The earliest records of the UTZ family are found in the Province of Alsace, which is now a part of France but throughout history changed hands between French and German control.  In the middle of the seventeenth century, at the close of the Thirty Years War, many Swiss-Germans left Switzerland for Germany, where there was more land available for farming than there were people to farm it. The UTZ family may have been part of this migration, but no proof has been found for this. On September 28, 1733, Hans Georg UTZ (age 50) and his son Hans Jacob (27), along with Jacob's young wife Marie Catherine (24) and Marie's mother Barbara HALLER (77), arrived at the Port of Philadelphia on board the Brigantine RICHARD AND ELIZABETH out of Rotterdam. They made their way to Baltimore County, Maryland, where they originally settled.  About sixty years later, the widow of Henry UTZ, who was a grandson of Hans George, took her twelve children and migrated to Shenandoah County, Virginia. Some twenty years later, two of her children (Adam and Conrad UTZ) continued the family migration, eventually settling in Harrison County, then Floyd County, Indiana.

NOTE: Adam and Margaret were the only UTZ family members,
other than Adam's brother Conrad and sister-in-law Elizabeth
(BAKER) UTZ, to migrate from Virginia to southern Indiana.
Enroute, they stopped  temporarily in Tennessee where their daughter Mary Nancy (Polly) was born . The following year the Utz
family continued their trek northwestward and settled in
Harrison Co., IN. The Indiana census for 1820 shows them in
Harrison Co. under the name "Youtz". By 1830 they had moved
to Georgetown in adjacent Floyd County, IN. The 1860 census
shows them there and includes the fact that Adam was of
German origin and could not read or write.
