John Cannon arrived in S.C. about the time it was opened up as a Royal Colony of England. He was later followed to S.C. by a younger brother, Daniel Cannon. Daniel Cannon, the younger brother of John Cannon was born 10 July 1726 and died in 1809. He lived in Charleston, had a home on Queen St., and was a member of St. Phillip's Church. He married 1) 8 March 1749, Martha Winn, died 1753; married 2) 30 October 1755, Mary Doughty.
Daniel Cannon went into the lumber export business. His company acquired slaves and found a way to float logs to their mills where they were cut into lumber and loaded directly onto ships. This area was called Cannonboro and Cannon's Point. Daniel Cannon invested in farming on Goose Creek and grew long staple cotton, which commanded a premium price. His son, Daniel, later took over the business.

SAMUEL ERVIN
Samuel Ervin's grandfather, John Ervin, and his wife Elizabeth Allison (Ellison) were born in keland prior to 1720 and migrated to the Williamsburg District of South Carolina in 1732. He died March 18, 1773 and she died November 18, 1795. Samuel's father, Col. John Ervin, was born March25, 1754 in Cedar Swamp, Williamsburg County, South Carolina, and died May 5, 1810. His wife, Jane Witherspoon, was born January 23, 1753 and died September 20, 1790. Colonel Ervin commanded the Britton's Neck Regiment of Marion's Brigade in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. Seven children were born of this marriage, however four died young. Samuel, the first child of this union, was born on his father's plantation July 6, 1776. His brother, James Robert Ervin, was the great-grandfather of Senator Sam Ervin from Morganton, NC, who was of Watergate fame in the 1970's. His sister, Elizabeth, migrated to Mississippi and married Judge Ebenezer Ford. John Ervin, after the death of his first wife, married Margaret Ervin on October 6, 1791 and had three additional children, Hugh, Mary who died young, and John.
While residing in South Carolina, Samuel Ervin married twice: [1] Sarah (Dewitt) James. No children resulted from this union. [2] Harriet Keith. They were married in Darlington, SC and moved to Georgia. Their three children were Amelia (b. 1807), Samuel James (b.1814), and Harriet Keith (b. November 10,1817). Samuel's wife Harriet, died and was buried in 1818 in Darlington, SC.
In 1810, Samuel, temporarily leaving his family behind in Georgia, migrated to a part of The Mississippi Territory, which later became Baldwin County, AL, in search of beffer land opportunities. His sister, Elizabeth Ervin, and their two half brothers, Hugh Ervin (age 16) and John Ervin (age 14) accompanied him, but all three later moved to what became Copiah County, Mississippi.
Samuel established a large plantation in the vicinity of Tensas Lake, near St. Stephens, AL. In 1812, Samuel was elected to the Mississippi Territorial House of Representatives. During the War of 1812, he served in Henry Company of the 1st Regiment of the Mississippi Volunteers. In 1813 Samuel was elected as a Delegate to Congress and Representative to the Territorial Legislature. In 1815 and 1817, he was elected to the House of Representatives of the Mississippi Territorial Legislature.
In 1820, Samuel Ervin sold his land in Baldwin County and moved to Wilcox County, AL, where he operated a large plantation at Coal Bluff On July 11, 1820, he married Mary Ann (Eades) Gullett in the home of her father, Captain John Eades. Mary Ann was born March 17, 1800 in Columbia County, GA. She and Samuel had one child, Robert Hugh Ervin, born September 11, 1822. Mary Ann was previously married to George Gullett and they had two children, John Eades Gullett, born August 20, 1816, and George Samuel Gullett, born March 17, 1819.
Samuel Ervin died January 26, 1823, leaving Mary Ann to raise her three small children. On April 9, 1825, Mary Ann married Dr. Squire G. Grayson. Mary Ann died on August 26, 1831, leaving her son, Robert Hugh Ervin, to be raised by Dr. Grayson. Her sons, John Eades Gullett, and George Samuel Gullett, were raised by their grandfather, Captain John Eades.
After the death of Samuel in 1823, Amelia Ervin, Samuel James Ervin, and Harriet Keith Ervin moved to Copian County, Mississippi and were raised by Samuel's sister, Elizabeth Ervin Ford.
