John Prior Stotesbury's 1788 marriage to Margaret McCreath in Hyde Co., NC is the first appearance of his name in this area. Just when he migrated from County Kilkenny, Ireland is unknown. It is also known if he and his family were connected in any way to the John Stuchbury / Stuckbury who had lived in the Beaufort / Hyde County area from the 1720s to the 1760s.

Term 1790 : Hyde County in the State of North Carolina: this may certify to all Christian people whom it may Concern that on the tenth day of December in the Year 1788 I celebrated the rite of Matrimony according to the established protesdant (sic) mode or Church of Greate Britrain & the Laws of North Carolina Between JOHN STOKESBERRY & MARGARET McCRAITH both of the antient Kingdom of Ireland in presents of the audience. Witness my hand Benjn. Russell. Witnesses: William Rhodes, John Russell, James Rhodes.


[52] folio 51 - Feb. Term 1791 : A deed from Benjamin Rogers to JOHN B. (P.) STOKSBERRY for 100 acres of land was proved in Court by the oath of Wm. Satterthwat (Satterthewaite) and Evidence thereto; Let it be Registered.


[86] - May Term 1792 : A bill of Sale from Abram Wilkinson to JNO. PRYON STOKSBERRY was proved by the oath of Wm. Satterthwait and Evidence thereto &c. &c. &c. &c.


[100] - Nov. Term 1792 : A deed James Wilkinson to J. P. STOCKSBERRY was proved by the oath of Wm. Satterthwait and Evidence thereto Let be Registered.


[131]-139 - Aug. Term 1793 : A deed James Wilkinson & Frederick Wilkinson to Richard Jordan for 100 acres of Land was proved by the oath of JOHN PRYN STOTSBERY and Evidence thereto.


[133]-140 - Nov. Term 1793 On motion the Court granted and order for Mr. JOHN P. STOTESBERREY to keep a Publick Ferrey from the Loghouse Landing to James Wilkinsons marsh to the Publick Road Who entered into bond of five hundred pounds with Stephen Smith & Daniel Latham his securitys for the faithful Performance of keeping said ferrey the afsd. Ferrey is rated as follows: single man Eight pence, man & horse one Shilling, Carriage of any kind two shillings, ordered to be recorded.

On motion Edward McSwain be appointed adm. On the Estate of John Phillops Deceased Who entered into a bond of two hundred pound with JOHN P. STOTESBERY & George Devenport his securitys the administrator qualified & returned and Inventory & the Court order that the adm. Sell the personal estate of said Decd.
