| JACOB2 HOLLINGSWORTH, second child of Frederick1 & Elizabeth (Brown)
Hollingsworth, ws born June 5, 1842, in Cherry Valley township, Winnebago
County, Illinois, U.S.A.; died July 23, 1917, at Newton, Jasper Couty, Iowa,
at 11:55 A.M. of heart disease, aged 75 years, 1 month, 18 days. He is
buried in Newton Union Cemetery. |
| He married (1) Feb. 21, 1870, Kellogg, Jasper Co., Iowa, MRS. ANN ELIZABETH
(CASTNER) HAMBRICK, (widow of Frank Hambrick), eldest child of Stewart
McClaine & Mary (Hildebrandt) Castner, natives of Hunterdon Co., New Jersey.
She was born in 1843, in School District No. 5, Lebanon twp., Hunterdon Co.,
N.J.; died February ____, 1884, in Richland township, Jasper County, near
Grinnell, Iowa, aged 41 years. She is buried in Bethel Cemetery, southeast
of Kellogg, without a marker. The lot owner was George Castner, her
brother. Issue 1 child by this marriage, and 2 by her former marriage to
Frank Hambrick. (See below). |
| Jacob Hollingsworth married (2) Oct. 24, 1887, Newton, Iowa, and again on
May 23, 1901, Green Bay, Brown Co., Wisconsin, (They had been divorced for a
time and re-married) MRS. GEORGIA M. (TITMUS) HOBLETT, (widow of James
Hoblett) daughter of William & Sarah (Pi_g) Titmus, natives of Virginia.
She was born Aug. 19, 1856, at Norfolk, Norfolk Co., Virginia; died Feb. 23,
1915, at Newton, Iowa, aged 58 years; buried beside her husband. Issue 3
children by this marriage. |
| Jacob2 Hollingsworth received a common school education at Cherry Valley,
Illinois. He followed farming the greater portion of his life. He
accompanied his parents to Iowa in 1864, at the age of 22. They settled in
Independence township, (which was near the town of Rhodes, in Marshall
county) Jasper county. Not many years later, Stewart M. Castner and his
family came to live near Newton. He was a wagon maker by trade, and had
lived near Princeton, Bureau county, Illinois, for a number of years. It is
believed, but not proven, that Frank Hambrick, the first husband of Ann E.,
(or "Lizzie") Hambrack Hollingsworth, was killed in the War of the
Rebellion, 1861-1865. She was a widow with two small children when they
arrived in Iowa. Stewart (sometimes called "Steward") Castner had a huge
family of his own, and it was not long till the young widow met and married
Jacob Hollingsworth. They had one child, Jacob Ellerton Hollingsworth. The
editor had the privilege of corresponding with Jacob E. Hollingsworth, who
lived to be 94. But neither Jacob nor any other in the family or
acquaintences, knew the reason for the "Ellerton". |
| In 1876, Jacob purchased, from Sarah Mendenhall, a friend of the family,
160 acres in Section 1, Richland township. He paid $1,800.00 for this farm.
It was near the road from Kellogg to Grinnell. In those days, both towns
were new, but growing fast. (Deed Book 85, p. 466, S.W. Quarter, Section 1,
Twp. 79 North, Range 17 West of 5th Meridian, filed Newton County Recorder
Sept. 29, 1876). He sold � of this to one of his wife's relatives, F.
Hildebrandt, who joined him in partnership on the farm. (Book 99, p. 588,
Book 114, p. 265, ibid). Still later, in 1880, the family purchased 40
acres in Section 2, near the home farm, for $600.00. (Book 114, p. 264.
N.W. Quarter of S.W. Quarter, Sec. 2, Twp. 79N, R 17 W. 5 P.N. Recorded Mar
13, 1880). The tragic death of Lizzie was soon followed by the sale of all
the above property and the splitting up of the family. |
