Vanderheyden Family Chart

The Vanderheyden family, as well as the Quatresols and van Hoof families, had their origins in the Brabant Province of Flemish Belgium (Flanders), just east of Brussels. Being Flemish, they spoke the same language and shared customs with their Dutch neighbors to the north, and after arriving in America mingled and intermarried with them. On May 2, 1855, Jean Baptiste (John) Vanderheyden and his family departed Belgium’s Port of Antwerp on the Ship “Gaston”, destined for America. Traveling with them was Elizabeth’s widowed mother Suzanna (van Hoof) Quatresols. They arrived in New York seven weeks later on June 22, 1855, then traveled on to Wisconsin, settling in Brown County's Scott Township, near Green Bay. In the early 1880s, the families of two of John Vanderheyden's daughters moved on to Grant County, South Dakota, but the majority of the family remained in the Green Bay area. The latter included daughter Rosa (Rosaline), my great-grandmother, who by then had married Henry Nooyen and had given birth to my grandfather, Alexis Nooyen. (SOURCE: "The Flemish in Wisconsin")
