aft. 1851). Children with Amelia (aka Emily): Percy Ross Sheppard Dewhirst (b. Q4 1847, Huddersfield, d. Q1 1910 Chorlton); Arthur Benjamin Dewhirst (b. abt. 1850,Huddersfield, d. Q2 1912 Chorlton); Emily Dewhirst (b. Q1 1851, Lincoln, d. aft. 1893 probably Q4 1930 Manchester); Harry Dewhirst (b. Q2 1852, Lincoln, d. aft. 1861); Tom Dewhirst (b. 18540, Wakefield, d. aft. 1871); Herbert Dewhirst (b. Q3 1860, Manchester, Lancashire, d. aft. 1912).

[3] Emma Dewhirst did not marry but had a long career as Principal of the Ladies School in Leeds, Yorkshire. In 1851, her sisters, Mary Anna and Elizabeth work as music teacher and school cashier respectively, and two nieces, Mary Elizabeth and Anne are pupils.

[4] Charles may have lost his wife in the birth of his son, Charles in Huddersfield, abt. 1842. No records are found for Charles in 1851 or 1861, however another son, William Hughes Dewhirst b. 3Q 1850 and registered as a grandson is found in Salford, Lancs. No indication of the identity of William's mother is known, nor is it known whether Charles had remarried. In 1871, William shows up at age 20 and unmarried on the census as "son" with Charles Sr. and brother Charles, who has married an Annie and has three children: Charles D., Mary L. M., and Harry M. Dewhirst. Charles himself is a Bookseller, his son Charles is an Artist on Glass and William works as a stereotyper. By 1881, two additional children are added to Charles Jr's family: Minnie J and Charles S. Dewhirst.

[5] Thomas also worked as a Bookseller. He and Charlotte had one son, George Robinson Dewhirst, b. 1848 in Leamington, Warwickshire.

[6] By 1841 Frances (Fanny) was employed as a teaching assistant at Saleshurst in Sussex. In 1861, she is teaching at her sister's school in Leeds. By 1871, Fanny has moved on to become Schoolmistress at Headingly with Burnley, Leeds, Yorkshire with her niece Anne working as a governess. In 1881, Fanny is the school principal on St. Michaels Rd. Headingley Cum Burley. Yorkshire, where her niece Anne continues to work as governess.
