The Last Will and Testament of Richard Arrendell, 18 February 1758

            In the Name of God Amen.
            This Eighteenth Day of February one thousand seven hundred & fifty eight, I Richard Arrendell of the County of Granville in the Province of North Carolina, planter, being sikley & weak in body, but of perfect mind & memory, thanks be given unto God; therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing that it is appointed for all men to Dye Do make & ordain this my Last Will & Testament, that is to say principally & first of all I give & Recommend my sole into the hands of God that gave it & my Body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in Decent Christian Bureal, at the Discretion of my Executor, nothing Doubting but at the general Resurrection shall [receive] by me again by the Mighty Power of God; and as touching such Worldly Estate where with it hath pleased God to Bless me in this Life I give, Demise, & Dispose of the same in the following manner & forme:

            Item.    I give & bequeath to my well beloved son William Arrendell one Shilling Sterling money to him his heirs & assigns forever.

            Item.    I give & bequeath to my well beloved son John Arrendell one Shilling Sterling money.

            Item.    I give & bequeath to my three Daughters Sarah, Rebeckah and Mary ten Shillings Virginia money to each of them by them freely to be possessed & enjoyed after the Decease of my Wife Ellinor.

            Item.    I give and bequeath to the use of my beloved son James Arrendell all my land below Jumping Run on the South side Crooked Creek in this County During his Natural Life and after his Decease, I give & bequeath the aforesaid Land to my grandson Richard Arrendell the son of James Arrendell after his father's Decease to him his heirs & assigns forever by them freely to be possessed as aforesaid.

            Item.    I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Thomas Arrendell my Plantation Whereon I now Dwell on Crooked Creek in the County aforesaid and the Residue of my lands to him his heirs and assigns forever by him freely to be possessed and enjoyed after the Decease of his Mother. Item.    I leave unto the use of my well beloved wife Ellinor Arrendell all my Estate, Goods and Chattles during her natural live & no longer & my Will is that after the Death of my said Wife that all my personal Estate goods & chattles be Equally Divided between my three sons James, Benjamin & Thomas Arrendell and to be to there use & there heirs & assigns forever and I do hereby Nominate and appoint my well beloved Wife Ellinor Arrendell my Whole & Sole Executor of this my Last Will and Testament and I do hereby utterly Disallow Revoke and Disannul all & every other former Testaments, Wills, Legacies & bequeaths and Executions by me in any [?] before Named Willed & bequeathed, Ratifying and confirming this & no other to be my Last Will & Testament.

            In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day and year before written.

                Franklin County        May Court 1762
        This Will was proved by the Oath of William Mooney one of the Subscribing Witnesses thereto and ordered to be Recorded and on the motion of James Arundell, Administration of the Deceased's Estate with this Will annexed was granted to him [?] the same entering into Bond with Securities in the Sum of two hundred pounds [good] money for his just & faithful Administration thereof.
