When Edward Knox Powe was 17 years of age, he bagan work in a clearical capacity with Holt-Gant in Altamahaw NC, and rendered valuable service to the textile plants. He assisted in building the plant of Erwin Cotton Mills in West Durham NC and served as mill superintendent until 1900 and then was promoted to general manager, a position he held until death. Mr. Powe was one of Durham's leading citizens. He was a member of the vestry of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Durham. He was deputy-governor of the Society of Mayflower Decendants, Sons of the American Revolution, Knights of Pythias and the Pilgrim John Howland Society of Massachusetts and many others.
Claudia Josephine Erwin was educated at St. Mary's School in Raleigh NC and held membership in DAR and Colonial Dames of America.
