Bk. 6, p. 336 - 28 Jan. 1856 : Hyde County Power of Attorney: Joseph McGOWAN of Beaufort County appoints Sylvester McGOWAN my true and lawful agent and attorney for my interest in what hereafter becomes due as my distributive share of my Father, James McGOWAN�S Estate, Dec�d. Wit: William DAY, Henry G. WILSON. Signed: Joseph McGOWAN. {Feb. Term 1856}

Book 30, Page 21 - 16 Oct., 1857: Joseph McGOWEN to Silvester LANIER; $175 for one Negro woman slave named ELIZA, about fifty five years old; (W) Jas. F. LATHAM; /S/ Silvester LANIER. Oct. Trem, 1857.

Book 30, Page 26 - 1 Sept., 1856: Dorcas McGOWEN of Hyde County to Richard CARROWAN of Craven Co.; $25 for 25 acres of land lying in Beaufort Co., on the South side of the Pamlico River and East side Goose (Creek), it being land descended to me by the deaths of my Sisters Polly & Agnes CARROWAN and Brothers Jordan & Henry CARROWAN, which references to the last will and testament of my Father Green CARROWAN; (W) Hyram BRIDGEMAN, Marcus CARROWAN; /S/ Dorcas (herXmark) McGOWEN. 16 Oct., 1857.

Note: Dorcas (Carrowan) McGowan, d/o Elder Green Carrowan, was the wife of Isaac McGowan. Green Carrowan lived in Hyde County and later moved to Beaufort County where he died.

Book 34, Page 280 - 3 Dec., 1868: Britty McGOWAN of Hyde Co. to Samuel G. SWINDELL; $50 for 33 2/3 acres on the South side of the Pamlico River and North side of Jones Bay, ...Nathan BAKER's corner, the edge of the Marsh, it being in the West end of the East fifty acres of the John JONES' Patent; (W) Robert HODGES, Daniel A. SPAIN; /S/ Brity (her X mark) McGOWAN. 14 Sept., 1869.

Note: Brittania (SPAIN) McGOWAN was the widow of William W. McGowan.

Book 34, Page 367 - 29 May, 1850: William & Rebecca McGOWNS to John W. DAVIS and his sister Martha; $100 for our interest and claim we have in land which the late WILLIAM DAVIS of Beaufort County possessed at the time of his death, lying in Beaufort County, with the exception of one small piece of land which the parties of the Second part have by deed dated this date and conveyed to us, parties of the first part; (W) F.B. SATTERTHWAITE; /S/ Wm. McGOWNS, Rebecca (herXmark) McGOWNS. 29 May, 1850.

Note: It is my belief that Rebecca (Davis) McGowan was the sister of John W. Davis and Martha Davis and that they were the children of William Davis of Beaufort Co., NC. I believe that William Davis lived in the area of Beaufort County which had been part of Hyde County up to 1819, when that part of Hyde County lying on the west side of the Pungo River, westward to Sinclare Creek, was ceded to Beaufort County.
