Benjamin Jones

Benjamin Jones, 71, of Hill Street, former stationary engineer for the T.A. McNichol Pottery Company, died Monday at 7:10 p.m. in his home, after a year's illness.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.  He was born in England.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, he leaves three sons, Harry and Benjamin of East Liverpool, and John of England; a daughter, Mrs. Rose Evans of Pittsburgh; a brother, Harry of England, and a sister, Mrs. Joseph R. Allsager of England.

Funeral services will be held at the home Thursday at 2 p.m., in charge of Dr. J.H. Lawther, pastor of the First Presbyterian church.  Burial will be made in Riverview Cemetery.

Mrs. Elizabeth Bradbury Jones, 94, of East Liverpool died Sunday night in the Gibbs Rest Home at 1003 Riverside Ave., Wellsville.

Mrs. Jones was the widow of Benjamin Jones, who died in 1933.  Born in England, she was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.  She leaves no survivors.

The body was taken to Martin Funeral Home.  Arrangements are incomplete.

Services for Mrs. Elizabeth Bradbury Jones, widow of Benjamin Jones, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Martin Funeral Home by the Rev. Clark K. Oler, assistant rector of St. John's Episcopal Church of Youngstown.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones, a former East Liverpool resident, died Sunday night in the Gibbs Rest Home in Wellsville, where she had resided since 1940.  She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church of East Liverpool.

Harry Jones

Harry Jones, 48, of 644 1/2 St. Clair Avenue, died in City hospital at 3:30 a.m. today after a several weeks illness.

Mr. Jones was born in Hanley, England, a son of Benjamin and Alice Jones.  He was a locomotive engineer for the Pittsburgh Crucible Steel Co., of Midland for the last 13 years.  He was a member of the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary A. Jones; two brothers, Benjamin Jones of East Liverpool and John W. Jones of Hanley, England, and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Evans of Pittsburgh.

Funeral services will be held in the home of Benjamin Jones in 1104 Riverview Street Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in charge of Rev. R. K. Caulk, rector of the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends are requested to call at the Benjamin home Tuesday night.

Mrs. Rose Jones Evans

Mrs. Rose Ellen Jones Evans, 51, formerly of East Liverpool, died in her home in 6544 Frankstown Ave., Pittsburdh, Saturday at 9:30 p.m. after a nine-week illness.

Mrs. Evans was born in Market-draton, England, a daughter of Benjamin and Alice Casto Jones.  She left East Liverpool for Pittsbrugh in 1928.  She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

She leaves her husband, Thomas Edward Evans of Pittsburgh; one son, William T. Evans of Pittsburgh; two brothers, John W. Jones in England and Benjamin Jones of East Liverpool; and two grandchildren.

Notes for THOMAS EDWARD EVANS:
The following notes were given by Ruth Carpenter to Bonnie Ryan 7-1996:

Grandad Evans was called back to England when his mother became ill.
He went over on the "Lusitania" with my grandmother and my father.  Since the Lucitania was sunk in May of 1915, I believe my father was about 3 years old. 
They had to stay in England when World War I broke out.  World War I was from 1914-1918.  While they were there, my grandmother was a practical nurse and we are not sure what my grandfather did during the time but my father was taken care of by a neighbor lady.

They returned to the United States on the "Maritania" and I figure my father would have been 7 or 8 at the time.

Mom doesn't know if they were married in England or the US.

She said that Grandad had a real prosperous dairy farm in East Liverpool (OH) and that some men came and told him they were from the government and said his herd of cows was infected with T.B. and that they had to take his cows away to be destroyed.  He felt it was something of a hoax and followed them and watched as they slaughtered the cows and sold the meat for profit.

It was during this time that he was so depressed as his livelihood was destroyed that they sold and moved to Pittsburgh where he became a milkman.

Mr. Jones was born in England and had lived in East Liverpool 29 years.  He was employed as a kilnman by the Edwin M. Knowles China Co. in Newell.  He was a member of the Orchard Grove Community Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Anna M. Riddle Jones; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Baker of the Fredericktown Road, and four grandchildren.

Rites will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home by Rev. David W. Skeen, pastor of the Orchard Grove Church.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Mrs. Anna Mabel Jones, 72, of 1068 Oak Street., a retired seamstress and widow of Ben Jones, died this morning at 4:50 at City Hospital after an illness of 2 1/2 months.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Mrs. Jones was born Sept. 7, 1895, a daughter of the late Isaiah Riddle and Harriett Brassington Riddle.  She had resided here for 70 years.  She worked for the Arrow Pants Shop, retiring in 1964.  She belonged to the Orchard Grove Community Methodist Church.  Her husband died Dec. 27, 1964.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Kendall (Ruth) Baker, and a brother, William Riddle, both of East Liverpool; a sister, Mrs. Ed (Louise) Smith of Wheeling, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home by the Rev. Phillip N. Carl.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

   Mrs. Ruth E. Baker, 60, of 50881 Duke Rd. died Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a week's illness.

    A life long resident, Mrs. Baker was born here Feb. 27, 1918, a daughter of Benjamin E. Jones and Anna Mabel Riddle Jones.
 She was graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1935.  

   Mrs. Baker was a member of the former Orchard Grove United Methodist Church and the Vandalia Extension Homemakers Club.

   Besides her husband, Kendall W. Baker, whom she married March 22, 1939, survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Charles (Bonnie) Ryan, Mrs. Noble (Diana) Rose of Akron, Mrs. Carl (Nancy) Hadley, Mrs. Edwin (Linda) Morgan and Mrs. Larry (Karen) Gibson, all of East Liverpool, and nine grandchildren.

   Services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. from the Martin Funeral Home here.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Kendall W. Baker, 77

East Liverpool - Kendall W. Baker, 77, of Duke Road died Thursday, Oct. 13, 1994, at the Medical Center of Beaver following a six-month illness.

He was born in Meigs County, Ohio, Dec. 3, 1916, as son of the late Charles W. and Bertha Bentz Baker.

He lived here most of his life.  He was employed 37 years as a steel chaser on the open hearth at the former Crucible Steel Co. before retiring in 1978.  He graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1934.  He attended the Calcutta United Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Farm Bureau of Columbiana County.

His first wife, Ruth Jones Baker, whom he married March 22, 1939, died Aug. 3, 1978.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqualine Skeens Coleman Baker of Calcutta; five daughters, Mrs. Charles (Bonnie) Ryan of Chester, Mrs. Carl (Nancy) Hadley, Mrs. Edwin (Linda) Morgan and Mrs. Larry (Karen) Gibson of Calcutta and Mrs. Noble (Diana) rose of Akron, Ohio; a brother, Ross W. Baker of Calcutta; a sister, Leora Schmitt of Calcutta; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Dr. John Cheetham of the Chester First Presbyterian Church will conduct services at 11 a.m. Monday at the Martin Chapel of the Martin-Altmeyer Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Riverview  Cemetery.
