JOHN-L, JOHN-D Mail List

Over 7 years strong and 8 databases long, we have 10,691 genealogical messages posted from which your questions may be answered. And, we're adding more daily!

Please keep your mailing list posts to the topic of family surname genealogy. Should you have any concerns or questions, please send your eMail to the appropriate address listed at the bottom of this page. Your comments are important to us and by helping you, we help the group, too. Spammers will be counseled and subsequently censured.

The JOHN-L mail list is to be used for genealogical purposes related to the research of the surnames Johnes, Johne, Johns, John and variations.  It can also be used for messages of sympathy, and friendship related to our genealogical work -- but not to include personal chit chat and individual messages between members.  "Thank yous" and personal messages between members are to be handled by direct eMail messages between the interested individuals.

If you are unfamiliar with mailing lists or RootsWeb's mailing lists format, every mailing list really has two addresses -- the list name (where messages are sent), and the list name followed by "-request" (where commands to the listserver are sent). For additional information about RootsWeb's mailing lists, please refer to the What Are Mailing Lists or Subscribe/Unsubscribe Tips. Please read on for a "How To" walk-through of our JOHN-L mailing list.

You may subscribe to and unsubscribe from our mailing list in only one of two formats. "List Mode" means that each time someone posts a message to the list you will receive this post as a separate eMail message. "Digest Mode" means you will receive all of the posts to the list, but these posts are grouped into a single eMail message that is sent once or twice a day. There is an index that accompanies this single eMail message that shows you the subject lines of all of the grouped posts.

The subscribe and unsubscribe messages will be automatically handled by RootsWeb and you will receive a confirmation message with complete instructions.

If you wish to change the mailing list mode format of your subscription, simply unsubscribe from one mode before you subscribe to the other mode. You will not be able to subscribe to one mode while subscribed to the other mode. As a result, you will be unable to receive messages from the list.

Accuracy when entering a mailing list's name is practical, as it is wise. The mailing list's name is "case sensitive". If the list name appears in upper case, your eMail message must show the text in upper case. If the list name appears in lower case, your eMail message must show the text in lower case.

How To Post a message to the JOHN-L Mail List

Before you post a message to the list, please spend a few minutes searching the list's archived posts for your answers. There are two sections to enter when searching the mailing list archives.

The interactive search tool allows you to lookup archived posts from our mailing list. To perform a search, simply click RootsWeb's Mailing Lists Interactive Search. Select which database you wish to search and enter a "keyword" (e.g., Sir Thomas Johnes) and click "Search". Your results will display and you will have some idea of how to phrase your message if you have more questions.

The JOHN-L mailing list directory maintains a large database containing numerous posts. Click RootsWeb's Threaded Archives JOHN-L Directory and select which database to view. Your results will display and you will have some idea of how to phrase your message if you have more questions.

If you are still unable to find the answers to your questions after all of your commendable efforts -- to send an eMail to everyone subscribed to the list, simply post a single message to JOHN-L@rootsweb.com.
