"The Census Taker" (1870)

The 1820 census, with a census day the first Monday of August and a six-months enumeration period, presented enumerators with an unusual problem. Its third column for free white males was headed "between 16 and 18"; its fourth column "of 16 and under 26." Many enumerators marked a seventeen-year old in both categories; others treated the fourth column as "of 18 and under 26." Researchers must study the schedule itself, comparing totals from lines and columns, to determine the usage in an entry of interest.
Our headings are somewhat different from the original schedule in that we left out three columns entitled: 1) Number of Persons Engaged in Agriculture 2) Number of Persons Engaged in Commerce and 3) Number of Persons Engaged in Manufacturing. This was done so everything could be included on one line across the page rather than having to scroll across several screens horizontally to get the information. Foreigners not Naturalized column was also moved to the next to last column rather than having it in the middle of the page as it was on the original. Every other line was shaded so you will be somewhat less likely to lose your place on the page. The original 1820 census had given names written first, then the surname. The surname have been placed first and highlighting it in red for easier searching. No attempt was made to correct mistakes in the spelling of the names so you should look for all conceivable variations of the surnames. This 1820 Beaufort County census was enumerated by James K. Hoyle. No townships were given. This census was abstracted from mircocopy pages which were taken from Microfilm Series: M33; Roll: #82 Pages: 2 - 46 from the National Archives in Washington, DC. The population of Beaufort County in 1820 was 10, 894.
