Serious disagreement exists over the early origins of the German SOMMER/SOMMERS/SUMMERS family in America.  The various differences result from documented evidence that lists more than one Johann George (Hans Jorg) SOMMER arriving in America from "the Palatinate" area of what is now Germany.  Disagreement exists whether our ancestor arrived in Philadelphia aboard the Ship "St. Andrew" in 1738 or on the Ship "Brothers" in 1752. Passenger lists for both ships list a Johann George or ("Hans Jorg") SOMER/SOMMER. There is also question as to who his wife and children were; most sources list the earlier Johann George's wife as Maria Margaretha while the latter Johann George was married to Elizabeth. Documented evidence indicates that either: (1) both Johann Georg SOMMERS had a son named John or Joannes SOMMERS who settled in Middlebrook, Augusta County, Virginia, or (2), that one of them had two sons named John who settled there. The two John SOMMERS died within a few years of each other, and both are buried at St. John's Cemetery. To make matters worse, both John SOMMERS' may have married women named Elizabeth (or Elizabetha) REIDENAUR, who may have been sisters. The chart below reflects the most likely lineage based on overwhelming evidence.

The migrations of our SOMMERS/SUMMERS ancestors took them from Germany to eastern Pennsyl- vania, then to the Shenandoah valley of Virginia, and finally to southern Indiana.  John SUMMERS' son Jacob married Christiana VENIS in Augusta County, Virginia, in about 1807. In 1818, Jacob and Christiana left the Shenandoah Valley to settle in Floyd County, Indiana, where they spent the rest of their lives..

Joseph SUMMERS, the son of Jacob and Christiana (VENIS) SUMMERS, married Elizabeth UTZ in 1838.  Christina SUMMERS, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth, married William HOPPER in 1868.  Their daughter Susie HOPPER married my Grandfather, William OTT, in 1901.

NOTE: The 1787 Will of Johann Georg SOMMERS, executed about five years
after the death of his son Johann Michael, refers to "...Michael Sommers' deceased
heirs", which would be his three daughters: Susannah, Catherine, and Margaret. The
Will, especially in the condensed form as shown in Chalkley's Chronicles, can be
easily misread or misinterpreted, leading the reader to think that the name "John",
immediately following the above phrase, refers to a son of the deceased Johann
Michael.  In actuality, this "John" is the son of Johann Georg, shown immediately below.

NOTES: This John Sommers is the same person to whom many researchers have incorrectly
             attributed the name John "Tobin" SUMMERS. The error was probably caused by a
             misreading of his tombstone and recorded in Dorothy Weaver's book "Here Lyeth".
             Additionally, most researchers have assumed that this John SOMMERS was also
             married to an Elizabeth Reidennaur, but I have found no marriage record to confirm
            that.

NOTE: There is no marriage record for Jacob and Christiana in Augusta Co. They
were probably married by publication of banns only. Proof that they were legally
married can be found in the fact that baptisms of some of their children can
be found in the records of St. John's Church.

NOTE: According to one source, Henry VENIS (FINIS in original German) was a
Hessian soldier serving in the British army who was captured at the Revolutionary
War Battle of Trenton. At the end of the war, he elected to remain in America rather
than return to Germany.

NOTE: After her divorce from William Hopper in 1880, Christina
married David Mosier. David first appears in the 1850 census as
a 27 year-old neighbor of Joseph and Elizabeth Summers, Chris-
tina's parents. In 1850 David was married to Susanna Mosier and
had two children:Lafayette (4) and Penelope Ann (3). Christina
was only 9 years old at this time. My grandmother Susie called
David "Daddie". She was only 4 yrs. old when David and Christina
married.
