James McGowan was a son of Joseph, Sr. (c.1745-c.1801) and Martha (__?__) McGowan and a grandson of William, Sr. (c.1708-1782) and Frances (Hendricks) McGowan. James married Elizabeth "Betsy" McGowan (c.1773-c.1852) circa 1793. They were parents of at least ten, possibly eleven, children:
1. Levi McGowan (c.1794-1875) - married Sarah Eborn,
2. (Daughter) McGowan (c.1795-by1854) - married (__?__) Bridgman),
3. Isaac McGowan (c.1797-1853) - married Dorcas Carawan,
4. Joseph McGowan (c.1798-1866) - married Martha (Unknown ?),
5. Anna McGowan (c.1800-c.1878) - Never Married,
6. Wiley McGowan (c.1803-1868) - married Tabitha Norris (in TN, to IL)
7. Rebecca McGowan (1804-1851) - married Mannan Carawan,
8. Sarah McGowan (1809-1866) - married Henry Boomer,
9. Henry McGowan (c.1812-1882 - Never Married,
10. * William McGowan
(c.1814-1854) - married Rebecca Davis.
