NOTE: A + sign in front of a child indicates the child married and had a new family group of his own. This is information I acquired in trying to separate the many Fultons in Augusta County, Virginia. I am not descended from this line here so have no further information at this time. My thanks to Mrs.Katharine Bushman of Augusta County who did much research on my behalf.  I have gone back to my original sources to verify the points challenged by other researchers.  The sources are at the bottom of the page as they have always been without speculation on my part.  Data all provided by Mrs. Katharine Bushman in 1992.

1. John Fulton⁽²⁾ , born: date and place unknown, died before 24 August 1778 ⁽³⁾ in  Rockingham County, created March 1778 from Augusta County, Virginia.  Spouse unknown. John Fulton served in Capt. John Christianson's regiment in 1742.⁽⁴⁾   Will provisions were: "James Wilson, orphan of Andrew Wilson to be bound to Thomas Fulton to learn trade of cooper, two years old last Christmas."

Observation of Mrs. Bushman: James Fulton  (son of either John Fulton of Rockingham or William Fulton who died in Gallia County, Ohio. Only place he could possibly fit in.)

3. ii. William Fulton ⁽⁵⁾ born circa 1730, probably in Pennsylvania or New England. Died before 13 April 1821 Gallia Co., Ohio.  Tombstone says he was 91 yrs old. 

5. iii. James Fulton was born 15 April 1751 in Augusta County, Virginia and died 15 July 1839 in Gallia County, Ohio. He and his wife are buried in the Bing Cemetery.⁽⁸⁾ Married Jane Matthews, daughter of William Matthews ⁽⁹⁾ and Mary Wright. Jane Matthews was born 29 January 1753 ⁽¹⁰⁾ , Augusta County, Virginia and died 1819 in Gallia County.

James Fulton went to Gallia County about 1806 from Augusta County, Virginia. Several deeds for James Fulton were found in Augusta County, Virginia all on the Great Calfpasture River, but farther south in the valley than that of James Fulton's (d. 1753) family⁽¹¹⁾ .

James Fulton served very briefly in the Revolutionary War. However, his application for pension was rejected. On James Fulton's application for pension on April 12, 1836 under the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1831, he states he marched from Augusta County , Virginia, to Point Pleasant, (West) Virginia where he took part in the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774. For his part in this battle he was later awarded a farm in Ohio for each of his four sons for the payment of a small fee for the patent or deed in the Ohio Land Company office in Marietta, Ohio. This march totaled 700 miles (as crow flies) in wilderness and took nearly two months.

In June 1778 he was again drafted into service under Lieutenant John Wahab proceeded to Warm Springs..where joined Regiment commanded by Colonel Abram Smith, and then to Hale's Fort on Jackson River where he remained five weeks and then received his discharge and returned home to Augusta Co....Also 1779 served three months under command of Captain William Kincade and marched to Portsmouth, etc.

He further states that in the month of August, in the year 1781, he was drafted for three months and placed in a company commanded by Lieutenant Wahab, and attached to a regiment commanded by Col. Samuel Lewis. He was then by order of said Col. Lewis directed to press into the service a wagon and team and convey the baggage to South River which was about forty miles distant, and then, (being a blacksmith by trade) he was directed by said Lewis to do certain blacksmith work, and then to come and join his company near Little York. And after having pressed a wagon and team, and conveyed said baggage as ordered, which took him about two months, he hired a substitute by the name of John Grinter, who was accepted in his place for the balance of the time for which he had been drafted and he again returned home to Augusta Co., Virginia. Total 80 miles.

In summation, he was rejected for pension because he could not prove he had served the required six months; it was thought by some officer that it should not have taken him two months to do the blacksmith work on the wagon and go that far with the baggage. When he applied for the pension in 1836, the Battle of Point Pleasant was not considered a battle of the American Revolution. Also, when he testified in 1836, he was almost 85 years old and his memory was not accurate on dates and names.

+ 14. iii. William Fulton born circa 1777-1778. Married 27 September 1803 Augusta County to Jinney Lockridge. Died 1871 at age of 94.

6. John Fulton was married 23 June 1781 to Jannet Dunn in Rockingham County. Bondsman was Thomas Fulton. He died before 26 November 1781, intestate. Administrator, widow, Jennet; bond 200,000; David Rolston surety. Jenet Fulton, widow, married James Doak, 20 February 1786.

7. Thomas Fulton married Elizabeth; died testate, 1800. James Magill ⁽¹⁴⁾ , executor; bond set at 2000 pounds. Widow married William Cockran, Sr. on 31 December 1801. In his will, Thomas Fulton mentions his two children, James and Martha. Other legatees in his will were Eloner Harris (sister?) and Elizabeth Fulton, sister.

20. ii. Martha Fulton. Martha Fulton died before 8 February 1802, intestate; William Cockran, adm; bond set at 1000 pounds. On 17 February 1802, William Cockoran⁽¹⁸⁾ , was named guardian of Maria Fulton, orphan of Martha Fulton ⁽¹⁹⁾ .

James Fulton's death record was located in Rockingham Co., Va. He died April 4, 1855, of rheumatism at the age of 64 yrs 1 mo. His father's name was   Thomas and his mother's name was Elizabeth

12. Mary Fulton, who was born circa 1777, Augusta County, Virginia was married 3 August 1797, Augusta County, by Reverend John Montgomery, pastor of Rocky Spring Presbyterian Church, on the Great Calf Pasture River to Samuel Bing, born (2 or 5)⁽²⁰⁾ September 1753 and died 27 December 1827. Mary Fulton died 26 August 1855 at her son-in-law's home, James Blake, not far from the mouth of Campaign Creek. Both are buried in the Bing Cemetery Addison Twp, Gallia Co., Ohio.

13. Margaret Fulton was born circa 1779, Augusta County, Virginia. She married 19 March 1799 (marriage bond only) to Ferdinand Kinkead; they lived in the area of Bath and Highland counties. They were the parents of several children, but only two, James and Isabelle, accompanied their parents west to Gallia County.

16. John Fulton (WC15552) was born circa 1791; died 6 April 1864; married 1) Mary Martindale; 2) Nancy⁽²²⁾ Shaver (Adkins) Atkinson, a widow on 4 July 1837 in Gallia Co., Ohio. Nancy Shaver was born 12 August 1799, and died 6 April 1890. Buried in the Rife Cemetery, Addison Twp. Gallia Co., Ohio.

John Fulton was a soldier in the War of 1812 and served in Calvin Shepard's Company, in the Ohio Militia. He died the 10 April 1864 and his wife died on the 6 April 1890 in Bulaville, Ohio. John Fulton buried in the Bing Cemetery.

19, James Fulton, born circa 1791, married 5 November 1812 to Mary Hottel, daughter of Henry Hottel (German). In 1850 census of Rockingham, James, born in Va., was 59 years old, a farmer, with real estate valued at $7320. Living with him was Thomas K. Fulton, born in Virginia, age 38.

 
63. Thomas K. Fulton was named sole heir in his mother, Mary (Polly) Fulton's will⁽²⁴⁾ . Mary Fulton died between 28 February 1868 when the will was written and 23 March 1868 when it was probated.

1. ¹There is a John Fulton who died in 1764 with a daughter Elizabeth, age 16, who was required to choose a guardian. It is not known if this John is related to the Rockingham Fulton's or the Augusta/Rockbridge branches.

In courthouse fires, efforts were made to save the land records first.)
4. ⁴Copies of muster rolls of Augusta County are among the Preston papers held by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. 1742, Capt. John Christian's list includes James and John Fulton.
5. ⁵Buried in Fulton family plot in Bing Cemetery in Gallia County, Ohio near James and Jane Fulton. Believed to be uncle (or father) of James.
6. ⁶Old Style N23 Kinkade vs. Cunningham. Bill filed 1803. Thomas Kinkade was a very ignorant and illiterate man. Walter Cunningham bought the land from Andrew Donnally and is now living in Kentucky. Andrew Donnelly testifies: that in 1753 John and Robert Fulton planted four acres of corn on a plantation nowowned by William Reenick called Cave Place. The Fultons lived there with their families and deponent lived there with them for the purpose of digging quisang. Boughman's Fort was broken up by Indians in 1754, etc. Robert does not fit into any other family, lived in area of John. Robert, son of Hugh, of Augusta County, who wasn't born until 1760 could not have been the schoolmaster or corn planter.
7. ⁷Marriage records for both Mary and Jane Fulton state `daughter of John'. In addition, Hannah Fulton's marriage shows consent by John Fulton.
8. ⁸The consensus of genealogical researchers for Augusta County is that James of Gallia County can not possibly fit into any other Augusta County Family except that of John or William Fulton of Rockingham County, which was at one time part of Augusta County, but it cannot be proved conclusively whether he is the son of John or William.
9. There were two Matthews families in Augusta Co., Virginia. William Matthews lived in the Northwest part of the county on Moffet's Branch and the John Mathews family lived in Rockbridge County. An undocumented Bible page (no title page) says both William Mathews and his wife Mary Wright were born in County Armagh, Ireland.

19. ¹⁹Maria Fulton married Samuel Burgess. Samuel Burgess and his wife Maria, daughter of Martha Fulton were involved in a lawsuit against Magill and other heirs of Thomas Fulton to claim Maria's share of her mother's inheritance.
