Joseph McGOWEN, Jr. was born in Tyrrell Co., NC ca. 1769 and moved with his parents just to the south in 1782 to Heron Bay on Mattamuskeet Lake in Hyde Co., NC. Joseph McGOWEN, Sr. died there ca. 1801. On Feb. 18, 1804, Joseph, Jr. purchased 50 acres on the South West Bay (Heron Bay) on South side of Mattamuskeet Lake from Thomas BRIDGMAN for 150 Pounds. (Hyde Co., NC Bk. M, p. 369) On Mar. 8, 1819, Joseph McGOWEN, Jr. sold that 50 acres to Samuel TOPPING for $1,575 and shortly thereafter moved his family from Hyde Co., NC to White Co., TN. (Hyde Co., NC Bk. S, p. 114) On July 21, 1819, Joseph McGOWEN, Jr. purchased 200 acres from Harrison HOLLAND for $1200 (White Co., TN Bk. F, p. 379) on the waters of the Caney Fork. On Oct. 8, 1832, Joseph gave part of his 200 acre farm to his two eldest sons; 50 acres to Amos (White Co., TN Bk. L, p. 391) and 90 acres to James (White Co., TN Bk. L, p. 392). What became of the remaining 60 acres is unknown. James McGOWEN died in White Co., TN in 1840 and his brother Amos served as Administrator. Amos had sold his 50 acres to David CLARK in 1839 (White Co., TN Bk L, p. 429) and moved West after 1843. It is believed that Joseph McGOWEN, Jr. died in White County between 1850 and 1860.

This Indenture riten (?) this 21 day of July in the year of our Lord One Thousand eight hundred and nineteen Between Harrison HOLLAND of the one part and Joseph McGOWEN of the other part, both of the county and state aforesaid, Wittness that I, Harrison HOLLAND, for and in consideration of the sume of Twelve hundred dollars to me in hand paid by the said Joseph McGOWEN before the seizing (?) and delivery of these present the receipt hereof I do hereby acknowledge what I Harrison HOLLAND have bargained and sold unto Joseph McGOWEN and by these presents Do bargain sell convey and confirm unto the said Joseph McGOWEN two hundred acres of land lying and being in White County, and in the first district, and on the waters of the Caney Fork. Beginning at a dogwood and white oak, running West two hundred and six and two thirds poles to a Spanish oak , thence north one hundred and fifty five poles to a black oak and post oak, thence East two hundred and six and two thirds poles to a black oak and post oak, thence South to the Beginning. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land, with its appurtenances to the said Joseph McGOWEN and his heirs and assigns forever. And the said Harrison HOLLAND Do warrant and forever defend the said tract or parcel of land unto the said McGOWEN his heirs Executors, administrators or assigns from me my heirs administrators and assigns forever With all the rights and privileges their unto belonging, in the confirmation thereof I the said Harrison HOLLAND Do sit my hand and fix my seal this day and year above riten Signed Sealed and delivered in present of us

Oct. 8, 1832 - JOSEPH McGOWN to JAMES McGOWN; in consideration of the natural love and affection which JOSEPH McGOWN hath and beareth unto the said James McGown, and also for the better maintenance and support of the said JAMES McGOWN doth give, grant, etc., unto the said JAMES McGOWN his heirs and assigns all that tract and parcel of land Lying in the County of White and State of Tennessee in the first district on the waters of the Caney Fork beginning at a black oak and post oak running East one hundred fifty four and two thirds poles to a post oak then South sixty two and a half poles to a stake thence West one hundred and fifty four and two thirds poles to a black oak thence North sixty two and a half poles to the beginning, containing Sixty acres also Thirty acres more beginning at a stake running South eighty two poles to a dogwood thence West fifty two and a half poles to a stake and pointers thence North eighty two poles to a stake thence East to the beginning Containing thirty acres with the appurtences.
