William Bell "Bill" McCorkle was born July 23, 1876 at Burlington, Iowa. The family lived for some time in Iowa, and also in Nebraska. At a young age, Probably 16 or 17 years of age, Dad moved to Wyoming where he worked for Bill Cody during the summer months. During the winter months, he worked for ranchers and sheepmen. This he continued until the cattlemen and sheepmen went to war over grazing lands. As a result of these hostilities, many people moved to other states and to Canada. Dad decided Canada was the place to go. In the spring of 1903, he and his friend, Chalrie Hanner, packed their belongings i nwagons and set out, eventually arriving at Leavings, which is now Granum, in August of 1903. He ws able to find work with farmers and ranchers of the area. Because animals were a great love of his life, he always took in all the rodeos and was a constant winner. Dad was well-known for his exceptional riding ability. He broke horses for the R.C.M.P. at Lethbridge during the winter months.

My dad met Clare Edna Wallin at Roundup, and on Spetember 16, 1905, they were married. Mother was born in the Flat Head County area near Kalispell, Montana on May 23, 1889. Their eldest daughter, Hazel was born on September 14, 1906 at Roundup. Their second child Ellen was born January 22, 1908. Wilbur, their only son was born on May 28, 1910 on Dad's homestead near Mud Lake.

Making ends meet and trying to raise and educate a family in these difficult years proved to be quite a challenge, and homesteading was not too profitable. Dad then returned to construciton work, which he continued for many years, working on many projects in southern Alberta. He retired in the town of Fort MaCleod, where he resided until his passing in 1954.

Page 49 - Date July 24, 1902: We camped at a little lake and had our supper. I noticed another outfit camped there also. I went over to see them, and was surprised to find out that it was our neighbors, Mr. Hank Fordham and wife, and his father and mother, and brother Charley. They lived only one mile from us in down in Wyomig. I knew Hank had sold out, but I did not know that he was headed this way. We had a good visit with them, but it was hindered a little by a quarrel that took place between Hank and his brother Charley. Some dispute came up and they almost came to blows. The next morning the father and mother and Charley left for the States again, but Hank and his wife went north.

Cause of Death - Accidental drowning, all three children fell through the ice at the same time. The Observer, date was February 4, 1920 as follows:

A sad fatality occurred at Anstey Arm just after 1 o'clock on Sunday last resulting in the death of two boys and a girl. The children of Mrs. Fordham, a widow who was working as a cook in the Loma Tie Camp. There were five children in the family, three boys and two girls. Last Sunday, the eldest was on the ice skating and when about thirty feet from the shore, the ice gave way and he fell face downward and thereby saved his own life. His younger sister was sliding at the time, went to his rescue and when within a few feet of him fell through the ice, she was in turn followed by the two youngest boys, who likewise fell into the water, none of the three being seen alive again. The young child raised an alarm at the camp and some of the men were soon on the spot. Jack WIckham rescued the eldest boy who was still lying in a helpless condition on the ice, but not without being precipitated into the water himself. Jack Wickham could swim, however, whilst the children drowned could not do so, by the aid of a rope he was pulled to the shore as also was the eldest Fordham boy. The bodies of the other 3 children were rescued a half hour afterwards from the hole in the ice, about four feet square through which they all disappeared to their doom. The names of the children who were drowned were Margaret (age 14 years next month) and Wiliam and Warren age 12 and 11 years respectively last November. Through lack of communication nothing was heard of the sad tragedy until yesterday, when the bodies were brought to Sicamous. Dr. A.K. Connoly, Coroner for this district, was at once notified and left for Sicamous yesterday afternoon. After hearing the evidence of the surviving son and of Mr. Jack Wickham he decided it was not necessary to hod aninquest. The three bodies were brought to Salmon Arm last night and were interred in the Mt. Ida Cemetery today. The Rev. J.S. Cheshire conducted the funeral service.

Roy and Sally Fordham visited Salmon Arm, B.C. August 22, 1996. Upon checking at the funeral home found the records only went back to 1958. After which they went to the Mt. Ida Cemetery. The caretaker advised that he had no records foth e Fordahm graves, but he did direct them to the portion of the cemetery where burials took place in 1920. They spotted quite a few tombstones dated, 1919, 1920, etc., but no Fordham tombstones. It was their conclusion that the three Fordham children were buried in unmarked graves. ....
