Francis Henry Ervin, b. 12/23/1835 d. 11/18/1903, Medical Doctor, graduate of University of Virginia in 1858, married Mary Elizabeth Anderson, Pontotoc, Miss., daughter of Benjamin Dabney Anderson, lawyer, State Legistlator, Government Land Agend, Mason, referred to as Colonel (Service not proved). He married Sarah Frances Lindley, daughter of Rev. Jacob Lindley, graduated from Princeton in 1800, Presbyterian minister, and first president of the University of Ohio, Athens, Ohio. Lindley was descended from Governor Robert Treat of Connecticut. Mrs. Mary Anderson Ervin became an ardent prohibitionist. She was first president of the W.C.T.U. of Mississippi, and National Vice-President. Her interest in the youth caused her to originate and push for passage of the First Reform Bill for Juvenile Delinquents passed by the Mississippi Legislature. It was supposed to separate the old and the new offenders. Mary E. Anderson was born 1/19/1842, Pontotoc, Miss., and died Columbus, Miss., 11/1/1924. Ref: Goodspeed's "History of Mississippi." As a Confederate soldier Dr. Ervin was captured at Gettysburg, Pa., and discharged from Johnson's Island, Ohio, June 18, 1865, having taken the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. on that date. He had served the southern prisoners in the prison Sandusky as it was called, during the previous winter, because they had no medical attention given them by the U.S. He was a man of love and though brought up a Presbyterian became active in the Methodist Church at New Hope near his home in Lowndes County, Miss. Dr. and Mrs. Ervin were religious people, and Dr. Ervin, never refused a call from white or the Negro population serving after the war many times without pay. This was evidenced at his funeral when one whole hill was covered with the colored population who had come from miles around. Any member of his descendants can be members of the "Stars and Bars".
