Major James Augustus Weston

6 May 1838 Lake Comfort - Dec. 1905 Shelby, Cleveland Co., N.C.

When the Hyde Co. census was taken on August 16, 1850 (Middleton), James A. Weston, whose father had died 10 years earlier, was living in the home of John Swindell and listed as age 12. James Augustus Weston was the son of Samuel E. Weston and Diana Bartee Watson. He was commissioned September 9, 1862 in Hyde County as 1st Lieutenant in Company F, 33rd Regiment and was promoted to Captain on August 5, 1862. He was wounded at Jerico Ford. After the war he studied in Theological Seminary at Alexandria, Virginia and was ordained a deacon in 1870; priesthood, 1876. He was a minister at churches in Herford, Raleigh, and Hickory. He died of Bright's Disease in Cleveland Co., North Carolina His funeral was held at the Church of the Ascension in Hickory, North Carolina, and he was buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
