Hopper Family History

Hopper Family Chart

UPDATED 6/29/2009

Researching the Hopper family has been the most rewarding genealogical endeavor that I have undertaken. With the help of several other researchers, I have been able to piece together over a period of five years a puzzle spanning almost four hundred years of history that joins a modest mid-western family of farmers and bricklayers along the Ohio River to the adventurous Dutch seafarers and merchants that first settled along the Hudson River in New Netherlands in the mid-1600s. I have met some wonderful people along the way. I learned of a man who I consider to be a genuine hero and inspiration, my great-great grandfather Hiram Hopper, who was widowed twice and married three times, a man who saw many of his children die yet rose to become a pillar in his community of Greenville, Indiana. I learned about his grandfather, Captain Jonathan Hopper of the Bergen County Militia who was murdered by Loyalist Tories during the Revolutionary War, while his wife and two infant children were forced to watch ( CLICK HERE  for story). I explored ground that had not been explored before, since the Hoppers that left New York and New Jersey had been forgotten by other Hopper family researchers.  I met, via the internet, some of these other researchers who were extremely helpful. Finally, in the Fall of 2002, I was able to attend a reunion of some of Hiram Hopper's descendants in Indiana, who I never knew existed before this research began.

This page is dedicated to my late and revered grandmother, Susie (Hopper) Ott, who loved to tell stories to her grandchildren about her ancestors, who tried to write down her memories in her later years when time and hardships had blurred some of the facts, and who did not have the advantages provided by computers and the internet. Because her parents were divorced soon after she was born, she never really learned of her Hopper family heritage.

(1) 1. ANDRIES WILLEMZEN HOPPE
Birth Date: ?
Birth Place: ?
Death Date: 1658
Death Place: New Netherlands, America
Spouse: GEERTJE HENDRICKS(E)
Birth Place: the Netherlands
Death Place: Bergen Co., NJ
Children: Tryntje, Willem, Hendrick, Matthys Adolphus

NOTE:  It is not known where Andries Willemzen HOPPE was born. Olin Zabriskie
speculates that he may have been Dutch, English, German, or even Scandinavian.
In the 1600s, Amsterdam was a major center of trade and commerce in Europe,
with a very international flavor. By the 1650s, Andries was a successful trader
along the Hudson River in New Netherlands (later New York). It is felt that he
arrived in the New World shortly before 1650, and probably married Geertje
Hendricks after he arrived there. Researchers are quite certain that Geertje
was born in Gelderland, Netherlands.  After Andries died in 1658, his widow
was remarried to Dirk Gerritsen Van Dien, and the family left New York to settle
in what would become Bergen County, New Jersey.  With her second husband,
Geertje became the matron of a second family in the New York/New Jersey area.

 *************************HIRAM HOPPER AND DESCENDANTS************************

(7) 1.3.2.5a.5.1.2. HIRAM  HOPPER
Birth Date: 11 September 1812
Birth Place: New York

NOTE:  Conflicting information exists regarding Hiram's date and place of birth.
His gravestone indicates that he was born in New york on 11 September 1812.
Some census data agrees with that year, while others show 1814. The 1812 date
appears to be correct. Similarly, some records indicate that Hiram was born in
Ohio, but these are certainly incorrect.

Death Date: 22 August 1890
Death Place: Greenville, Floyd Co., IN
Burial Place: Greenlawn Cemetery, Greenville, Floyd Co., IN
Occupations:  Bricklayer, farmer
, Floyd County Commissioner
1st Spouse: ELIZA ANN WHIT(E)LOCK
Birth Date: 14 February 1818
Birth Place: Kentucky
Death Date: 11 December 1854

Death Place: Floyd Co. IN
Burial Place: Greenlawn Cemetery, Greenville, Floyd Co., IN
Spouse's Father: (unverified)  WILLIAM N. WHITLOCK, Sr. (1795-1875)
Marriage Date: 17 July 1835

Marriage Place: New Albany, Floyd Co., IN
Children of Hiram and Eliza: Livingston (Levingston), Hiram Jr, George A.,
                                          William H.
, Evaline, Elizabeth, (Anna)

NOTES:  Although Hiram and Eliza Ann were married in Floyd County, Indiana in 1835,
they returned to Hamilton County, Ohio (Cincinnati) and began to raise their family.
At some point between 1850 and 1853 the Hoppers returned permanently to Floyd County
where they took up farming in Greenville Township.
Hiram also continued in the bricklayer
trade. With his friend and business partner Joseph SUMMERS, he built many of the early
homes in western Floyd County.
According to his obituary in the NEW ALBANY LEDGER
in August 1890, Hiram also served two terms as a Floyd County Commissioner.

More about William WHITLOCK: it is known that Eliza Ann WHITLOCK was born in
Kentucky in 1818, and written family history says that she was born in Kenton County.
However, Kenton Co. did not exist at that time. The 1820 Census for Kentucky shows
a William WHITLOCK living in Boone Co., KY, which, like Kenton Co., was formed
from Campbell Co., KY. It also indicates that there was a daughter under five years of
age in the household. William does not appear in any subsequent census rolls for those
Kentucky counties, but a William WHITLOCK does appear in 1830 and later census
rolls living in Greenville Township in Floyd Co.,IN. The 1830 census data includes a
female child of the same age range as Eliza Ann, but she is no longer shown in the
1840 census and later (she married Hiram HOPPER in 1835). Floyd Co. records also
show that this same William WHITLOCK married Julia Ann MONAGHAN in 1835, about
two weeks after Hiram and Eliza Ann were married. In 1850, William and Julia were
living in Greenville. This census also shows a William N. WHITLOCK, Jr., in the house-
hold, born about 1826 in Kentucky.According to the same census, William WHITLOCK, Sr.,
was born in Virginia about 1796, and Julia appears to behis second wife. The name of
William's first wife, and Eliza Ann's mother, is not known. Marriage records from Virginia
show that a William WHITLOCK married Nancy MONTGOMERY in Frederick County in
January 1814, and another William WHITLOCK married Anna FARIS in Pittsylvania Co.
in July 1817. Subsequent census data shows neither family as still being in Virginia,
suggesting that both moved west shortly after their marriages. No data was found to
determine which couple it was that settled first in Kentucky, then later in Indiana.

In the 1860 Census, when Hiram HOPPER first appears living in Greenville, the
WHITLOCK's are no longer living in that township but instead are located in Lafayette
Township in Floyd Co. This suggests that William sold or gave his Greenville homestead
to his daughter and son-in-law in the early 1850s (before Eliza Ann died in 1854), which
facilitated their move from Cincinnati to Greenville. Despite all of this evidence, no firm
proof such as a birth record has been found to link Eliza Ann to the Floyd County
WHITLOCK's. It appears that William and Julia Ann WHITLOCK both died in the 1870's
in Lafayette Township, near Floyd Knobs.  William Whitlock, Jr. apparently Eliza Ann's
younger brother (b. 1826 in Kentucky), named one of his daughters Eliza, further evi-
dence that Eliza Ann was a part of this Whitlock family.

Recent information obtained from Floyd County concerning the Monahan Cemetery in
Georgetown shows William Whitlock, born 5 November 1795, died 6 January 1875,
buried with his wife Julia Ann Monaghan, born 18 October 1813  and died 26 December
1874. Also buried there was their son Jacob, died in 1843 at the age of 7.Census data
also suggests that William and Julia Ann also had a daughter who died in childhood,
but no burial information could be found.

NOTES: After his divorce from Christina, all contact between
William Hopper and the his daughter Susie was lost  until
about 1898 when she  received a letter from him inquiring
about her general well being. The letter was postmarked
from  "New Trenton" in Franklin Co., IN. He had remarried.
A recently obtained photograph of William and his second
family, taken in the late 1890's, shows four children.
Notations on the back of the picture listed the names of
three: Claude, Noah, and Nellie. It indicated that Noah
and Nellie were twins.  The 1900 census for Franklin Co.,
Whiteriver Township, lists Mary D. HOPPER (widow) and
Claude, Noah , and Nellie living in the household of August
SHROYER. The children were shown as nephews and
nieces of Mr. SHROYER. Also listed was another niece,
Alberta PRICE, 14 years old.  The letter sent from William
to Susie discussed the piano playing abilities of "Berta",
which indicates that she may have been Mary's daughter
from a prior marriage.

Birth Place: Greenville, Floyd Co., IN

(8) 1.3.2.5a.5.1.2.9 Martha HOPPER
Birth Date: About 1859

Birth Place: Greenville, Floyd Co., IN

NOTE: When Sarah HOPPER died in 1860, all of the children except for the youngest, Martha,
were placed in the homes of friends and family, and never returned to the household of Hiram
HOPPER and his third wife, Catherine. While significant data has been found relating to
Sarah's children from her 1st marriage, little is known about Albert and Martha. Although
Martha
appears in the HOPPER household in the 1870 census, she no longer appears there
ten years later in 1880.
Apparently Martha was placed in the home of the PECTOL family, who
were Greenville neighbors  of the Hoppers. It appears that Albert was sent to live with the
NIELD family in New Albany, althought the 1870 census data cannot confirm that. It shows
him and having been born in kentucky, which would be an error if this is the same Albert HOPPER.
The census also lists him as a "bound boy", which implies some type of servitude.Indiana records
show that an Albert HOPPER married Mary ALKIRE in White Co., IN in 1875. The 1880 census
shows Albert and Mary HOPPER, both aged 22, living in Prairie, White Co., IN. The census lists
Albert's father's birthplace as Ohio, which lends credence to the belief that this was the son if Hiram
HOPPER, who grew up in Ohio before moving to Indiana. After 1880, no records have been found
for either Albert or Martha.
