    Merkel Family of North America

So far as can be determined, this is the original spelling of the Surname.  The earliest colonist bearing that name was a woman, probably a wife of an English Immigrant to new England in 1698.  Next was my ancestorJohann Friedrich Merkel from Hassloch, Germany who was selected for Governor Hunter's Naval Stores Project and was brought, with 1500 other Palatines to the Colony of New York in 1710.  In the nearly three hundred years since then, descendants have lived in  nearly every state of the United States and nearly every Province of Canada.  Eventually, I hope to have a searchable database for all of the immigrants to the US and Canada bearing any variation of this surname.  Meanwhile, make to with JF.  Next I will be adding a possible relative Jacob of Schoharie Co, NY followed by the Mohawk Merkels (Markell/Merkely/Markley/Maricle) who came from near Karlsrhue (Christopher and Michael) and Switzerland (Heinrich).  Some of my line were Loyalists and some of the Mohawk Merkels were, as well, but records from the period are fuzzy and if they didn't belong to either the Lutheran or Reformed churches, tracing their births and marriages is quite difficult.  Please write me if you have corrections or additons to this page.
