NOTE: The variant spellings are only reflections from the musters or
whatever records were used in compiling the card index. Regimental
histories and other well known works will help you plot your Civil
War ancestor's movements through that worst of American wars.

An Item of General Interest:I have discovered that in the second
canvass or enumeration, of Manhattan, New York (then New York County)
in 1870, and Philadelphia, Pa., same year, the exact street and house
numbers were universally used for the first time in an American Cen-
sus (England started it in 1841 and Ireland in 1821!). I have never
seen this published in any HOW TO books. HR takes credit. However,
it was much sloppier, and none of the categories after birthplace are
put down, nor the values of real and personal estates. It was taken
in late 1870 and early 1871, and presents a problem lining it up with
the first enumeration. Your editor has just completed the first enum-
eration of New York City, Wards, 1-22, page by page. Pray for him.
